Hi,

Here is a clue...
I am on 27" iMac, late 2015, w/retina, El Capitan, Safari 10.1
Try this and maybe you can make some sense of it...
Were I an Apple engineer I would think I had a good lead here, can anyone shed some light?
Where are you trying to drag them from and what is the error message? If you are trying to drag them from the Dock's Download folder, try going to your User/Home folder/Downloads and see if you can drag them to the Desktop from there. If you can, the Dock alias is corrupt.
Tried deleting the cache, it did not help. In guest user it does the same. With Firefox it works as usual. It is only in Safari 10.1 / El Capitan immediately after the update it broke drag and drop with the cursor. Yet I found it is only on the external monitor ( Mini Display Port) on the internal MBP it works as expected.
The pages and all the content and functionality are loading fine. So this doesn't look like a cache issue but a functionally issue with Safari itself.
All my other browsers like chrome, firefox work just fine doing the same thing.
As for Safari itself there are no plugins/extensions active so again it can't be this.
No tried that as well as caches. No change. This was brought on by the update. I will wait and see if Apple fixes the problem before having to reinstall the os from scratch. Oh as said, I had tried guest user same same. I can right click and save to downloads though on the external monitor. The problem is only on the external monitor, only after the update, and ONLY in Safari.
Did you have installed any anti - virus , third party app in your system , if it is yes , uninstall it as the will create more issues , if drag and drop is not working close all applications and right click on the desktop and sort by None .
Install : http://www.etrecheck.com/
And it will show what unwanted files are running in your computer .
Same issue here. Tried all the usual time wasting suggestions and no effect. It happened immediately after the Safari update - drag and drop mail message into folder on MS Exchange leads to problem, but so does highlighting a single word on any web page and dragging that.
Same issue here after update safari... It would be great if I can downgrade, but I guess it's complicate. Even if I have a copy in time machine as me. Or can I just take the previous safari app and drop in apps folder?
PS/ It would be great if apple can ship a solution shortly.
I've just just figured out an workaround.
- Open Time Machine backup.
- Open the application folder and find Safari
- Go back to the date before the last Safari update (march 27 in this case)
- Instand of restore from the backup (won't work) choose copy item form the submenu.
- Close Time Machine go back to the application Folder
- Create an new Folder there an choose paste form the Subfolder.
- This will copy the older version of safari in there.
- Start this older version and everything works like it used to do.
This works yes but does not solve the drag and drop problem. In the notes on the security update the fixed a drag and drop security issue, which is what I expect to be the problem. Whether or not Apple will have enough automated reports to alert a problem needing a revision is hard to say.
Same here - and one same El Capitan - 10.11.6
It not only won't allow drag and drop, I can't reorder my queue in Netflix. In other words - it seems nothing can be dragged within, or out of Safari.
You can still right click and save the image that way, but that doesn't help for within a page, like trying to reorder the queue.
Best they fix this one ASAP . . .
It seems - you can no longer drag anything. Either within a page, within Safari, or out to the desktop. Somehow they broke the connect to drag anything at all.
I posted just above this - but then reading back through the thread noticed one person said they didn't have the problem, having the same versions of El Capitain and Safari, and on a MacBook Pro. Maybe it depends on how old the MacBook Pro is - that's what I'm on here (early 2009) and I most definitely have the same problem.
Same problem, on a Mac Pro Mid 2010.
No problem on a MacBook Pro Mid 2012.
Both are running El Capitan 10.11.6 with the same software installed.
Also tried the solutions you tried, nothing changed.
I even reinstalled the "Security Update 2017-001", in case that something went wrong.
(I could not find the Safari Update 10.1 to reinstall it though...)
Also all my other browsers and software are functioning as expected when trying to drag & drop.
I also sent feedback in hope of a quick fix...
I have the same problem on my system. Safari crashes instantly the second the mouse begins to move in attempt to drag an image. Happens so fast that occasionally happens by accident when trying to click normally if there is any movement. I have a Retina MacBook Pro 2015 and a Mac Pro late 2013, both running El Capitan and Safari 10.1. (no available updates other than Sierra) and crash is identical on both.
Yes, and this works without issue. It appears it's nothing to do with saving, but the actual image drag that causes the crash. It happens instantly as the mouse is moved by the tiniest amount on click-holding an image.
Eric, the problem is with dragging anything in a browser window. Save to desktop and anything from a right click menu still working just fine. I imagine that these are managed by different code as they are very different functions.
