Hi there, diz67!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I understand that your iPhone 6 Plus is occasionally shutting off unexpectedly, regardless of the battery percentage. You noticed this began occurring after updating to iOS 10.3. I rely on my own iPhone all day, so I know it's important for it to be on when you need it. I'd be happy to help!

My recommendation is to take a look at the following article: If your iOS device restarts or displays the Apple logo or a spinning gear unexpectedly

The first step is to make sure your iOS software is up to date; since yours already is, you can move onto the second recommendation and go from there.

Cheers!

I have an iPhone 5s and this morning was the 4th time is spontaneously shut off, turns black and will not turn back on. I typically have to wait hours for it to then spontaneously turn back on. There is no rhyme or reason. My last update was the 10.3, so at least reading through these strings I see this may be the culprit, yet it's unnerving to think the latest update won't fix this problem. I was actually going to just order a new iPhone, but it sounds like this won't be a good solution either? I am only in this discussion because I 'googled' how to fix this problem and this is the latest discussion. So, I am crossing my fingers SOMEONE/AN APPLE EXPERT will provide a genius EASY solution to this issue????

I have 5s and I think it started to shut itself down around the time I got ios 10.3, but I am not totally sure about exact timing. It got worse, so I brought the phone to Apple store. They examined my phone for weeks, then replaced it to a new phone. I restored my programs from backup and it worked just fine for a month or so, now this new phone started to shut itself down too! In the end it was doing it so frequently that I was not able to restore even. Finally I was able to restore, and the newest ios version 11.1. was installed. But guess what: it still shuts keeps shutting itself down... I have no idea what to do.

Mine does this too, usually early morning. I use the phone as my alarm clock, the alarm will sound, I put the alarm off and then when I check again the phone is completely black. I plug the phone in, first it registers virtually no battery, then the apple logo comes up, phone reboots itself and shows its real battery level which is normally over 50% and then proceeds to charge and function normally. I am on iOS 11.1.0. Its a flipping nuisance..

Been struggling with this issue for 6 months with a 5S. Short answer is moisture. Put the phone in rice for several hours.

For those of you curious as to what and why, read on. This first happened to me out of the blue. Phone would shut off randomly, and the only way to get it working again was a hard reset. Took it to the Apple store, and their assessment was a software issue. They erased my phone and restored to factory condition. Seemed to work at first, but no joy. Called Apple support and the assessment was that it was due to me letting the phone die before charging. Worked fine for 3 months, and then it started dying randomly again. Got past that, and a month later, same thing all over again. So, I started looking at what was going on around the times that this behavior was exhibited. Turns out that exposure to high humidity (weather, proximity to a pot of boiling water) was a common denominator. Searching for an answer on the interwebs, I stumbled across a post from someone experiencing similar problems who ended up taking their phone to a repair shop. When the phone was opened up, there was visible moisture inside, and this person swore the phone had never gotten wet. So, I figured I had nothing to lose by burying my phone in rice. Sure enough, after several hours of therapy with Uncle Ben, it is performing flawlessly.

I have this problem on a 5S. It happens when I have either data and/or WiFI enabled; when I launch an Apple app (Maps, Camera, Photos, Music). Sometimes battery indicator, when phone has been re-stared, shows nothing odd but more often than not, it'll go from 10% to saying 40%. I have even had the scenario where it appears to konk-out through lack of battery (i.e. 0% charge) then shows 40-ish% when put on charge!!

Now, I am very careful with batteries and still treat these new kinds like they were the old 'run to charge indicator before charging' batteries and my 4th gen iPad has a very healthy battery... so, I don't think I'm doing anything particularly wrong.

I note that Apple admitted that a 'small number of 6S devices' had a problem and had a program to fix it (see: http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-statement-on-iphone-shutdown-issue-2016-12) But reading this thread it seems it is not model specific?

I am about to call Apple about it.
