ios 10.2.1 to 10.3 battery drain

Hi there,

Iphone 7, Since upgrading to 10.2.1 and now 10.3, The battery life has been horrible.

Especially in standby where it can be charged at 100% and within 4 hours sitting and not being used it will drop 20% battery, Its starting to get very annoying as i'm now having to charge my iphone twice a day, I would be lucky to get 2-3 hrs device usage according to battery settings. I also have friends with the same issue since updating to 10.2.1 and beyond.

Any ideas on what is causing it as i've tried the 10.3.2 public beta and no change in issue.

Starting to with i hadn't sold my Pixel.

Let me try to be helpful. Whatever the problem is, it is NOT a problem with the specific version (in this case, 10.3.3). If you assume it is a problem with the version you will never resolve it. There are a couple of reasons I say that. The first is that this was a trivial change, adding a few lines of code to block a hacker from taking over the radio chip. There is no way such a small change could have created a battery drain problem.

The more general reason is that in the 10 years and dozens of updates that have been released, there are a small number of phones that report increased battery drain after EVERY update. The number of reported problems for 10.3.3 is an order of magnitude fewer than for several other recent releases, and even those were small numbers. There are only two cases where this was actually a problem with the release; 2.0 and 3.1.0. And the many thousands of posts after each of these releases demonstrated that.

If it isn't the version itself, what causes the sudden change in battery life? Sometimes when a version is installed it causes a problem in an app. The update process terminates running apps, and not all of the 1 million+ apps are coded to handle that gracefully. When they restart they may have lost the status of whatever they were doing. They keep retrying and failing, consuming battery in the process.

Another possible related cause is Microsoft Exchange. There is a flaw in the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. It has been there forever; fixing it would require a protocol change, which would break billions of devices that use ActiveSync. So Microsoft doesn't fix it. If an ActiveSync device loses its place in what it was doing it creates a new connection to the Exchange server. But the Exchange server doesn't know about the problem. It accepts the new connection, but doesn't kill the old one, which keeps trying and failing, again using energy. If you have an MS Exchange account and you have a battery problem (even not associated with an iOS update) either turn off the account in Settings, restart the phone, and turn it back on. Or delete it, restart, and add it back.

In general, go to Settings/Battery and see which apps are using the most energy. Wait at least a day after the update to do this, so you have 24 hours worth of data.

Troubleshooting steps for sudden changes in battery life:

  • Kill all running processes, then restart the phone. Note that this will not necessarily fix the problem of stuck apps, however, because they may restart in the same state they were in when killed.
  • Connect to iTunes, restore iOS, and restore your backup. This does 2 things: it deals with the possible but unlikely problem that the iOS version on the phone is corrupted, and it also assures that all apps restart fresh. Remember that app data must be restored, which uses energy, so wait at least 24 hours to see if the problem is resolved. If not:
  • Repeat, and set up the phone as new. Do not log in to iCloud. Do not install any email accounts, calendars or contacts. Do not install any apps. If the problem is still present after a few hours your phone has a hardware problem.
  • If this does resolve the problem try restoring your backup. If the problem comes back you have corrupt data for one or more apps. You can try to figure out which app from Settings/Battery.

Have an iPhone 6 and am experiencing battery problems from iOS 10.2.1 onwards. Hoped it would be solved with update 10.3.1 but it actually made it worse. Battery drops of 20% without usage. From 20% to shut down in minutes. From 34% to 59% after reset. I contacted support and they advised me to do a clean installation.. I don't think Apple should put its customer through this kind of trouble as it appears clearly to be a iOS software issue.

I agree on the advice saying "Contact Apple Support". Problem comes when I have done so and they have run their diagnostics tool and nothing was found - and the problem is still there. And it's still there even after the phone (6S Plus) has been diagnosed by a technician, while I had a replacement phone. And while it was at the techy, it got restored to factory settings and I never restored it to the old version - I just installed some of my formerly installed apps again, accepting a huge data loss in order to get a functioning phone again.

I used to be able to take video with my iPhone. I can still do that, but it's now pretty constricted, as using the camera for 1 minute burns 5% of the battery (taking a normal picture uses 1-2% battery). Previously, I could record video for much longer periods of time (a claim I can prove. I have recorded hours of video without recharging the phone). Safari also has a problem: When browsing, that app uses 1% battery per minute. When updating an app, we talk 1% battery per 50 MB downloaded.

Is that acceptable? I don't think so, and I am pretty convinced that this is a software issue. Why? Because I don't believe that my battery has suddenly malfunctioned. I mean, it has now been diagnosed 3 times and if those tests are to be believed, my battery doesn't have a problem.

Basically, my iPhone is still under warranty according to Danish law. It is not working within the parameters specified by Apple. But no one can actually determine what the problem is. And I can honestly say that if the phone had been advertised with the current de facto battery usage, I would never have bought it.

If you sent your phone for repairs but they still can't solve your problems, I think Apple will replace your phone with a brand new unit, especially since it's still covered under warranty.

My phone also turned out to be 100% perfect in Apple's diagnostics tests, but they couldn't solve the battery issue and gave me a brand new unit as replacement.

Regarding data loss: you should back up your phone (either to iCloud or to your computer) before sending it in for repair. When you get your phone back / get a brand new unit you can restore all your data back to the phone.

I Contacted apple support and a technician looked into my phone, and said the battery is ok and it passed all test, but also the problem is still here.
My warranty has passed out, so i cant apply to get a knew phone, but all i want to say is that we want a working phone which we paid multiple hundreds of euros!
at least let Apple give us the option to downgrade to the last ios which was working 10.2 or 10.1

My phone was out of warranty. But because Apple Support has tried so many solutions and failed to solve my problem, they decided to bear the cost of my phone repair/replacement. The good thing about approaching Apple Support is that, if they fail to solve your problem (and if your phone doesn't have any physical or liquid damages), and your phone legitimately suffers from a problem (that can be objectively observed, like battery depletion and phone feeling warm when idle) they'll likely give you a replacement unit FOC.

Yes.. I have that issue too.. and if you search so do a lot of people. My battery drains if I use it plugged in, is very slow to charge (more than 7 hours for just 50%. I checked battery usage by app, uninstalled them, stopped background app refresh, gps usage.. dimmed screen, stopped email fetch.. I basically put my phone into the dark ages, and still no change. I checked for debris, tried different authentic iPhone cables.. I've restored as new, with no apps installed for 24 hours.. and same result. Did online diagnostics to be told "battery looked good". Lol long story short.. nothing suggested to "prolong battery life" helped, at all.

So you're not crazy.. ever since the update my phone has been screwy. (Even as I type this with my screen barely lit enough to see, I am plugged into wall and have lost 2%). Has it been brought to anyone's attention? Probably not.. all we can do is hope for an update that fixes issue. Below is a log of one day (I kept it for 15.. all the same)

5:15 off charger 100%

5:30 @ 95% after 20 min messenger call wifi only selected

5:50 @ 92% on airplane mode, take off to make cell phone call 3 mins - then back on airplane mode

6:10 (1 hour off charger) still on airplane mode @ 85%

9:00 am @ 70% still on airplane mode

10 am @ 60% still on airplane mode

10:30 turned wifi on to send message then back on airplane mode @ 58%

10:35 off airplane mode to use WhatsApp

11:00 back on airplane mode @ 46%

11:30 wifi on to send messages then back on airplane mode @ 42%

11:40 back on airplane mode after messages sent (10 min usage) @ 38%

12:20 @ 34% cell put on charger in airplane mode

12:30 @ 33% in airplane mode charging

2:00 @ 50% in airplane mode charging

(1.5 hrs charging gained 27%)

3:00 @ 68% in airplane mode charging

(2.5 hrs charging gained 35%)

4:00

70% airplane mode charging

(3.5 hours charging gained 37%)

6:00 @ 78% in airplane mode charging

(5.5 hrs charging gained 45%)

6:30 @ 83% in airplane mode charging

(6 hrs charging gained 50%)

Removed from charger

That's heading towards 12 hours to fully charge from 33%.. and on AIRPLANE mode and NOT using phone! If I use it at all.. cell.. wifi.. I actually lose charge while plugged in.

Why should users trouble shoot the phone?? If Apple roll out an update they should ensure that it doesn't corrupt the phone. That is what a beta test is for. If there is a risk, then a solution should be found to stop the rogue apps from creating this mess or send out a small fix which has all the suggested fixes to reset everything.
People pay a premium for Apple products and should therefore reasonably expect a better update service.

Lawrence and others, its not acceptable for Apple to simply ignore these forums and expect customers to spend what seems to be a huge amount of time doing Apples job and some even not getting a resolution. They aren't technical and don't want to be.
To answer your question about why a huge number aren't complaining it is simply because they could be bothered and are all hoping and expecting Apple to fix it. Others like me are holding off from updating to 10.3.1 as it clearly looks like pants at the moment.

Hi thanks for the suggestion and insight.

I have to say that I'm still enjoying nearly 2 days of battery life on my 6s Plus and guessing its because I have held back on updating and still on 10.1.1.

This update seems to be creating quite a bit more negative comments than I would have expected. This battery knobbling and company response is something that I experienced with android last year (unfortunately not resolved) which is why I left and joined the dark side (Apple). Ho hum. Cross fingers.

I'm on 10.3.1 on my 7. Since the update I'm appalled by the battery drain! I've disabled cellular data, wifi assist, apps running in background, almost all notifications (keep weather alerts) and all the other "tips" to prevent battery drain. NOTHING helps. I've deleted apps. I hate this update. It needs a fix now. The only thing I can't disable is the pairing with my Apple Watch & I suspect this is a battery drain. However- even when I don't wear the watch it is awful. I can be at 90% ... check my email over wifi & 20 min later I'm at 35%. *** Apple!!!

I'm actually considering buying a Pixle now ...

May 4, 2017 1:52 AM in response to Danjohn1

I've had the issue too.. posted a few times looking for answers. Tried every suggestion to fix, prolong battery.. etc.. none of it worked of course, which was frustrating.

I even restored "new" and used phone without any outside app influence.. same issues. That alone would tell me something "apple" made (like the iOS) was causing the issue.

I've dealt with the problem for almost 3 weeks now (or since whenever the update came out), phone tethered to an external battery source just so I could use it throughout the day..

This morning.. I woke up and had to log in using passcode (which means my phone reset sometime during the night on its own).. and guess what? By some miracle everything is back to normal. None of the issues I had before with Fast drain, slow charge, or drop in life while charging and using are present.

I didn't do anything, make any changes (aside for a large amount of app updates yesterday and today).. whatever reset my phone in the middle of the night, kicked my phone back to normal after I logged in to it.

Any ideas? I'd say it was an app hogging power, but why would it still have the issues when I restored to new?

May 4, 2017 2:27 PM in response to Danjohn1

I have iPhone 6 and just put 2 & 2 together after turning phone off to sleep and when woke up and. Powered up phone it was at half the battery percentage from this morning. (70%>>>35%)

I was noticing lately in dimly lit rooms that even when phone is locked the home screen is still visible (barely noticeable) I confirmed my suspicions by looking at Battery Usage in last 24 hours! Home and Lock Screen is using 39% of my battery!!! I would bet my life on it that this is an IOS update issue...
