Apple TV turns on randomly after tvOS 10.2 update?

I have a 4th-gen Apple TV that had no issues prior to the tvOS 10.2 update. Now, the Apple TV will turn on randomly (and thereby also turning on the TV in the bedroom) throughout the day/night and shows an error message that says, "This AirPlay connection requires iOS 7.1 or later" and it goes on to list some other requirements. I am not attempting to use AirPlay at all when this happens. I have tried restarting the Apple TV, signing out and back in to iCloud and it still happens.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi cupertino_alert. I've found that an attempt to connect to Apple TV on port 5000 (UPnP) turns the device on. This is clearly incorrect and you should report it to Apple at this link https://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html. It's probably caused by a media player or server running on your network, and scanning for resources. So you might be able to stop if it you can find the device or program/app and make it stop.

I've found that one cause of these symptoms is an Android device running the Plex app. It performs a WiFi scan for AirPlay devices when opened, and when connected to or removed from power. This scan turns Apple TV on. Plex doesn't implement the current AirPlay protocol, so it triggers the Device Requirements message on the TV screen. The AirPlay scan can be disabled in the Plex System settings.

If there are no Android devices on your WiFi, you might look for Plex running on other devices, including computers.

I do have a Mac mini running Plex Media Server and I have Plex installed on my iPhone and my iPad. What I don't understand is that this has never been a problem and there hasn't been a Plex Media Server or Plex app update since March 16 and March 15, respectively. The iOS/macOS/tvOS/watchOS updates are the only new things.

So Plex doesn't seem to be the issue, since this wasn't an issue until the Apple updates last week.

I agree. tvOS 10.2 made Require Device Verification compulsory for AirPlay. This changes the protocol and has affected some 3rd party AirPlay implementations, including Plex on Android and Beamer on Macs. Please check the settings on your Plex programs and make sure the AirPlay scan is disabled. Alternatively, you can follow the recommendation on the Beamer website, which is to revert tvOS.

Please check the settings on your Plex programs and make sure they do not implement some sort of internal scan for AirPlay devices. If you can confirm they are not doing it, then you need to look for another program, running on some device on the network, that implements a 3rd party version of AirPlay. Is your Mac running Beamer, AirParrot, etc.?

This is a serious problem with Apple TV.

We have re-booted, disconnected power and reconnected, and closed all open apps.

Not only does Apple TV turn on by itself and power on the TV all day and night, if we are watching a conventional TV channel with a live sporting event or TV show, it switches from the TV channel to the Apple TV home screen.

At this time, the only solution seems to be disconnecting power from Apple TV until we want to use it.

I have same issue too.

I am investigating the cause applications or services, but I can not find it yet.

However, I noticed that Apple TV will restart when the network is reconnected.

On the Wifi access point, it seems that problems do not occur by making the following settings.

- Auto Channel Select. (In Japan, W53, W56 channels are required to be selected automatically.)

- Eco mode (A function that reduces the performance of the access point at a specified time.)

Please try it in your environment and share the results.

Thanks.
