"Blocked Plug-In" when opening pdf from Safari

I have installed OSx 10.12.4 on two machines and since then I cannot open any pdf from a link in an email. I get the "Blocked Plug-In" message. I'm using Safari web browser and gmail via the browser.

Before installing 10.12.4 on my second machine I confirmed I did not have an issue then after installing I had the issue so I'm assuming it is linked with this latest OSx update?

Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.4), Safari, gmail via browser

Same problem here. I played with the plugin settings but to no avail. Problem persists with my banks website when I try and click on a statement link, as well as other sites I go frequently that I know are secure. Really makes safari unusable. Had to download Chrome and use that just to download my bank statements.

When trying to look at the PDF from a bank's website, the option to right click did not appear, so that solution did not work. For what it's worth, I found a workaround that worked for me. When looking at Safari Preferences -> Security -> Plug-in Settings, the settings for Adobe Reader (v 10.1.16 in my case) I noticed a message in the window claiming that "Adobe Reader does not support the highest level of security for Safari plug-ins". So I figured that for some reason, Safari has decided that Adobe Reader was not desirable, so I simply clicked to remove the checkmark on the right of the Adobe Reader plugin for reading PDF files. In this way, I figured that Safari would revert to the default PDF reader that OS X is using, namely Preview. I went back to the website and lo and behold, I was able to see the PDFs. I tested and this worked on PDF files in other sites, even just links to PDF files that were not embedded in another webpage. While I would rather keep on using Adobe Reader to see the PDF files directly, at least now I can see them. And I can also right click (or click on the appropriate icon) to download the PDF file to the desktop and then open it in Acrobat when I need to. Not ideal, but a workaround.

Sorry to say it hasn't helped for me, and "Blocked plug-in" is not solved by a long shot. I'm facing this problem with WhatsApp web pdf files and it shows this same "Blocked Plug-in" no right click, no using down arrow , no using "Download" is helping, Safari 10.1.1 (12603.2.4) on Sierra 10.12.5. Extremely annoying with no help. Have to use iPhone to view them.

Other PDFs cause no problem, never have, gmail and other PDF-"books" open just fine after download.

Here's a very easy fix I found on another website ("Ask Different"), which worked perfectly for me:

"Although the plugin is blocked, you can still use Command-S (or File > Save As) as well as File > Export as PDF to save the file to a folder."

It had never occurred to me that I could do anything with a "blocked" file, but this is the simplest and most effective solution I have seen.

Thanks a lot Egtverchi, this solution actually worked for me, both suggestions, with the blocked plugin page/tab open Cmd-S, save as, and Export as worked. Not a perfect solution, but now I don't have to use other browsers.

WhatsApp say it has nothing do with them, although their site is the only one I facing this problem with.

A number of sites have this problem - I encountered it on a website for professionals in my own field. It's not just WhatsApp, but I suspect WhatsApp is using some program which Apple deems insufficiently secure, and any site using that program gets blocked. I just wish that, instead of telling me that I have some blocked plug-in or other, they would actually tell me which one it is!

I have this same issue. Right-clicking and choosing to open it in a new tab gives me another error:

"Before viewing PDF documents in this browser you must launch Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and accept the End User License Agreement, then Quit and relaunch the browser."

However, right-clicking and choosing to Download Linked File was an easy alternative solution.

Hi,

You can simply use your two fingers to click the trackpad.

Yes! It works that way.

or

If the two-finger right-click methods feel awkward to you, you can assign the bottom-left corner as a right-click zone in System Preferences. Launch System Preferences from the Apple menu and choose Trackpad. Next, click the Point & Click menu item at the top and you'll see a Secondary click item. By default, it's set up to click with two fingers, but you can set it to click in the bottom-right corner.

Thank you Egtverchi. Your solution worked perfectly for me (macOS Sierra 10.12.6). In Safari I used File > Export as PDF when on the greyed out page showing the blocked plug-in message. I had previously tried all other methods suggested here without success, and had reverted to downloading the troublesome PDF (from a Government website) using my iPhone. Thanks again for sharing the fix.

Hi sage seeker. See the reply I posted to Egtverchi today regarding a solution that worked for me. Here's a copy of my post:

You can also use File > Save As (Command > S) while on the greyed out page showing the message. Both methods will save the file as a PDF to your Desktop (or designated location).

Hope this solves it for you, as it did for me!
