My Ipod Nano has frozen, cannot be recognised by PC or Windows+wont charge!

I got my Ipod Nano christmas day and it worked perfectly- no problems at all. I came home boxing day, and charged it on PC ( all the itunes were installed) and it worked fine. The day after (today 27th) I used it around 9 O'clock in the morning, it worked perfectly and charged fine. I left it on my bed and went out about 11 O'Clock. I came back around 3 O'Clock and it wouldn't work. It won't switch on, charge up, and my PC and Windows doesn't even acknowledge it when i plug in the USB port. I have tried all my USB ports, pressing the buttons simoutaenously like it mentions in the support, but nothing!
I have no idea what to do! Can anyone help at all please! Thankyou x

I am having the same problem >.<

I recieved a silver 2g iPod nano for Christmas from my kind mother who was really pressed for cash this year seeing how my older sister is going to college. It had run better than I expected for the first 5 days or so, then I noticed that it was down to 1/3 battery. So I plug it into the computer and wait for it to charge like it usually does. I come back about an hour later and see that the screen is blank. I tried the buttons to no avail so I decided to check the website. The 5 r's have not worked and the restore will not work as my computer does not even register my iPod nor does my iTunes (latest version).
I have read all this
" Toggle HOLD switch. Press Select and menu buttons at the same time for 10 seconds."
I have tried this an excess amount of times to the same amount of failure. I am not one prone to conspiracies but could there be something wrong with the iPod or is it something to do with windows xp and iTunes 7? I am going to ask my mother about returning it but I fear her reaction to how soon something has gone wrong.

Hello, I had the same problem. My Nano wouldn't turn
on or do anything. I was going to return it(!)
before I stumbled upon a solution on this site. What
has happened is your ipod has frozen (dah), here is
the solution. Press and hold the menu and the middle
circuler butten until an apple shows up on your
screen. After that, it sould be back to normal.
Hope that this helps.

you must slide hold on and off before doing the instructions at all.

It appears that this happens more often than i thought.

I have had this occur to me several times before.

On every occasion i have been just listening to mp3 formatted songs on my way to work, mainly after a long period of inactivity around 48 hours (the weekend).
During the week i use my 20Gb colour ipod every day and it has been through a lot.

In the past i have been able to reset my ipod after displaying the "sad ipod symbol" after it stalls listening to songs i always play, so i know it's not the disk thats to blame.

I then connect it to a power source, reset it, and put the i pod into 'disk mode' when i get home. in the past this has resolved the issue (and stopped me from sending it back to be repaired).

But now, after the 3rd time of this happening it now has given up on me. Complete failure to respond to 'toggling' the hold switch, resetting, resetting whilst conected to power for the recomended 20 minutes, changing to disk mode and being recognised on my PC and my new PowerBook G4.

All of this has led me to believe that the battery is no longer storing power and thus causing operational problems with the other components. I suppose i will have to send it back to apple, i have only had it for just over the year warranty and so may need to pay to get it repaired (or very possibly a new one).

Convenient timing would you not agree? and its the same situation for many of my friends that bought an ipod at the same time i did.

But thats not what im angry about, it's the fact that this has happened before and they have said its not the battery, when it quite clearly is. not to mention all the data i will now loose, because apple will simply not just replace the battery....no, they want to take the whole thing apart to prove that it was 'something else', so they can keep all of my songs. ahhh!

If this is the support you get for an ipod, what problems should we expect from the iphone i ask you...

OKOK

I think i have an answer that should help others in my situation. here goes...

as with any modern HDD, the ipod is designed to operate in certain conditions which we would normally expect it to. These include conditions such as vibration. Many of you may well be walking down the street and find your ipod lock up due to unknown reasons, then find difficulty in playing music and resetting the unit. your ipod then displays the 'sad ipod' logo.

My experience tells me that this may well be down to the tiny heads inside the Hard Disk Drive of the ipod, 'locking up'.

(inside the ipod the heads of the HDD read all of the music data including the program data that the unit needs to function itself).

This is mainly due to a smart bit of technology that prevents your HDD from becoming damaged when you drop it accidentally. If the player suspects it is rapidly accelerating randomly, be it up, down, left or right, these heads will lock away from the disks in the hard drive to prevent the disks with all your music from becoming damaged and corrupted. Usefull stuff...when it works properly.

If your ipod experiences a 'lock up' and you havent been 'jumping around' then dont worry there is an easier solution to sending it back to apple.

This problem may commonly occur if you use it when out in extreme cold temperatures or have ever dropped your ipod before as well. My 20Gb photo ipod still locks up when i am on the bus, due to all the vibrations.

There is a Solution if all others have been tried.....(see resetting, and disk mode tutorials on apple/support page)

First, make sure the unit is charged by connecting it to the mains supply, NOT a computer! especially if you run vista, it will think it is corrupt and try to clean it!!!!

(i know this may be difficult if there is no responce from the screen, but the battery will charge anyway, afterall, it is always best to check)

try tapping the unit VERY gently on a desk, or drop it onto a carpet from about a foot off the ground, this should hopefully dislodge the heads and return the player to it's normal state after you reset it again.

(I must warn you, do this at your OWN RISK! as i wont take any responsibility if you drop it of a building and break the thing). Most of the time it works perfectly for most ipods so you can stop worrying and get on with the day.

I really hope this helps someone as writing this took a lot of reading.

thanks!

My, you are just full of misinformation:

The "colour ipod" (I'm assuming you are referring to the 5th Generation iPod with video) does NOT run on beta software and doesn't come with an AC adaptor, which would have nothing to do with resets and updates, and it certainly doesn't use cheap components.

Any other fiction you have to put here? Using a little too much of the home product?

GTA Master's solution for the frozen iPod absolutely worked for our lightly-used 2006 Xmas 4GB pink ipod that suddenly froze this afternoon. If frozen, don't plug ipod into anything - disconnect headphones, make sure hold button is off, press menu and center button until screen changes to Apple. Took about 6-8 seconds, and then we replugged in headphones - all is well in our house tonight. Thank you!!!
