ios 10.2.1 to 10.3 battery drain

Hi there,

Iphone 7, Since upgrading to 10.2.1 and now 10.3, The battery life has been horrible.

Especially in standby where it can be charged at 100% and within 4 hours sitting and not being used it will drop 20% battery, Its starting to get very annoying as i'm now having to charge my iphone twice a day, I would be lucky to get 2-3 hrs device usage according to battery settings. I also have friends with the same issue since updating to 10.2.1 and beyond.

Any ideas on what is causing it as i've tried the 10.3.2 public beta and no change in issue.

Starting to with i hadn't sold my Pixel.

Let me try to be helpful. Whatever the problem is, it is NOT a problem with the specific version (in this case, 10.3.3). If you assume it is a problem with the version you will never resolve it. There are a couple of reasons I say that. The first is that this was a trivial change, adding a few lines of code to block a hacker from taking over the radio chip. There is no way such a small change could have created a battery drain problem.

The more general reason is that in the 10 years and dozens of updates that have been released, there are a small number of phones that report increased battery drain after EVERY update. The number of reported problems for 10.3.3 is an order of magnitude fewer than for several other recent releases, and even those were small numbers. There are only two cases where this was actually a problem with the release; 2.0 and 3.1.0. And the many thousands of posts after each of these releases demonstrated that.

If it isn't the version itself, what causes the sudden change in battery life? Sometimes when a version is installed it causes a problem in an app. The update process terminates running apps, and not all of the 1 million+ apps are coded to handle that gracefully. When they restart they may have lost the status of whatever they were doing. They keep retrying and failing, consuming battery in the process.

Another possible related cause is Microsoft Exchange. There is a flaw in the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. It has been there forever; fixing it would require a protocol change, which would break billions of devices that use ActiveSync. So Microsoft doesn't fix it. If an ActiveSync device loses its place in what it was doing it creates a new connection to the Exchange server. But the Exchange server doesn't know about the problem. It accepts the new connection, but doesn't kill the old one, which keeps trying and failing, again using energy. If you have an MS Exchange account and you have a battery problem (even not associated with an iOS update) either turn off the account in Settings, restart the phone, and turn it back on. Or delete it, restart, and add it back.

In general, go to Settings/Battery and see which apps are using the most energy. Wait at least a day after the update to do this, so you have 24 hours worth of data.

Troubleshooting steps for sudden changes in battery life:

  • Kill all running processes, then restart the phone. Note that this will not necessarily fix the problem of stuck apps, however, because they may restart in the same state they were in when killed.
  • Connect to iTunes, restore iOS, and restore your backup. This does 2 things: it deals with the possible but unlikely problem that the iOS version on the phone is corrupted, and it also assures that all apps restart fresh. Remember that app data must be restored, which uses energy, so wait at least 24 hours to see if the problem is resolved. If not:
  • Repeat, and set up the phone as new. Do not log in to iCloud. Do not install any email accounts, calendars or contacts. Do not install any apps. If the problem is still present after a few hours your phone has a hardware problem.
  • If this does resolve the problem try restoring your backup. If the problem comes back you have corrupt data for one or more apps. You can try to figure out which app from Settings/Battery.

I went to the Apple store in Haarlem (the Netherlands) and they concluded the battery was slightly swollen and definitely in bad condition (measured). They swapped the 2 year old iPhone 6 for the price of a new battery and after I restored it with my latest backup it seems to behave better...

After a 12 hour use it discharged from 100 to 44% which is reasonable but this morning after charging through the night it was still on 44%... Then I left it on the charger and when I just start using the phone the battery indicator jump from 44% to 100% (in an instance). So something is definitely fishy with the battery indicator software...

English please: I wasn't extra insured. Because the housing was a bit extended due to the swollen battery they decided they could not simply replace the battery and decided to replace the phone and only charge for the new battery...

It seems like the problem is mostly resolved (battery is not dead in a couple of hours anymore)... This morning the battery indicator did not work as intended though (was jumping from 44 to 100% when I start working on it while it was on the charger all night). Since then I removed it from the charger and it is 5 hours later still on 99% without charging.

Im having the same exact problem......And when I call in about it everyone seems like this is something new that they haven't heard about, which is extremely troubling. The functionality of this phone with almost 2 hrs of battery life is horrible. Im given no reassurance about this, so I feel that I may have to get a new phone (I won't be getting an iPhone). Has apple acknowledged this issue?

Well, it looks like I'm the only iPad owner affected by this sudden battery drain issue but like most users here, I observed a sharp and inexplicable battery drain after upgrading from iOS 10.2.1 to 10.3.1. Previously, the ipad would be on standby the whole day and lose 1 to 2% of its battery charge. Just overnight following the update, I now disconnect it from the charger at 100% in the morning and the battery level is down to 40% 7 hours later. Tried all the tips shared in this forum to no avail. Even backup/restored it a couple of times, left it in airplane mode (it does slow down the drain a bit), and nothing helped. The device (iPad Air 2) is out of warranty but if I was convinced there is a problem with the battery I would have it replaced. I initially believed it was an issue with the update and that it may not be playing well with one of the apps I have installed but after resetting the iPad and before restoring from backup, the battery drain was no better. In conclusion, I am stuck with an iPad that has worse battery life than an ultra-cheap no-name tablet.

My iPhone 7 is experiencing the same thing and worse. After updating to ios 10.3.2 three days ago, my phone is always heating while using the apps I always used before which doesn't cause so much heat. And after charging my phone to 100% I unplugged it from the power outlet, off all apps, the mobile data and location, and leave it overnight and when I woke up the phone battery is 0%. This doesn't make sense. What could have cause the battery to drain so much while in stand by?

My iPhone 6 has worked beautifully until just now. Strangely, while it was plugged in to my PC at work, it suddenly and rapidly discharged. Same PC, same cable, same phone, but I did allow the OS to be updated earlier this week. From what I have read, this seems to be an issue with the latest version of OS.

I am also seeing random freezes lasting a few seconds.

OS version 10.3.2 (14F89)

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Ive had my first iphone 6s since it was released never updated my ios... everything had been great! 4 days ago finally updated my ios to 10.3.2.... now instead of 4 bars of service I get no service and sometimes 1 bar but then everything drops and has connection issues. I have to charge my phone at least twice a day now before i could go a day and a half without a charge... and my audio isnt working on my phone I have to use my speaker to make phone calls. Apple can't figure it out; apple support is nice, but I have spent hours on the phone with them trying to toggle several settings and going up to level 3 tech supervisors.... this will be the last iphone I ever buy.

I downloaded the last update. Not the one at present and my iPad went downhill fast. Used to almost last all day and now it doesn't hold charge more than 45 minutes at most. Wow. Those it would be good update but if I'd known it. I would have waited but I didn't. Just darn bad judgement. Love my iPad Air but there's got to be a solution somewhere or llook out its Android time. I hate to but if we don't get support from apple then maybe it's time to move on

I have the same issue, I posted in the communties about it, but I have not inquired directly with Apple. My iPhone 7+ is barely 8 months old and it updated to 10.3.3 around 4pm EDT yesterday. The Battery drain is autobahn fast. I wonder if it is an app in the background that is not playing nice, like Twitter, or Netflix (not streaming, just searching for the next video victim) or a news app lurking. I even charged it for 2 hours before bed and without touching the phone it went from 100% to nearly 50% inside of 6 hours with Twitter notifications only - no WiFi, no Bluetooth, no calls!

There are loads of messages on the thread on how to check if its an app. Look at Settings\Battery and see which app is using up the battery (if there is any particular one).

Some recommend uninstalling and reinstalling that app.

Check all your apps are up to date.

No doubt some may not have an issue or will manage to resolve the issue by carrying out some of the recommendations. Others may never resolve it despite doing all the recommended or even after getting a new battery. It remains a mystery, but I would still maintain that some phones have chips which have not followed Apple's guidelines and are incompatible with the new iOS 10.x. Hence some have the problem, others don't.

I refuse to disable functions which just turn the phone into a "stupid phone". I can do that as I have only got 10.1.1 and still have 1.5 days of battery life with 1 charge. That is why I was asking it 10.3.3 resolved the issues.

I will continue to monitor this but reading early comments, it does seem unlikely that 10.3.3 didn't have an explicit fix (unless they are hiding it for fear of exposure).

Hi!

If you take the time to read the whole thread, you'll see that Lawrence is far beyond from the "apple fan boy" definition. It's some kind of troll that just comes here to say that we are all crazy and all the Apple products are always perfect. We stopped responding to Lawrence a lot of time ago, so don't feed the troll again.

As you can see in this, already, very long thread, there's no solution for this problem. The only solution is go to an Apple Store and try and try until they give you a whole new phone.

And don't forget to Contact Support and the top of this page, to let know to Apple about this problem, since they normally don't read this forum.

Same issue here 😟 First manifested on my wife's iPhone 6 a while ago not sure which exact iOS version - random battery drops and shutdowns. My 6 was better for much longer - my drain was more subtle and I wasn't getting the random shutdowns. However, I think after 10.3 mine nose dived a lot and now over the past week or two I've started getting big drops (as well as big jumps when you plug in to charge). 10.3.3 hasn't fixed either. Thinking of getting one of those little back up battery chargers for my wife as her phone just shuts off constantly.
