ios 10.2.1 to 10.3 battery drain

Hi there,

Iphone 7, Since upgrading to 10.2.1 and now 10.3, The battery life has been horrible.

Especially in standby where it can be charged at 100% and within 4 hours sitting and not being used it will drop 20% battery, Its starting to get very annoying as i'm now having to charge my iphone twice a day, I would be lucky to get 2-3 hrs device usage according to battery settings. I also have friends with the same issue since updating to 10.2.1 and beyond.

Any ideas on what is causing it as i've tried the 10.3.2 public beta and no change in issue.

Starting to with i hadn't sold my Pixel.

Let me try to be helpful. Whatever the problem is, it is NOT a problem with the specific version (in this case, 10.3.3). If you assume it is a problem with the version you will never resolve it. There are a couple of reasons I say that. The first is that this was a trivial change, adding a few lines of code to block a hacker from taking over the radio chip. There is no way such a small change could have created a battery drain problem.

The more general reason is that in the 10 years and dozens of updates that have been released, there are a small number of phones that report increased battery drain after EVERY update. The number of reported problems for 10.3.3 is an order of magnitude fewer than for several other recent releases, and even those were small numbers. There are only two cases where this was actually a problem with the release; 2.0 and 3.1.0. And the many thousands of posts after each of these releases demonstrated that.

If it isn't the version itself, what causes the sudden change in battery life? Sometimes when a version is installed it causes a problem in an app. The update process terminates running apps, and not all of the 1 million+ apps are coded to handle that gracefully. When they restart they may have lost the status of whatever they were doing. They keep retrying and failing, consuming battery in the process.

Another possible related cause is Microsoft Exchange. There is a flaw in the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. It has been there forever; fixing it would require a protocol change, which would break billions of devices that use ActiveSync. So Microsoft doesn't fix it. If an ActiveSync device loses its place in what it was doing it creates a new connection to the Exchange server. But the Exchange server doesn't know about the problem. It accepts the new connection, but doesn't kill the old one, which keeps trying and failing, again using energy. If you have an MS Exchange account and you have a battery problem (even not associated with an iOS update) either turn off the account in Settings, restart the phone, and turn it back on. Or delete it, restart, and add it back.

In general, go to Settings/Battery and see which apps are using the most energy. Wait at least a day after the update to do this, so you have 24 hours worth of data.

Troubleshooting steps for sudden changes in battery life:

  • Kill all running processes, then restart the phone. Note that this will not necessarily fix the problem of stuck apps, however, because they may restart in the same state they were in when killed.
  • Connect to iTunes, restore iOS, and restore your backup. This does 2 things: it deals with the possible but unlikely problem that the iOS version on the phone is corrupted, and it also assures that all apps restart fresh. Remember that app data must be restored, which uses energy, so wait at least 24 hours to see if the problem is resolved. If not:
  • Repeat, and set up the phone as new. Do not log in to iCloud. Do not install any email accounts, calendars or contacts. Do not install any apps. If the problem is still present after a few hours your phone has a hardware problem.
  • If this does resolve the problem try restoring your backup. If the problem comes back you have corrupt data for one or more apps. You can try to figure out which app from Settings/Battery.

I had the best battery life ever on iPhone 7 using iOS 10.2.1. Then I made the huge mistake of upgrading to iOS 10.3.1 which uses a different file system and created the shortest worst battery life ever. I agree that if Apple does not come clean and fix their new operating system they are going to start losing customers. Apple customers want long reliable battery life and don't care about a new display.

This now battery drain feature introduced by Appli in IOS 10.3 is a feature Apple is very proud of. Apple love this new feature as it involved the user so much more than previous versions as they continuously look at their screens to determine how much battery life they have left.

No previous upgrade has enticed the user to look at their screens so much while not actually being involved in the use of an actual app. This feature has created a union with the user where they have a need to look at the screen to determine battery life remaining like nothing else has in the past.

This has expended the carry around apple range for these users to include the need to carry a charger and continuously look for a power outlet to plug into. Apple may al;so looking to add a battery boost charger to tehir range so people can walk around without having to remain plugged in.

It is obvious Apple is proud of this new feature as they have done nothing to rectify it in the new version of software and continue to not respond to those who are not as pleased with this upgrade as Apple is.

Ensure you download IOS 10.3 if you want to spend more intimate time with your phone screen looking at the batter life remaining.

Same problem here with an iPhone 6 and 10.3.x (and maybe also having the issue with 10.2.x). Issue is getting increasingly worst... sometimes only 1 hour until phone is death and sometimes spontaneous reboots during usage. I think it is time to visit the Apple Store soon.

What I noticed in this thread that other devices besides iPhones are hardly reported to be affected by this issue, only iPhones. My question is this issue maybe related to the combination iPhone and iWatch or are there also people here having the drain issue without having an iWatch coupled?

May 31, 2017 3:45 AM in response to Danjohn1

I'm facing the same issue. I have an iPhone SE. I updated to ios 10.3.2 and saw a drastic change in battery life. I charged my phone to 100% and it went to 50% in just 2 hours use and 3 hours and 30 minutes standby. When normally it lasts a whole day. I've tried the hard reset as well and i have all the apps i had in ios 10.3.1 nothing new.

Apple should look into this matter asap. I paid $500. And likewise all of us paid a lot for their iPhones.

I originally wrote about my battery drain a few months ago after "upgrading" to 10.3.1. I tried all the obvious fixes and went the extra mile of changing out the battery and resetting the 6s phone back to factory new, which of course didn't help as it is most certainly an OS problem. The best thing Apple could do is allow us to roll back to 10.2, where our phones were working properly. in earlier posts Lawrence suggested there aren't enough pages of posts for this to be considered a problem. I'm of the same "vintage" as Lawrence and have owned Apple products since the Apple 11e, a long time ago and my earlier post was my very first online post, (this is now my second), and only found this forum by trying to search for answers. That's how high my frustration level is!! You can bet there are thousands more frustrated Apple users out there and not posting, but unfortunately we're a statistically insignificantly number for Apple to be concerned about. Sad that Apple won't fix this issue, it's easy to sign off on a rollback to 10.2 and let us worry about the security issues.

It seems there are many of us having battery issues since the update. Before I looked at this message board I took my iPhone 6 to the Apple Store. I still have time on the original factory warranty and assumed they would help me replace it. Instead they tested the battery while I watched and it came up at 100% perfect during various tests that took about 20 minutes. I left the store bewildered by this seemingly impossible result. Now that I know many others are having problems my question is, what are we suppose to do?

Jun 3, 2017 3:28 PM in response to Kyblood1

We have to submit via the apple support query for the iphone. I please everyone to go to the Apple support website and fill out the short form to report the problem, I am so frustrated that i filled out the form already 6-7 times, everytime I put in a different email adress. Thats the only way they will know about the issue, since they are not following this forum.

please! Everyone submit a short form about the bug/issue to apple iphone support.

I have now had my fifth iPhone 7 for two full weeks. The first iPhone 7 was bought on launch day, and began having rapid battery drain problems while still using iOS 10.2.1. The next four iPhones were replacements, and of those, the first three also had the same battery drain and overheating problems, all using iOS 10.3.

The latest replacement iPhone 7, I'm pleased to report, has better battery life than the iPhone I got on launch day. It has warmed up once or twice when it was getting heavy usage, but the battery did not drain abnormally fast even then. Standby and usage reports are accurate, and there does not seem to be any mysterious network activity while the phone is idle. For the record, since Apple allowed me to restore from a backup for my this phone, it is running the same apps that I've been using for a long time, so that seems to rule out apps as the problem. And as others have said, the worst app in terms of battery usage was Safari, at least when I was having problems.

I still have no idea what was causing the problems, but if you are still having issues, you may want to consider the possibility that it's bad hardware, or even a combination of bad hardware and a problem with iOS 10.3.1. If your iPhone is under warranty and Apple cannot solve the battery drain problem, they should replace it. I know it's a hassle and I was not happy about spending hours setting up the replacement phones as a new phone, but the results have been worth it.

Apple tech support is going to want you to go through all the usual battery conservation trouble-shooting, which takes time, too. But I finally have a phone that I can actually use the way it was designed to be used, without constantly checking the battery level and charging it all the time just to keep it running.

This isn't a direct reply to you. This is just venting on some more. I use to love my iPhone, all the way back to the first generation...now I'm stressed and annoyed all the time with having to charge it all the time. Being in Jakarta I have no choice but to start looking at a new type of phone since Apple doesn't have any stores in Indonesia. It's a bummer having to switch but Apple isn't going to ever issue a rollback.

A lifetime Apple user (back to PowerPCs etc...) is now having to find an alternative for their phone need. This wouldn't have happened under Steve Jobs.

I know it wasn't a direct reply to me, but I wanted to let you know that I felt the same way. I was ready to get an Android phone if the problem could not be fixed. I don't care how great a phone is (and I much prefer iOS to Android), if the battery drains the way it has for many of us here, the phone is useless.

I realize that your situation is much more complicated since there is no Apple store there. Has Apple phone support told you what options you may have? In the US, they have an express replacement program that ships a replacement phone in a couple of days.

I posted in this thread about a week ago about battery life issues after installing 10.3.2. The battery life is now back much closer to normal. I initially turned off background refresh on most apps, but that didn't help. I also shut down all my apps and restarted. No help. I checked battery usage, and it didn't seem abnormal for anything except the apple message app which I found very odd. I don't text that much, but it is open most of the time. Several of my apps have updated recently, so I assume one of them was the culprit. I suspect AirWatch which is our corporate mail app that interfaces with Exchange and/or WAZE which is a battery hog anyway. It's stressful to check your phone and the battery is low when you haven't touched it for hours. I'm glad it's better.

What helped for me (after trying every trick in the book) was switching on the energy saving mode all the time (settings->battery->energy saving). On my phone when I leave this permanently enabled the battery drain is reduced to expected behaviour proving this is an software issue.

Be aware energy saving is switched of by the OS when 80% is reached during charging so enable it again when this level is reached...

I thought I should try to call Apple support via the facility on their website to explain the situation.

The summary is that he claimed there has been no official comment from Apple and he and his team had not heard of any issues relating to this problem and that he would pass it onto his team and management!!

Whilst he was saying this, I felt he was lying through his teeth though and tired of doling out the same statements.

Some of you may want to try this route although its not as measurable as submitting a report. However, it does feel better as you're actually talking to someone and who knows, maybe some of them may pass on the comments to management, but I don't hold my breath...

If you have read these posts, you'll see that:

Apple dont read these entries

Don't admit anything is wrong

Have no fix planned

Your only hope is to change settings to make phone dumb

Uninstall and reinstall apps which are sucking up the power (even though they were absolutely fine before the update)

Logout of iCloud so those backups won't work

Switch to Airplane mode so you can't receive calls or email.

Buy a new battery which most find doesn't resolve anything

Take to local Apple genius who will run tests, not find anything wrong, sell you a battery

Report a problem through your Apple support on this website apparently and hopefully Apple look at these once and a while.

Call Apple support and they will say it's the first they've heard of this problem.

I think this summarises the 35 or so pages. I fully expect this comment to be removed as a moderator will report it as being a bit negative.

Good luck.
