When my Airpods are connected to the iPhone and I make/receive a call, I'm getting no audio, despite the fact that the Airpods are clearly selected as the audio output.
If I switch to iPhone sound, I get the audio through the iPhone earpiece. If I instead end the call, all other audio resumes in the Airpods.
Is this a known problem/limitation of the Airpods? Have I missed something while setting them up?

It's the Tile app, open it up, hit settings, turn off bluetooth in the Tile app... AirPods will begin working again normally, immediately.
There is also a setting in Tile to limit bluetooth connections. This seems to resolve the issue.
After installing iOS12, I had a few quirks with my apple watch, so I re-paired it to my phone. After that, my Airpods would not make a sound when on a phone call. I tried a few things but the easy fix was obvious. RESET NETWORK SETTINGS. After i did that, it seemed to fix all the issues.
Does the problem go away if you put the Apple Watch into Airplane mode?
