Can't Remove a Few Cookies Safari 10.1

After Safari update to 10.1 with Yosemite, several cookies can no longer be removed. Did the usual Prefs>Privacy>Manage Website Data>Remove All. When done, 3-4 cookies come back.

Tried Develop>Empty Cache, Always block cookies, turned WiFi off, cleared history, cleared iPhone & iPad history but these cookies still come back.

FWIW, two of the cookies are Yahoo & eBay. After deleting the cookies, I'm no longer logged into yahoo or eBay. So something got erased but the list in Manage Website Data still shows them being there.

Bug, something new, suggestions for really removing cookies?

Thanks

Safari/Browsers – can’t delete cookies

Evercookie

Quit Safari.

In Finder go to Go menu and then Go to Folder.

Copy and paste this ~/Library/Safari/Databases.

Delete the contents of the folder.

Launch Safari again and check if all is ok.

If that doesn’t work, copy and paste this ~/Library/Safari/Local Storage.

Delete the contents of the folder.

Test.

Read this article : Safari 8 (Yosemite): Manage cookies and website data

Websites often store cookies and other data on your Mac. This data may include information that you have provided, such as your name, email address, and preferences. This data helps websites identify you when you return so the site can provide services for you and show information that might be of interest to you.

By default, Safari accepts cookies and website data only from websites you visit. This helps prevent certain advertisers from storing data on your Mac.

If you are using normal browsing window and browse , cookies will always be saved .

To clear cookies take cursor on top menu bar > click on safari > clear history

A window will appear , click on drop down arrows and choose as All history > click on clear history .

Backup the Mac.

Close all windows and quit all applications.

Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Library will appear between “Home” and “Computer” entries in the dropdown.

Select "Library" from the dropdown.

Click the “List” view button in the Finder toolbar.

Scroll down the list and click open the Safari folder.

Scroll down the list and click open the “Databases” folder.

If you find “REI” cookie, right click on it and choose “Move to Trash”.

Scroll down the list and click open the “Local Storage” folder.

Yes, deleted REI & it still repopulated.

Also looked further at the Manage Website Data. It looks like this

Note what appears to be location info "Databases & Local Storage". This is after I had followed dominic23's instructions for removing site specific items like REI from these 2 locations. Here's what's left in those folder when I'm done AND after removing all cookies again and they've repopulated.

All this seems to imply that these Ever Cookies are repopulating from the remaining files (which I haven't deleted). What do you think? Or are these repopulating from somewhere else?

It doesn't seem to matter if I remove items from Favorites. Also I turned iCloud off figuring it might be a tethering issue. Below are the sites I'm unable to remove after following the recommendations here. Again, this has NEVER happened before in all my years as a Mac user...and is only an issue since the last update.

My system:

MacBook Pro (Mid-2012)

El Capitan 10.11.6

(...sorry, not to confuse the issue but I thought I was still using Yosemite, although I've since learned that Sierra users are having the same issue.)

From the replies, its clear I needed to have said a couple more things.

First, this is new behavior w/ 10.1.

I've regularly deleted cookies in Safari for years. So

  • either the cookies for now 4 sites have changed to Evercookies or auto reload (REI, Yahoo, eBay & Weather.com. 3 of these sites are in my Favorites but REI is not.),
  • Safari isn't removing all cookies like it previously did
  • or Safari is now revealing this type of cookie when it didn't before.

Had already tried among many other things:

  • Clear history
  • Block all cookies
  • Remove All
  • Have done all these steps while in Private Browsing mode

Any suggestions about how to get rid of evercookies or block reloading?

Now that our browsing data can be sold, I'd like to leave as little as possible.

Safari 10

Cookies and Caches help Safari run faster by storing relevant information locally.

But you can remove all those website data without any problem, it may even help.

Next time you visit the site, related cookies will be restored.

Websites one visits may have links embedded in to other web sites.

Those sites will store cookies in the cookies folder.

Cookies may not have the same name as the original website.

The homepage I have set, adds about 70 cookies.

A website may use service from other service providers.

When a user signs into ASC, a cookie from Badgeville will appear.

Cookies from websites added to AutoFill will appear automatically.

Websites that are related to widgets like Weather channel will reappear.

Cookies from built in search engines like Bing, Yahoo and other favorites like Facebook will reappear.

One of these may add additional cookies.

Cookies can be stored by Plug-ins and extensions installed on our Mac. There are Flash cookies.

Cookies from some of the bookmarked/favorites sites will reappear.

macOS stores cookies in different folders like Cookies folder, Databases folder, Local Storage folder, etc

It is not easy to track down these cookies.

There are”Evercookies” that are hard to delete.

This issue is not particular to Safari.

Compared to other browsers, Safari is more willing to show the presence of website data more willingly.

The “killer application” known as Internet/WWW presents it’s own peculiarities,

some of which we don’t like, but we cannot do much about it.

I wouldn’t worry much about this. Just empty caches from Develop menu and remove cookies and local storage

by opening Privacy pane of Safari Preferences, then clicking “Remove All” button.

Thanks Eric, this almost does the job. After doing these steps, some but not all ever cookies are gone. I took the additional step of going to the Library>Safari>LocalStorage folder & deleted those contents as well. After that the one remaining cookie, REI, went away.

It will be interesting to see if these come back & how deleting the contents of these 2 folders affects the operation of Safari.

Hope to hear from others about removal of their cookies too.

I agree with Tradesmith45. The exact same thing is happening to me. First it was Labcorb, a site I do visit on occasion. I've been trying for over a week to delete that cooke. Today, another cookie (Citibank) which I never visited appears and will not delete. I've tried every suggestion in this thread (and more) and still they remain. I wonder whether this is the vanguard of the new policy signed by POTUS last week allowing Online companies to collect data on us? In other words, we may see more and more of this,
