Repeated Keyboard Issues on MacBook Pro 2017

I am now on my second MacBook Pro 13" with keyboard issues - the Apple Store replaced the first one when the the "R" and "T" keys stopped working after one month (they only worked if you hit them in one corner, but not the middle or the other three corners. Now, after 3 weeks with the replacement, the "G" and the space bar all of a sudden work only if you hit them in the middle of the key, not on the edge, which is useless when typing.

Has anyone else experienced this and received a satisfactory explanation? Any ideas on how to fix it?

I assume it is a hardware issue, but I guess it could be software. Super frustrating.

Wow! What bad luck. I would call Apple Care and go all the way to the top tier and get a loaner and demand a replacement. That's too much down time.

I have a 6 month old MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) and now my b key is intermittent. I am booked solid for the next three weeks and don't have time to deal with this issue right now. Following this thread is a little confusing. Some folks say apple replaced their Keybboard or (top cover), while others say they fixed the issue by blowing compressed air on the key. And unfortunately, it sounds like the fix might be temporary.

After my “T” went completely it went into the AppleStore where they "replaced the keycap" which gave me "t" maybe half the time- With firm strikes of the key which made typing almost unbearable. It's now had its top deck replaced ($480) including keyboard and new batteries. Evidently post June 2017 the keyboard has been revised with better travel and hopefully reliability.

I have this problem too!!!!
I spent too much money, and I have a computer with poor keyboard!!... touch bar, super thin, super display... but the "simple" keyboard does not run. It's a nightmare!!!!
Sometimes is one kay, other times another one. Sometimes a key is totally unresponsive, and other times a key is "erratic" (for example, prints three times, when I pressed it just once).

But the real problem is that Apple does not give a SOLUTION.
MacBook Pro 2017 with apple care = waste 😟

I assume high prices with Apple products, because of this I want expect quality and service iff necessary. But I have no quality and no service.

It's the first time I'm thinking leave Apple and go back to other solutions.

I'm very sad and frustrated.

My 15" 2017 MBP started having space key problems a few months after I bought it then packed in completely. I took it to an Apple centre; they tried replacing the key but for some reason couldn't so they replaced the entire laptop - result!

Now, one ctrl key and one shift key are both on the way out. I haven't checked but I think I'm out of warranty. so it looks like, reading other posts here, there are keyboard issues on this model and it looks like i'm going to have to pay for replacing keys or keyboards for the life of this machine. Not happy.

+1 on that! I am a long time apple user (advocate) with more apple products than I can count on my 20 digits. The latest MBP has been a real disappointment. Wish I could go back to my 2015 MBP. My wife's Macbook has a dead "C", I and have dead "W" and "ENTER" keys.

If I were a causal user I could probably use a loaner, but I'm an app developer and it takes many days to get everything installed and configured to work effectively. So I am just trudging through for now.

I need a $3800 laptop that:

(a) doesn't crash when I close the lid (due to the TouchBar - which I otherwise find handy),

(b) doesn't have dead keys (due to new fragile keyboard design), and

(c) adds an hdmi port to the side so I don't have flaky display issues with third party (even expensive third party) converters and docking stations.

What is up, Apple? Stop it with the overly-minimalistic design choices on the iphone X (no headphone jack is awful, and third-party splitters are awful) and only USB-C ports on the MBP (which the industry isn't ready to support -- the USB-C displays on the market are 3-star rated at best, and adapters are flaky as well)

Wow - I didn't intend to type so much, but once I got started I just kept coming out! I know Apple has heard all of this before - hope it turns around soon.

I would like to negotiate with a completely new one as the repairs take more than 2 weeks.

They are completely unlikely to supply a new computer in response to a broken key, unless you are inside the initial '14-days from receipt' acceptance period.

These parts can be changed in well under an hour. MAJOR changes may take far longer.

If parts are not available, you should be able to place them on order, and then return at a time certain for at worst "overnight" service on the keyboard.

Often, keyboard repair/replacement can be done "on the spot". ASK THEM.

I have the same issues with the Top right of the space bar becoming unresponsive. I used compressed air twice and now it was back a third time. I called apple twice and they told me to come into the store for an appointment. Im so annoyed. The last time now when the space bar was stuck i pressed it harder, it make a sound like something underneath cracked or popped and it was running fine after. maybe some dust that went away?

I mean cmon I never had keyboard issues with my 2013 or 2015 model, and no one should have to pay for apple care to have this covered. my macbook is 6 months old and im lucky i live in the eu where we have 2 years and on top i got a third party insurance coering all expenses. way cheaper and better than apple care.

im so annoy with apples quality. the first two macbooks i got also had a scratch...

Left Shift key and left Command key working erratically... Typing and using Command keys like save, copy and paste it's a nightmare... Seems like a small problem, but it's a giant Achilles heel. My MacBook Pro Touch bar (15-inch, Late 2016, Spanish ISO keyboard) is 16 months old... this never happened to me in 24 years of buying macs. For the price of this machine, is completely unacceptable...

Apr 22, 2018 1:52 PM in response to rjoesq

My keyboard (actually, fully frontal, including battery and touch bar) was replaced last week.

I recommend ask for fully replacement to everyone having this problem, may be then Apple think about this problem seriously.

And if the keyboard fails again, I will ask for another replacement... again and again until my Apple Care expires in late 2020.

It's a very big problem. Unacceptable.
