Apple TV (4th gen.) won't turn off; light stays on

As of a couple days ago I noticed that when I go to put the ATV to sleep, the TV will turn off but the light on the unit flashes as if it's going off and then turns itself back on. If I turn on the TV manually, I can see that it appears as though the unit is asleep, however, the light is still on. It is solid and not blinking rapidly as if I were restarting it.

The only way it seems to get the ATV to remain off is if I hold down the Home button, press Sleep, and then immediately cover the IR sensor or point it away from the device once the TV and ATV. If I leave it pointed at both devices, the light turns off for about a second and then comes back up. It's as if the remote is sending a signal after it shuts down the units to turn only the ATV back on; like I was just pressing Play.

I have manually restarted the device by pressing Menu & Play/Pause several times. I have also unplugged the device completely for 10 seconds and plugged it back in. This is the original remote that controls the device and I don't believe any other BT devices are connected. Since ATV 4 auto-updates, I assume it has the latest build.

It seems that the 10.2 release was a few days ago. I assume this because the Apple support post was updated 5 days ago with information on 10.2. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Is there something I'm missing with the light staying on?

Thank you all! My issue started when I upgraded to a Samsung 4K QLED TV. (Both devices power off/sleep but then about a second later Apple TV light comes on but doesn’t display an image.) Disabled the Samsung “smart” remote for the Apple TV and all is well. HDMI-CEC is still enabled on both devices and the Apple TV remote successfully turns off the TV. Not sure if this is a Samsung issue with the remote or an Apple TV issue but I sure hope it gets fixed!

To disable the function on the remote, on the Samsung TV go to home, source, universal remote. Then select Apple TV and press Delete. Note: this will rename the input to Unknown. Simply go back to sources and under that input hit edit, change the name to Apple TV. Now all is back to the way it was except the universal remote is disabled for the Apple TV and the Apple TV sleeps normally!

CEC doesn't work that well in my experience. Well… I should say it depends on the implementation. On my LG OLED, it's terrible. I've tried numerous things, but the command works very sporadically. Sometimes the TV turns off, sometimes it doesn't. No pattern whatsoever. Funny enough, it works without fail on my old LG LCD.

I'd submit a ticket but it's LG, so I'm not gonna hold my breath.

I believe you mentioned that yours was randomly turning on after being put to sleep. That's not the same issue that I had originally posted about but good to hear that it was resolved. We don't have any NAS or other network devices. Nothing new, either.

What I did find to be another band-aid fix is putting both devices to sleep with the Home button. Once the TV is out and the ATV blinks and remains on, I just press and hold down the Home button twice to wake up the ATV and then select the Sleep option. When I put the ATV to sleep for the second time, it stays off. Definitely leads me to believe there is some issue with my LG's CEC signal.

This is not my experience. I am also having to aim the siri remote at my LG TV to turn it off. If I cover the IR it will not turn off the TV. In regards to this exact issue with the ATV light staying on, the only way I can make it work is to cover the IR sensor on the siri remote to turn off the ATV and then manually turn off the TV. It's a pain and was not an issue prior to 10.2.

It's great that you've figured that out. I don't know the exact technical sequence of events when you select "Sleep", but there's some combination of a signal that the Siri remote outputs and then the ATV's reply that causes this bug. If you cover the remote or remove the HDMI cable, the ATV goes to sleep properly. I'm also hoping for a quick fix. Not sure how often they put out ATV updates.

I thought we already established that it's not a 3rd party connection that's causing the issue since people who don't have a 3rd party link are also experiencing the issue…

Further, we don't know whether the device is actually being woken or whether the light is simply just on while the device remains asleep. The evidence thus far is pointing to the latter.

If a 3rd party device was waking it, the current symptoms would be different in that you would see a visual UI on the screen.

Hi tennisproha. I don't believe Apple software causes this wakeup. 3rd-party software, running on Android (Plex), Apple computers (Stremio), and NAS servers (Twonky Media Server), does cause this wakeup. A random connection to port 7000 (AirPlay) causes an on-screen message, as you observe. However, connection to port 5000 (AirTunes) wakes Apple TV without a message. Apple software indentifies these services using Bonjour, which does not wake Apple TV. Apple TV still sleeps normally, with no light, in the absence of these disturbances.

I don't have anything connected to my Apple TVs. Only my iPhone accesses the device via AirPlay. There are no 3rd party devices connected to my network. I even have an Airport. So I have a complete Apple ecosystem yet the problem still persists on my Apple TV.

In fact, I have 2 Apple TVs. One has automatically updated to 10.2 but the other one hasn't yet. Not surprisingly, the one that hasn't updated yet behaves like before, but the one that has updated exhibits the light issue. When they are both off (sleep), they both show up as AirPlay devices on my iPhone in Control Center, as they've done in the past.

Sleep implies sleep like how an iPhone sleeps. It's not really ever off. So the question is whether this update is forcing the Apple TV to continually do something in the background that it didn't do prior to this iOS update, or whether it's simply a false light that just shows on while the device actually remains asleep.

I've had this issue since the last OS update, I raised a case with support, but was just told to flash the device. After reading this I turned off a Twonky Media server that I had on a NAS but had not used in ages and experimented. This has 'fixed' things, in so far as if it is OFF then the ATV will not turn on and if it is ON then after a couple of mins of sleep the ATV restarted itself. This is a change in behaviour as my older devices (OS-wise) certainly do not exhibit this. I suppose that all the PnP providers could update to change their behaviour, but I would really class this as a bug in the update, since no ATV I have had since the first gen failed to sleep properly.

My guess is that others have something on their networks that try to wake up their ATVs and the only way to sort it out would be to do what I did and disconnect devices one at a time and find the culprit, in my case this was only the NAS and then Twonky itself as a control within it and took an hour, but for others it might mean a lot of hassle.

In our case, we have no NAS set up in our environment. There are only two things I can recall that have changed within our "network" in the last couple of weeks and that is: the addition of a wemo smart plug and the attachment of an external HD to our iMac for Time Machine. I've turned off the smart plug and no change with the ATV. I guess I can try disconnecting our old external but it's connected directly to our iMac. It's not plugged into our router's USB.

Although, having just gone through our network setup in my head, a couple months ago I did add our HP DeskJet to the USB in our router for air printing. Perhaps that's got a persistent broadcast that's affecting the ATV. I'll have to test that out by disconnecting it from the router.

As @tennisproha mentioned, we don't really know what's going on when the light is on. It appears to be asleep as there is no signal to the TV, but who knows what the light signifies after this 10.2 update. At this point I'd prefer to know that over what devices are causing the issue. Thanks for the input.

In my case, I just waited with the TV until it started. I played with the NAS and then disabling/enabling the Twonky Media server. This nailed the issue for me. I would really try to nail down the cause. Perhaps simply disconnecting everything and watching the device without any networking at all (including wifi) would be a good start, at least you could see if it was the device itself or part of the environment. This in and of itself should not take too much time. Mine has now been behaving for 24 hours.

Hello All,

Just to report that after today's update: May 15th, the problem is still there. You put your TV to sleep and it comes to wake up by itself, also this reproduces on not connecting anymore via CEC with the TV (in my case Samsung, although changing the volume with the Siri remote works).

So.. looks like the Devs are still too busy to hear us eh?

D.

ps. Yes, I did submit the bug to the devs.
