I am having the same issue with this error message coming up. I have it on a range of different chargers and even my 3.5mm to lightening bolt connector.

My phone was replaced by apple 3 weeks ago due to an issue with the battery life on my previous device. So, i decided to take my device back into store to have it looked at.

The genius i spoke to said that there was a lot of dirt in the connector which i was a little less than convinced about due to the phone being so old but i went with it and accepted it as an answer. (Note- my new phone has a smashed screen). The genius did however say that even though this was probably the issue, his manager advised that they would replace the phone for the cost of a new screen. I was confused that he even mentioned this to me as he told me the dirt he removed was probably the issue?

I told him i was not prepared to pay for the screen replacement and went on my way.

I got home and yet again, when plugged into various chargers, my phone continued to have this error message and so i could not charge my phone overnight as it would randomly stop during the night.

I decided to go back to the store to discuss what had happened. I told the genius in the store of my issues and he stressed that the phone is ‘out of warranty’ due to the smashed screen. I told him that i did not want a screen replacement but i wanted a phone that charged properly. He told me he could not fulfill my request so i asked to speak to somebody that could do this. He told me he was a senior technician and they do not have the power to do this.

As i continued to try and reason with him, even though he agreed with what i was saying in that, replacing the screen does not affect the charger, and so to ask me to pay for a replacement screen was an unreasonable request, he could not change the warranty policy details. He then told me that he was very busy and due to the long queue was not prepared to continue conversation with me and told me to call AppleCare to escalate my issue. He once again agreed that i had a fair point in not paying for the screen replacement however he could not help.

I left the store and called AppleCare where a very efficient call centre worker quickly forwarded me to his manager as he knew he could not help me with my issue. After waiting for a few minutes, i was put on to a lady working for AppleCare and despite explaining my story she also told me she could not help and that my request was unreasonable as the phone was ‘out of warranty’. After about 10 minutes on the phone to the lady, she asked me if i was nearby to the store i had been in (which i was) and if i was able to put her on to the Genius bar representative that i had spoken to earlier. After waiting for around a further 10 minutes he eventually spoke to her and they finally arrived at the agreement to get me to speak with the branch manager of the store i was in.

My issue was explained by the genius representative and the store manager continued to tell me about how ‘we don’t get into the ifs and buts with the customer’ as it causes confusions. I asked him a simple question, ‘Of i buy a car and it is in warranty and there is an issue with the engine but it has a cracked windscreen, does the car dealer tell me that they will not complete the repair work on the engine until i pay for a windscreen replacement?’ , he replied with ‘I don’t know about that as i am not a car dealer.’. I asked him a further question, ‘does scratched and dents of the casing of the Iphone also classed as ‘accidental damage’? ‘ he replied with ‘yes’. So i asked him why they replaced my other iphone 7 two weeks ago, he told me he could not talk about the previous device.

I asked him if i was to pay for the screen replacement, would they actually replace the screen? He said no, but that the phone would simply be recycled.

I told him that it seems as though apple are aware that there are issues with their phones, however, when they know they need to replace their phones, they try to squeeze every last penny out of you by putting in place biased and unrealistic warranty guidelines. It is not my fault that apple designed their phones in such a way that they cannot replace parts in them. I simply expect to spend £719 on a phone that does one simple thing, and that is charge.

I am extremely disappointed with Apple’s Customer Service

I have been through this on my iPhone6 and tried all the options, and I think I found the one that works plus some other temp fixes. And it's clearly my phone, not chargers, because the same chargers work just great on my iPad.

Fail-safe option:

-- plug in charger, "accessory not supported" will pop up, turn off phone. Wait a normal charging time. Turn on phone. Phone will be charged. It sounds like from others, this option will work every time, and for 4+ months it has for me! The downside: no phone backups. But hey, it's better than forking over $ for a new phone when you're still paying off your current one. Also, don't turn off phone and then plug in, because it will just turn on and not recognize the charger.

Other options that may work, temporarily, and will allow you to back up your phone when it is working:

-- early on in the problem, turning my phone off and on worked. But that stopped.

-- "resting" my phone worked for a while, but that also stopped. Meaning if I tried to charge it when I went to bed it would give the "not supported" message, but if I plugged it in first thing in the morning before I used it at all, it would charge. Sometimes I'd have to rest it for an overnight, sometimes just an hour or even half an hour.

-- I got a non-Apple approved charger (gasp!), but hear me out. It's one of those magnetic chargers. So you keep a piece in the charging port in the iPhone at all times, rather than repeatedly adding and removing the charger. In theory it will result in less damage to the port. And I didn't get this charger until after my phone stopped charging while on all the time. But here's the odd thing: after switching chargers, sometimes my phone charges while on now! Not all the time, it goes in and out, weeks where it will charge when on and then weeks when I can only charge it by turning it off while plugged in. But when it's working correctly with the mag charger, every time I've tried switching to the Apple-approved charger, it stops working. So now I exclusively use the mag charger.

Most importantly, if your phone is less than a year old, take it in to get it fixed/replaced for free! Mine started doing this after 9 months, but it eventually charged when still on, so I didn't bother taking it in. It took until 16 months to stop charging when on reliably, and by that point Apple laughed at me when I said it was an issue before the one year was up and it's my fault for not taking it in (I mean, it is, but they were still pretty condescending about an issue with their product)

Turning airport on and back off will only work for checking if the cable is mfi certified or an Apple cable. If the message is being displayed for one that is then it will be a connector problem or a defective cable. Turning airport on or off should not affect charging and either way it is a kludge not a solution.

Not helpful buddy. I have worked in computer industry in technical services since 1987 and based on all tests I have done, it is very unlikely to be a hardware issue. Of course, there is always that 1% chance. The only step the genius bar technician gave me was to pay $550 to replace the phone as he did not have a clue why the phone was doing that. Therefore, following company guidelines, he automatically classified it a "hardware failure".

If a game crashes on your phone, while everything else works fine, it must be a hardware failure too when you follow this kind of policy. His cables did not work. My cable (original Apple) works fine when it is not rejected as an "Unsupported Accessory". When I turn off the phone, it charges well overnight without any issue. If the port was dirty (it was confirmed as clean at the Apple store) or defective, it would not work when the phone is powered off or when Airport mode is activated and then de-activated after reboot.

Bottom line, no point to hold our breath on this as Apple will only fix this issue when there will be enough casualties to finally become public news in the media. By then, they will fix the issue in the O/S to avoid Public Relations backlash.

Teechnically that message appears if something is wrong with either the charging cable, charging port or the charger block. In most cases, it requires you to purchase apple-made or apple authorized products, which to some people may seem too expensive, the best solution is to get an apple authorized cable or charger or better yet chuck your iphone in the trash bin and get an android phone where you can use any 3rd party charger.

Same to me it won’t charging after buying new cable for extra spot. Than testing with the old one was just fine. The cable works with others gadget at the store but not mine. So it’s definitely not a hardware issue. Thinking or maybe not going to use another apple product coz they never try to fix the problem since IOS 10. Really a big failure and customer are being just left behind it. Also battery drain very fast at IOS 10

This may not be the solution for everyone, but I did notice a pattern of behavior that seems to hold constant. For me (iphone 5S, late 2013, OS 10.3.3, all Apple brand chargers & cables) the problem seems to be associated with heat from the battery. If I've been using a high-drain app that causes the battery to heat up that's when the error message seems to appear. I let the phone cool down, plug the cable in, and it's likely to charge OK.

I know the phone is old and the battery is near the end of its life. Also, the Lightning port has been used a lot and so may be somewhat worn.

I theorize that, at least with my phone, a combination of wear on the Lightning port plus expansion of metal from heat cause the contacts to be less physically secure. I theorize that the more recent OS's have code that makes them interpret a poor contact as if it were a non-standard accessory.

Unfortunately the Genius Bar advised me that the Lightning port is not a part that can be replaced, so when the connector gets worn the entire phone needs to be replaced. I am disappointed at Apple for designing products that are not repairable, although I suspect part of that decision was to allow the smallest physical size possible for all the components - a replaceable connector would likely be bulkier resulting in a larger, heavier phone. (It's also possible that Apple, like so many companies, includes "planned obsolescence" in their marketing and sales strategies. But I don't think that is the ONLY reason why these phones fail)

I’m experiencing this issue as well I bought ANOTHER Apple cord since that’s the only brand that seems to work for more than 4 months but I’m getting this message after about 2 months!!! Help Apple.

If you want help from Apple you should make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. See the Contact Support link at the upper right of every page of these forums.

I wish that was a valid option. I’m 2.5 hours to an Apple store. They might just need to figure it out compared to me driving to an Apple store.

No one at Apple is a mind reader. If you don't tell them you have a problem, they won't solve it. If you're not near an Apple Store, use the Contact Support link to get in touch with them.

To follow up to my post I've been using aftermarket chargers with my Iphone since I got it new without issues. Then boom as soon as I do the update It's not supported anymore?? Anyone who says or thinks this is a hardware issue is blind... It's Apples way to force people to live and breath Apple products. Proprietary software is one thing but now hardware too?? Last straw for me...
