Anyone able to open 4k 10-bit files from the Panasonic GH5? Final Cut, Quicktime, Premiere... none seem to support it. 4k 8-bit and other formats open fine. They're all H264 .MOV files. Panasonic didn't have an answer. Is it just not supported my Apple yet?

Awesome. So the correct statement is that Finder will preview 8-bit Long GOP H.264 files, 10-bit ProRes files, but not 10-bit Long GOP H.264 files. I can live with that! Thanks. 🙂
ProRes is 10-bit. It’s also an I-frame codec, while H.264 is a GOP structure that has to be decoded.
I am able to open in FCPX 10.2.3 Panasonic GH5 files shot at 3840x2160 25p 422/10bit/LongGOP. I am using an iMac 5K mid 2015 3.3 GHz with 24 GB of memory. There is no problem editing the files in FCPX. The same files will not open in Quicktime Player 10.4.
10 bit GH5 footage actually works fine in FCPX for me. It does play very slowly, but optimising fixes this (it creates Pro Res in the background). The thing I'd like is for QuickTime Player in FINDER to support these files. The last Mac OS update seemed to suggest that this had been addressed but there is no difference sadly.
I can't preview 10-bit files from my GH5 in Finder, but I can preview ProRes 422 files in Finder, which I understand to be a 10-bit format (which this post corroborates). Am I wrong about ProRes?
Will 10 bit be supported in the future?If so, will it be software update, hardware upgrade or both?
Final cut pro question: If it does not support 10bit shouldn't it down sample to 8bit? I've asked many apple employees at the store and claimed it should as far as they know.
Yes I'd also like to know when Quicktime will support 10 bit files from the Panasonic GH5. FCP X seems to support them although playback is very slow. Its ok once the file has been transcoded or converted to proxy.
Many people in the GH5 community (an extremely popular camera) are asking about compatibility of this format and a clear answer from Apple on Quicktime / FCPX compatibility would be very welcome. Adobe have just announced that a June update will see Premiere with full compatibility with 10 bit files. Davinci Resolve's latest version 14 seems to be compatible (although its unstable and in beta still).
Please Apple - let us know what's happening here.
I'm experiencing this problem too with FCPX on MacBook pro and GH5 files 10 bit 422.
For now I use a workaround using EDITREADY2 software to change the files to Apple prores. It works but it is a pain to have to do this. I hope apple does something soon about this.

Yep importing GH5 10 bit files works fine. It plays back stuttery, until it optimises - then it runs very well. I eventually output the file to whatever is needed - H264 for the web, Pro-Res for broadcast etc.
May I ask how you did this DS? Every time I've tried to download 10-bit footage from the GH5 to my iMac, I get a message. Not trying to download it with QT, just a straight download from camera to computer.
