iTunes could not connect to this iPad. The value is missing.

For some reason, my wife's iPad has become disabled. When I connect via USB, I get a dialog asking if I want to allow the Mac to access the iPad. When I click yes, I get

"iTunes could not connect to this iPad. The value is missing."

I've tried rebooting the iPad, but I get the same sequence of messages.

Any ideas on what to do? Thanks.

You'll want to plug the iPad in first to you computer, and then press the home button and power button at the same time until the screen goes black. 2 seconds after the screen goes black, let go of the power button, but keep holding the home button until iTunes recognizes the iPad in recovery mode. This is called DFU mode. Unfortunately if the iPad is disabled, a complete restore is the only option. I hope it's backed up somewhere.
