Apple Pencil not connecting or not charging

I haven't used my Apple Pencil for a month or so. When I connected it it showed a percentage of 3% and as I charged it the battery just decreased to 0

Stilll showing it's charging after 30 min I moved it to the cable to charge and disconnected the device

now that I come back After 1 hour the pen could not connect to ipad as I tried to insert it into the iPad

The Bluetooth cannot pick it up

So, I went to the Apple Store recently to see about getting my Pencil (see above) replaced or repaired, and while waiting, just for kicks, I plug it into one of the iPads they have on display. And the iPad asks to pair with my (previously dead) Apple Pencil. So then I pull out my iPad Pro and try the pencil again and...yep - it asks to pair there too. And then works just fine.

Nice that it's fixed; kinda ***** that you have to kick-start the pencil by plugging it into a different iPad Pro (if indeed, that is what fixed it).

For Elxsha, any repair/replacement should be free since it's under a year old. (See Fiscalist's caveat above about finding your receipt or order history from Apple.)

Fiscalist, you should be able to request the $29 battery replacement, and if they give you trouble show them the link I posted above from Apple's own support site. If you do, please post to let us know whether or not that works.

I didn't use my pencil for a while. I have two, one is working the other is not so it's clearly not a problem with the ipad pro; it's the pencil. It is connecting for a second then disconnecting. I have been through all the procedures with Apple: online chat and trouble-shooting then apple phone call. Basically, it's quite simple. After 1 year Apple washes their hands of their product and puts you onto your statutory rights. If you haven't got proof of purchase you will struggle to obtain a refund from the retailer who sold you the product. If you bought it from Apple they should have a record of the purchase. My experience of arguing with them in relation to an out of warranty product is that they deny that it is defective and say that you must have dropped it. They then seek to charge you an extortionate amount for the repair. I really think this is a company with disgusting service values. It is quite clear that they are all trained to deny you all assistance if you are out of warranty period. Yet the cost of their products creates an expectation that they will last longer than a year. I will chuck my defective apple pencil in the bin and recommend to others the following:

- I have used a pen on a "surface" tablet and it's just as good and compatible with my work which uses windows and word;

- there are other providers of pencils compatible with apple products. They may be more reliable and have better customer service;

- keep your receipts if you buy Apple!

I dont know if my pencil is still under warranty. I bought it almost 2 years ago, barely used it because iPad had hardly any native apps that it worked with. So i probably used it a few times. Now that I can use it more, it doesn’t work. I had same thing...3% battery...so I did all the stuff Apple suggested and now it won’t pair. It goes under my connected bluetooth devices for a split second, then goes back to being an available device, and alas it times out. I will be talking to Apple today at the “Genius” bar. They’d better do the right thing and replace it. I will report back to this forum when I get the results.

I just bought a brand new iPad Pro and an Apple pencil, and immediately upgraded to iOS 11. I have tried repeatedly to pair the pencil with the iPad, and keep getting the same 3% Charge message. I have left the pencil charging from an USB source fo several hours. While it was charging, it remained ‘connected’ to bluetooth, as shown in the settings screen. However, as soon as I disconnected the pencil from the power source, the bluetooth device Apple pencil changed to ‘not connected’, and the 3% message appeared again. What the **** is going on here?

Thank you,

your reply was really, really helpful. I recently had the same problem and I was wondering: "That cannot happen that I would need some troubleshooting with an Apple product." and it worked as a charm, restart, unpair and pair again, thank you a lot.

Now I can be using my iPad PRO fully again with the amazing Apple Pen 🙂
