All my text messages disappeared all of a sudden.
Four people have texted me since and in search I can find the text of their old messages but cannot open them but no other contacts messages.
Phone is on 10.2.1
iPhone 5, iOS 10.2.1
I had this problem today on my iPhone 6S running iOS 11.2.2. I had left my device off overnight, on charge. When powering back on this morning my Touch ID fingerprints and all my messages were gone. A search did not refresh the messages. Turning the phone off and on again did not refresh them. After reading this thread I was inspired to try the following:
I doubt that all steps were required, but it solved the issue and all of messages and touch ID are back to where they were.

Seems illogical that storage should do that! I use videos for work purposes. Apple need more storage solution!!!
I had the same problem after an update to 11.0.2. Turned off my phone and then back on. All the messages appeared.

This worked. No clue why, but they are all back!
Update:
It worked, but it only went back a month and then the next thing I knew they (the month that came back) were gone again. 😑
This is not the case I just noticed this missing text today and I currently have 64 GB of free space.
I feel violated like something was stolen. Why doesn’t apple respond to this on it site?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but “push “search”l where? I have a 6s Plus and just lost all of my messages. I’d like to try your fix, i just know where to push search.
Open messages, swipe down to see the search field, then type anything. If nothing happens, you have a bigger problem than I did.
I just had the same problem so closed all open pages, forced quit, switched on again and , hey presto, all messages have returned.
Pull down on your messages after u click it and a search bar will appear at the top over your messages or over where they were.
