ios 10.2.1 to 10.3 battery drain

Hi there,

Iphone 7, Since upgrading to 10.2.1 and now 10.3, The battery life has been horrible.

Especially in standby where it can be charged at 100% and within 4 hours sitting and not being used it will drop 20% battery, Its starting to get very annoying as i'm now having to charge my iphone twice a day, I would be lucky to get 2-3 hrs device usage according to battery settings. I also have friends with the same issue since updating to 10.2.1 and beyond.

Any ideas on what is causing it as i've tried the 10.3.2 public beta and no change in issue.

Starting to with i hadn't sold my Pixel.

Let me try to be helpful. Whatever the problem is, it is NOT a problem with the specific version (in this case, 10.3.3). If you assume it is a problem with the version you will never resolve it. There are a couple of reasons I say that. The first is that this was a trivial change, adding a few lines of code to block a hacker from taking over the radio chip. There is no way such a small change could have created a battery drain problem.

The more general reason is that in the 10 years and dozens of updates that have been released, there are a small number of phones that report increased battery drain after EVERY update. The number of reported problems for 10.3.3 is an order of magnitude fewer than for several other recent releases, and even those were small numbers. There are only two cases where this was actually a problem with the release; 2.0 and 3.1.0. And the many thousands of posts after each of these releases demonstrated that.

If it isn't the version itself, what causes the sudden change in battery life? Sometimes when a version is installed it causes a problem in an app. The update process terminates running apps, and not all of the 1 million+ apps are coded to handle that gracefully. When they restart they may have lost the status of whatever they were doing. They keep retrying and failing, consuming battery in the process.

Another possible related cause is Microsoft Exchange. There is a flaw in the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. It has been there forever; fixing it would require a protocol change, which would break billions of devices that use ActiveSync. So Microsoft doesn't fix it. If an ActiveSync device loses its place in what it was doing it creates a new connection to the Exchange server. But the Exchange server doesn't know about the problem. It accepts the new connection, but doesn't kill the old one, which keeps trying and failing, again using energy. If you have an MS Exchange account and you have a battery problem (even not associated with an iOS update) either turn off the account in Settings, restart the phone, and turn it back on. Or delete it, restart, and add it back.

In general, go to Settings/Battery and see which apps are using the most energy. Wait at least a day after the update to do this, so you have 24 hours worth of data.

Troubleshooting steps for sudden changes in battery life:

  • Kill all running processes, then restart the phone. Note that this will not necessarily fix the problem of stuck apps, however, because they may restart in the same state they were in when killed.
  • Connect to iTunes, restore iOS, and restore your backup. This does 2 things: it deals with the possible but unlikely problem that the iOS version on the phone is corrupted, and it also assures that all apps restart fresh. Remember that app data must be restored, which uses energy, so wait at least 24 hours to see if the problem is resolved. If not:
  • Repeat, and set up the phone as new. Do not log in to iCloud. Do not install any email accounts, calendars or contacts. Do not install any apps. If the problem is still present after a few hours your phone has a hardware problem.
  • If this does resolve the problem try restoring your backup. If the problem comes back you have corrupt data for one or more apps. You can try to figure out which app from Settings/Battery.

Don't worry, I am trying to take steps to address the problem. 🙂 I just wanted to post here so that other users who are facing the same problem have a better idea of how widespread it really is.

I've tried a hard reset and re-install of iOS 10.3.1, but that did not fix the problem.

I'm now trying the suggestion of running the battery to flat and then charging it back up to 100%. Will post an update once I'm done with that.

People shouldn't have to perform troubleshooting in the first place after applying an OS update to their mobile phones and certainly not when it's an Apple product. I thought that was always one of the major benefits using Apple products...that Apple products simply work without users having to mess around in order to make them work as intended or did that change...?

This is just ridiculous and Apple should acknowledge this issue with no further delay and make sure to swiftly address the actual cause whatever that might be. Fact is they should have done this long time ago starting already with iOS 10.2.1 when the issue was introduced. If they would have acknowledged already back then...

"OK, we're sorry guys but looks like we screwed up a bit in the latest iOS version. We're using all needed resources to address the problem as swiftly as possible and you can all expect a new version in the very near future where the problem will have been permanently fixed. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this."

...now that would have been what you should be able to expect from a company such as Apple. Instead people now keep having the very same issue that started back in January and it's now mid April and still no real solution in sight and very quiet from Apple. Or did they yet confirm somewhere there's a severe issue still present in the latest version of their iOS?

I've said it before and I say it again, this is just ridiculous and a lesson that might turn out to be a very expensive one for Apple if they don't realize this and do a very quick 180.

If you review the history of the forum you will see that every time there has been an update since 2007 a few phones have battery drain issues. Not just the current update; EVERY update that has ever been released. It is primarily due to the fact that 3rd party apps frequently have bugs (noting that every bit of software ever released has had bugs), and occasionally those bugs manifest themselves in excessive battery drain because the app did not respond correctly to the update. The problem is always fixable. But posting rants in the Apple forum will not fix it. You have to find the app with the problem. While there are over 1 million apps in the app store, fortunately most people only have a few of them on their phone, so finding the bad one isn't usually that difficult.

I guess Apple could solve this by eliminating the app store, and not allowing any 3rd party apps. I doubt that would go over well, however.

I wouldn't use the word rant in this case, rather well-founded criticism.

I had lots of Apple devices throughout the years and I've never had this kind of severe battery issue before with any of my devices. Also I never saw the vast amount of people all saying they suffer from the same issue leaving them with an expensive product that is close to useless.

Considering the amount of people having this issue in combination with the amount of available apps in the app store don't you agree it's a bit odd how this huge amount of users are having this problem if the problem in fact is caused by only a few bad apps? And don't you agree it's equally odd this was not discovered during beta?

I don't really have much else to add that I didn't say already. I think it's a shame how this has been and still is being handled by Apple and like I said in a previous post chances after this are big my next device won't come with an apple logo printed on the back of it.

I think it's unfair to put the onus on the owner when a product fails in a routine upgrade of the OS (which was meant to improve the experience of using the device). In fact, I think it's important that other iPhone owners add their experiences, so that readers of the forum get a sense if the problem is identical in all cases, is widespread, etc. Some iPhone owners are tech savvy, but many are not. Not all have the confidence and knowledge to do their own debugging—what if they accidentally voided the warranty on their device? I think it's great that people are trying out ways to solve this on their own, but it shouldn't seen as their responsibility. When a machine fails, the machine is at fault, not the human using it.

Hi. Yes I also have the same issue with my iPhone SE. Right after I updated my phone to version 10.3.1 I noticed that my phone's battery life gets drained faster. I already turned off everything (location, background app refresh, etc) and still my battery's draining a lot more faster... This really ***** I have to charge my phone twice a day or more!! Apple kindly fix this BATTERY ISSUES!! Appreciate it. Thx!

Apr 10, 2017 11:23 AM in response to Lawrence Finch

I disagree. I went to the Apple Store a week ago ... none of my apps caused my battery draining issues. I was told by Apple u get a warning before u chose to download certain apps if they are unsafe. I have just a few basic apps on my iPhone 7 and I went and had them do 10.3.1 as new and it is not resolved... going back again next week one last time. Frankly I am sick of Apple and their updates and I have 7 devices. Don't plan on doing anymore updayes

With my battery drain on iPhone 7 you are incorrect, I factory reset the phone via iTunes.

Ran phone without any apps installed for 2 days.

10.2.1 and 10.3.1.

Still had this ridiculous battery drain and warmth that I didn't know why. Followed the troubleshooting guides via apple and still no go.

Battery according to apple support was perfect.

Sent phone back to Apple so they can look for themselves.

Same here. But when i noticed this issue for the 1st time (10.3.1 i guess),i wasnt near charger, so i go on and then i notice that my phone is 5 hours showing me 1% of battery. It took a few more hours to kill my phone. It kindly reminds me that issue about wrong battery % display. But still makes me freakin nervous whe i see those % dropin like 2pacs beats. If you know what i mean.

-Lets grab powerbank and tomorrow i see how long will this 1% last this time.

Hi all,

As suggested by one of the members in this forum, I did a back of my iPhone 7 using iTunes and I did a restore using iTunes.

Later after the phone was restored, I did a hard booting (by pressing the power button and low volume button ➖ simultaneously).

The battery drain issue appears to have been solved to a large extent (if not perfectly) and the battery power lasts longer now.

Please back up before you restore using iTunes. Do a hard booting and the problem should get resolved.

Do not try downgrading the iOS as Apple has changed the file format in the new 10.3 iOS version and your files may become corrupted. This is just a warning only.

Wish you all good luck in this method. No thanks to Apple as it did nothing so far even after receiving so many complaints both directly and through the user forum.

We have four iPhone 6s units - varying age (1 week old to 1+ year old) and varying storage (16GB to 128GB). After update, all four are suffering varying levels of battery drain. We have reinstalled, fresh install, shut down notifications/background refresh, etc. No luck. Just ridiculous how bad the 10.3 update is - really manifests as a safety item given the iPhone can no longer be trusted. I hope Apple fixes this ASAP.
