login issue

Could use some help from the community with a login issue.

iMac 27 Late 2015

Core i7 8 GB

OS X 10.11.6

The iMac does not necessarily display all five user accounts on the login screen.

Earlier today 2017 02 24 the iMac would not respond to the correct password in the unlock screen box.

Tried various work arounds.

Was able to log out and log in on secondary admin account.

Checked primary admin account in System Preferences - Accounts and Users.

All in order.

Logged out.

Primary admin account not displayed on login screen.

Logged in to secondary admin account. System Preferences - Accounts and Users.

Selected display user name and password box.

Shutdown / restart.

System did not display user name and password box.

Did not display primary admin account.

Logged in to secondary admin account. Logged out.

System did display user name and password box.

Logged in to primary admin account.

Experienced multiple requests for keychain password. This is a change.

System Preferences - Accounts and Users. Changed user password.

Keychain Manager. Synced user password with Keychain password.

Ran a backup. No issues.

Shutdown / startup.

Back to same problem, icons not boxes, and two accounts not displayed.

Reset NVRAM and SMC. No change.

iMac is usable by way of secondary admin account but awkward.

Not sure how best to proceed.

you may have to reset the Keychain, in the various accounts.

As a test, what happens if you go to System Preferences/Users & Groups/Login Options and changed the setting to name and password? Can the primary account log in?

2 backups, 2 separate drives.

You and I think alike. Done. No issues.

Move .plist, no change after restart. Same situation.

Did you try the main admin password or the password of another admin account?

I have a question: how are your disk(s) formatted: with MBR or GUID Partition Table?

second question: how many partitions on a disk?

Can you answer that, you see it in DiskUtility.

OEM with Fusion drive.

Do you have Trim installed ? : that could cause issues.

Especially with Fusion Drive that causes much more writes on the SSD.

Read about Trim and its effects on another thread.

I will need to ask for community help in determining whether or not Trim is enabled on this iMac.

Update.

Phone call from Apple Support.

They asked to see the iMac at the Genius Bar.

Apple Support set a local appointment.

Apple technician will check for failure of internal hard drive.
