I just purchased a 2016 macbook pro non-touch bar version from an online retailer.
How can i check if it is a refurbished model?
What are some of the other things i should check before the return period?
battery health shows 1 charge cycle.

They are not Apple authorized retailers, so your Mac is not new, Was it cheaper than normal?
Do they appear on Apples Authorized Dealer list?
First, they're called "Resellers," not "Dealers." And yes, they are on the "list.
Guess I looked in the wrong place, it still doesn't sound new though.
I agree, something's not right, but the OP's call to Apple (and B&H?) should take care of the matter.
I think I was looking at the Apple Corporate Reseller list before, so it makes sense now. And a call should work.
Any update? Did you return your MBP?
