iPhone 7 Voicemail Transcription Feature not working with AT&T

I have an iPhone 7 through AT&T but the voicemail transcription feature does not work. I have troubleshooted the issue with both AT&T and Apple (several times!). Both point the finger at the other. Has anyone also had this experience? Any resolution? I'd love to have this feature on my phone!

Follow the steps if you haven't already:

See a transcription

Here's what you need to get a transcription:

View a transcribed voicemail message:

  1. Go to the Phone app, then tap the Voicemail tab.
  2. Tap a new voicemail message. You can see the transcription, and the audio will play.

Voicemail transcriptions are done on your device and aren't sent to Apple. If you see "was this transcription useful or not useful" next to a transcription, you can tap to let Apple know, and you can choose if you want to submit that voicemail's audio to Apple.

Okay what exactly do you see? Are they working for some? If you can please provide a screenshot but please blur out any personal data.


If you don't see transcriptions for some of your voicemails

When you plug in your iPhone, old voicemails are transcribed in the background. This might take up to 24 hours.

If voicemail transcriptions don't appear, connect to Wi-Fi and check a new voicemail. To check, you can leave yourself a voicemail. It might take up to 24 hours for the transcription to appear. If it still doesn't appear, you can also try using dictation in another app, then check for the transcription again.

I am not sure if there are any other apps to try.


Have you tried restarting your iPhone? Is your iPhone up-to-date?


This may be your problem, taken from Apple's website:

If your iPhone can't provide a confident description of the message, the transcription won't appear.


* Note * Transcription is still in its beta stages so Apple is still working to improve it.

Hi There! I had the same problem and found out, through trial and error, that it was because I hadn't set Siri up. I switched from an iPhone 6s Plus to a 7 Plus. I was using it on the 6s Plus, but it didn't work on the 7. Somehow it dawned on me that I'd been too busy to set Siri up (not that it took more than a second!). Fixed the problem INSTANTLY. I would suggest disabling, power cycle, then enabling Siri to see if that helps if you've already got Siri running on your phone. Good Luck!
