Can I import old version project files into Final Cut Pro X?

I am an intern at a music conservatory and I make videos and all kinds of media for them. Yesterday we wanted to get Photoshop on my computer but in order to do this we had to update the iOS version. It now runs Sierra. Only downside that had was that Final Cut Pro would no longer operate before it was updated too so I asked IT to update it for me while I was gone. They did but I think they did not do it correctly because my Library has completely vanished. I managed to recreate the library and import all my files but I can't get my old project files opened. They are stored as files called "CurrentVersion.fcpproject" in My Documents. FCP refuses to open the files.

Is there any way I can retrieve these old project files and get them to work in the new FCP?

I have downloaded the FCPX 10.2.3 trial linked by Tom Wolsky. When I try to run that trial I get this error:

I have six years worth of material developed on the older version of FCPX. If it can't be used just because the program is updated... I don't know... I guess I will just go out of business. Any help would go a long way toward saving my life.

All you need is to install an appropriate version of the OS on a separate drive and keep it around in case of need.

In fact, since you actually own FCP X, I suggest you install Yosemite (10.10).

Why Yosemite? Because the latest version that works in that OS is 10.2.3. So if you were to try and download FCP X on Yosemite, you'd get a warning that the current version is not compatible, and the chance to download 10.2.3.

Just as long as you have a mac where you once had Yosemite, you should be able to download on that mac.

Once you have the installer, you can use it in any compatible mac.

Once the old version events and projects are updated to the new library version, nothing in the old folders, including the media is used. Once you confirm the new library is functioning correctly, all those folders, including the media can be discarded.

Read about the updates to the application, not only updating to the library system, as the application has changed significantly since 2013, when the 10.0 series was last used.

Your older version is one of the 10.0.* versions.

These used a different media management system where stuff needed to be placed in specific folders Final Cut Projects and Final Cut Events.

Up until 10.2.3 version of FCP X, the program could update that old material.

For this reason, there is still a trial 10.2.3 version available. You need to download and use it to update the old stuff and create libraries for it. Judt do File->Update Projects and Events. Select the volume containing those folders (not the folders themselves).

Then open the resulting libraries in your new 10.3.3 version.

Alright that sounds like it'll work then. One last thing, I can not find my library anywhere. Not even as file. I have no clue where it was saved since I did not create it. When I started working here it was already there. Will those "CurrentVersion.fcpproject" files do the job to re-import the timeline sequences or do I really need the library it was in as well?
