Repeated Keyboard Issues on MacBook Pro 2017

I am now on my second MacBook Pro 13" with keyboard issues - the Apple Store replaced the first one when the the "R" and "T" keys stopped working after one month (they only worked if you hit them in one corner, but not the middle or the other three corners. Now, after 3 weeks with the replacement, the "G" and the space bar all of a sudden work only if you hit them in the middle of the key, not on the edge, which is useless when typing.

Has anyone else experienced this and received a satisfactory explanation? Any ideas on how to fix it?

I assume it is a hardware issue, but I guess it could be software. Super frustrating.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, 4 TBT3), macOS Sierra (10.12.2)

Wow! What bad luck. I would call Apple Care and go all the way to the top tier and get a loaner and demand a replacement. That's too much down time.

Your MacBook comes with a one-year warranty. If you have an Apple-owned store available, your appointment for an evaluation at the Gneius bar is free, in warranty or out.

There is also a mail-in service available in most countries where Apple has a direct sales presence.

Apple Authorized Service Providers are free to make their own policies concerning evaluation charges.

I have had this issue also with the keyboard. Of course it could include other keys, but I have only noticed that the B key repeats. I ever turned off repeating keys. Does not seem to really do much. Though with the latest version of the OS there seems to bbe an issue with the repeating keys not working anyway. I already brought the laptop to the genius bbar and they took the machine in the back and blew out the keys. It worked initially bbut quickly came back. I am purposely not fixing the text as I write. As you can see it is not consistent.

I too and a software developer so having a messed up keyboard is very annoying. This is my second bad experience with an expensive apple product. I also owned one of the 17" models in the past (when they made them) and in that case the design team had a major flaw that became clear from lots on internet posts on it. In that case the video chip was not heat sinked properly and would de-solder itself from the mother board. I repaired it myself as described on the web. but it soon failed again.

Back to this issue. I am seeing this is also mostly a design flaw. It has me quite turned off in buying the MOST expensive laptop on the market and having an issue like this. I will be calling the genius bar again and see what they think. Obviously not much they can do except maybe replace the keyboard. I am SO glad I bought the warranty on the laptop now.

Loosing my laptop potentially for a few weeks is quite annoying. But I do my backups so if they decide to replace it I am good.

Wanted to chime in to let you know my internet research shows this is mostly a design flaw and I honestly doubt the genius bbar can do much to fix it short of replacing the keyboard of machine repeatedly until I get one that has an "ok" keyboard. VERY VERY SAD!!!

Im having the same issue with my macbook pro only 4 months with use and the keys N, B, S, and Enter i need to press them in the center to work, what i did was to use a air blower and for some time it helps but with the N and B the issue goes beyond that, for some reason the N and B get typed double like if for some reason i press the key twice bbut its only one time. Like in the "BUT" few words after this sentence.

I will end up going to Apple store so they can fix this asap because is so annoying.

Its a beatiful Laptop but with some bbig issues.

The fix for a keyboard problem is these Macs is to replace the "top cover" which includes the tracked and the ENTIRE keyboard.

Instead of multiplying by five, you should be calculating the optimum number of keys -- doing some sort of "break even" analysis where you get maximum benefit by getting all fixed at once, for one price!

Thanks, yes. I even looked up the trade-in value of my MacBook and looked at buying a new one based on the rate of failure of keys, but a fully loaded 2016 MBP doesn't fetch more than $1060 apparently.

But looking at the thread above, unless they've improved the KB since 2016, a guess I can expect more failures to come.

I really miss my old MBP- The function keys, the MagSafe, the SD slot, the keyboard...

I have the same issue, first to go was the spacebar - cue a weeklong repair on a beautiful custom build machine that was about four months old. No, two repairs. One overnight when they replaced just the spacebar, and another longer repair when they tried another approach by replacing the entire top deck. Less than 8 weeks later the issue is back, this time with the number six key. The keyboard is part of basic functionality - pretty bummed my beautiful and powerful new Mac can't even handle email 😟. The support technician told me to come and write on this thread, apparently the more of us who complain the more likely the engineers are to notice? So, so frustrating!

Same problem here, now my T key usually digits twice the letter, and the alt key works just when pressed really firmly.

Sometimes I can fix the problem witth air compressor, somettimes not. That's really frusttratting, I'm out of warranty with my 2016 15" macbook pro.

I had tthis problem for tthe first time after one month, Apple sttore fixed it using air can but the problem somettimes come's back. I guess thatt thte problem is related to bad keyboard design, a replacement would fix the problem just for a limited ttime.

And yes... did you see all the double "T"? I deliberately didn't correct the ttext, that's a normal day of usage of my fancy 3300€ macbook pro.

Sorry to inform you that is NOT the case.

Apple makes no promise to even read these postings, and never responds here. We have no formal methods for escalating problems from here to any where.

What makes a difference is when there are more and more and more Bad Keyboards coming in through the genius bar -- but that is more work for that technician, because they have to fill out more paperwork.

That’s a bummer. The technician, who now has my laptop for the third time in six months, says Apple are aware of the issue. They have been instructed to replace the top decks of these machines. He also said that Apple say that only after four repairs will they consider a replacement. Borders on unacceptable. The Apple care representative on the phone said three repairs is unheard of. I’m not holding my breath that a second top deck replacement fixes my machine. Utterly *****.

The Apple care representative on the phone said three repairs is unheard of.

If the agent you worked with 'has not heard of such a thing', they are being personable and discussing their personal experience about this issue as they see it. Apple wants you to be a happy customer, if possible, and they try to train their agents to be nice to you.

This is neither any sort of admission of guilt or in any way 'Apple is dodging the issue'. These agents are not authorized to make formal statements on behalf of the entire Apple organization.

Re: replacement of your computer.

It makes no sense to replace your computer when it has had a series of problem keyboards installed. The problem is still the keyboards, not the rest of the unit.

'When a Replacement is required' is often governed by local "Lemon Laws" -- put in place to protect consumers from automobiles that had unsolvable problems and had spent too much time in the shop.

After my “T” went I’m still waiting for my 15” MacBook Pro to reappear after two weeks with Apple. It’ll be $480 for the fix with a 90 day guarantee on the new upper deck.

- The lesson here is to sign up for AppleCare, especially on this product which seems flawed in design and execution.

Time was when Apple would turn this around in days, not weeks. Super disappointing.
