Fix for No Sound in iTunes on Windows 10

Guys this is just more something I wanted to share. I was searching forums back late last year when I noticed an issue where iTunes would just not play sound anymore. It was working fine after my Windows 10 upgrade and then just out of nowhere I could not get sound to play in iTunes. Checked and made sure all volume sliders were up and ran through my playback devices in sound to make sure it was not playing on the wrong device. Sound was working fine on everything else except iTunes. I uninstalled and re-installed iTunes 1 or 2 times as new versions came out in case it was some kind of Windows 10 issue with iTunes but it never fixed it. Finally today while I was going through a forum I noticed someone post about disabling the Sound Enhancer but it was already disabled. But I noticed another setting on the same page. The Play Audio Using: Section was set to Windows Audio Session. I changed it to Direct Sound and tada I can hear sound in iTunes again. This may work on older operating system versions to. Windows 10 was just what I was using.

Heres the process

1. Open iTunes and go into Edit and then preferences

2. Click Playback on the preferences screen.

3. At the bottom you will use Play Audio Using:

4. Change from Windows Audio Session to Direct Sound.

5. It will ask you to close iTunes and re-open and then you should have sound again.

You might be experiencing a different issue but if this can help one other person its worth it to post especially being a simple thing to check. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this fix. After switching to apple music, I've been streaming from my pc more often since then and out of nowhere sound stopped working. This fixed the issue for me, thank you very much

thanks, had the same no sound issue. switching to direct sound in preferences solved the problem.

I am having this issue as well, however it is not resolved by the method above. I can play music and hear sound via iTunes (Windows 10) however I cannot hear sound from movies. My output device is Arctis 7 and I have triple checked that all drivers are updated and that Windows is updated. I even tried removing and reinstalling iTunes as well as removing the headphones via device manager. Have also switched between sound outputs (making sure to use correct device as default), have double checked the sound level. I'm out of ideas and believe this is an issue on Apple's end. Dear Apple, stop neglecting Windows devices. Where is the updated TV app that is available on Macs?

Here I am, October, 2020, and had the exact same issue, Googled the problem, found this, and IT WORKED!

Getting computers to work together is like getting the UN to agree on something, but this worked!

In iTunes use Edit > Preferences > Playback and look at the entry for Play Audio Using. This will normally be set to either Direct Sound or Windows Audio Session. Changing the setting may help. If not change back to the original value and try once more. Failing that see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates and in particular the second box for a full tear down and rebuild.

Thank you this totally worked. I had no sound with iTunes and websites after i updated Windows 10. I ran all the tests Microsoft told me to run with its assistant and none of them worked. This worked. Thank you so much!!!

Thank you! Just downloaded the latest itunes for a new work laptop with windows 10 and I was getting baffled because I could hear everything else except my icloud music library in itunes! thank you! It worked!

Thank you so much. I did what you said and now I have sound on my PC Windows 10.

I had sound from any other program, but not iTunes.

Just do all those steps and close then restart iTunes.

I could just kiss you! I have been working on this forever. My hard drive died and I am reinstalling everything. I have over 5k mp3's and have had trouble with the sound to itunes. Thanks so very much! I have my music back.

So psyched I just found this post. When I remove my USB headphones I often have this problem and have to restart Windows 10 get sound from iTunes working again. I just tried this solution and it worked perfectly! Thanks!

i have tried this and it does not wirk for me as my issue is no volume on individual song..

i downloaded a song that apparently had no volume to start with from itunes...

rechecked itunes and confirmed that some songs hsdhas no volume at all on a particulsr album...all others play fine...

why is this? issue hss to be st itunes end!!!

OMG thank you SO much! As so many others have stated here, this was driving me nuts to the point of giving up on iTunes completely for months. I finally decided to try it again with a new install and still no sound.

Then I found this wonderful, helpful, solution, and it's playing perfectly now 🙂

I want to thank you! I was experiencing the same issue and I was so ****** off, I was ready to cancel my Apple Music subscription and switch back to Spotify. I then decided to perform a Google search and came across your post and I used your instructions and it worked like a charm! Thanks again!

Thanks for this! I've had this issue on and off ever since I got a new Windows 10 PC. Searched so many times and just got standard advice to check speaker volume etc. Tried this - worked 1st time! Much appreciated.

Thx so much for your post. I just built a new pc and sound worked fine, except for iTunes. Your post allowed me to fix it in 30 seconds. Thanks so much for taking the time to post it. It DEFINITELY was NOT intuitive to do that.
