"Blocked Plug-In" when opening pdf from Safari

I have installed OSx 10.12.4 on two machines and since then I cannot open any pdf from a link in an email. I get the "Blocked Plug-In" message. I'm using Safari web browser and gmail via the browser.

Before installing 10.12.4 on my second machine I confirmed I did not have an issue then after installing I had the issue so I'm assuming it is linked with this latest OSx update?

Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.4), Safari, gmail via browser

Same problem here. I played with the plugin settings but to no avail. Problem persists with my banks website when I try and click on a statement link, as well as other sites I go frequently that I know are secure. Really makes safari unusable. Had to download Chrome and use that just to download my bank statements.

As of writing this 350+ people have this issue - please report it to Apple:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html

We're using OSX 10.11.6 Safari version 10.1.1 and when trying to view a pdf I get the blank black screen with "Blocked Plug In" message in the middle of the page.

I have disabled all plug ins and all extensions that have anything to do with downloading / viewing.

I've never used Adobe reader or any pdf viewer as a Safari extension.

Safari giving a 'plug-in' error when there is none installed is false!

Right click doesn't work on the website I need to access today, neither does the 'reader' trick.

Apple need to lift their game - pdfs are a staple for us as a business.

Thankfully Firefox works, though we try to avoid that to keep everything as secure as possible (hence the 'no Adobe policy'!).

Same for me. Have just reported this bug as suggested by @bonzabuy.

(My alternative browser is Epic browser, which is based on Chrome, but doesn't allow Google or other trackers to track my browsing history.)

TommyBlackdog thanks for clarifying that this was not just me.

As one of the replies noted it works fine in Chrome but for some reason, Apple who generally provides excellent support for PDF content directly within browser tabs or via Preview won't allow the display of PDF content within a Safari tab now.

Have not heard that there are security issues with PDF files but suspect this may be why Apple is now blocking.

The silly thing is all they are doing is sending people to use other browsers.

Hopefully there'll be a Safari update to sort this out soon since some of the sites I need to use don't let you right-click to download the PDF or to open it in a separate tab.

This worked for men on one of the links I get from a federal website. As of this morning, this method no longer works. Right clicking and opening the link ia new window now results in a black window. Oh this is becoming so much fun! I guess I'll have to depend on third party browsers until the coders at apple wake up. Security is good, but going over the top has it's realistic challenges.

On Imac late 2011, Upgraded from Mavericks to Sierra 10.12.4 includes safari 10.1.( 2 weeks ago)

When I am on a particular secure government web site, to read a message I click on a link (which is a HTML file) this in turn downloads a PDF to my download folder.

When I select the link I get a blocked pugin message.

Action I have taken: Cleared cache and history, Disabled plugins and loaded only the java which is required to run that web site. Reset preferences in safri security, quit and restated safri after each change. Plus disabled extensions.

I have tried to download a pdf attachment without any problems but the web site in particular does not interpret the html file to load or download the files I need to use. This is a secure message facility which contains personal information, hence the securit of not placing PDF files directly on the web page.

I have eliminated other browsers ans the issue onluy occurs on safari. At my witz end. Looks like I am not th eonly one experiencing this problem, wish I'd never upgraded to sierra now

JohnFromQld it's not a Sierra issue per se from my experience, just after the latest update. I get PDF files from a government site as well and the links work fine in Chrome and Firefox - used to be no issue in Safari under Sierra but with the latest update Apple appears to have "broken" things. I put broken in quotes since I have read that there were some security issues with PDF files and so Apple may view that they are being extra secure. A number of people in this thread, myself included, view that they have simply made Safari less appealing and so I am now using Chrome more.

Several replies mention difficulty with Blocked Plug-in message on dark screen at bank sites. I just experienced this. It happened when I clicked on an email link from my bank to access my latest statement. In the past, I always logged on from the bank's website, so I tried going that route. It worked. I had no difficulty once I logged in via the standard website; it was only when I logged in via the email link that I encountered the blocked plug-in. So if anyone is trying to access a website via an email link, obviously, recommendation is to ignore that option and go to the URL for the website itself to login. Worked for me.

I had the same problem and found the solution, by accident. When you click on the file and get the black page with the Plugin Blocked error. Put your cursor in the URL address bar and suddenly you will see a Plus sign with a circle around it show up on the far left inside the URL bar. This Plus sign will only appear while the cursor is in the URL address bar. Click on the Plus sign and the file will be added to your Reading List and then you will be able to view it.

Hope this helps!
