It would help if you'd included the error message.

If you have difficulty downloading the current iTunes installer file try; unticking the "Keep me up to date..." box, clearing your browser's cache, changing pop-up blocker settings, right-clicking or ctrl-clicking the download button, using an alternate browser, using the direct links from here, or download the installer on another computer and transfer to yours with a USB drive. Another user also mentioned pausing and resuming the download to help it complete as a possible workaround for network timeout issues. It may also help to temporarily disable AV software.

Once you've downloaded the setup file right-click on it and use the Run as administrator option.

See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates if you have any further trouble with the installation.

See the last few paragraphs of Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash.

Then it tells me the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.

Run the installer as the administrator, or if you are using a machine in a business environment seek the assistance of the IT department. On my network, for example, we have a policy that prevents software running inside temporary folders, which can break some software update utilities. In such cases I have to temporarily disable the policy, or run the standalone installation package instead.

That error is usually caused by an existing Apple Software Update component (or perhaps the memory of one) that won't remove itself when asked. Did you remove all of the indicated components and reboot before trying to reinstall? Did you run the Microsoft fixit tool? Have you tried using the method in the Install missing components section? If ASU cannot be replaced then if needs be it can be ignored and all of the other components installed manually.

Note that you probably don't need QuickTime any more.

I am having the same problem - I am running as Administrator but its telling me that itunes library itl* cannot be read because it was created by a new version of itunes. This is so confusing - is there any easy understandable instructions for "dummies" . Then it tells me the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation. This has only happened since I mistakenly upgraded to Windows 10 and wish like **** I had never touched this version - its a shocker. Any help greatfully appreciated...

I ran it as administrator and got the same error message I got before running it as an administrator. here is the message:

An error occurred while attempting to create the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support

Prior to this issue Windows 10 was reloaded on my desktop and all of the updates done. The initial error I got told me to uninstall iTunes then reinstall it. I get this message now every time I try to download iTunes.

After many prompts from Apple, I relented and upgraded iTunes to the 'latest' and it has broken my iTunes now.

I have tried almost all of the above and what has been mentioned on the install page, de-installing all Apple software...

I have tried this multiple times over the last few weeks, where I removed all Apple software and still cannot install and the Setup program ends up with the same errors. Fresh downloads, I tried the Run as Adminstrator on a few occasions with no change. I have not had a message about any access issue or concerns with previous versions etc.

To Apple: Do you have a way of providing a link to a version of iTunes that still works - like about 6-12m previous?
Have you tried collaborating with your friends at Microsoft to get this working?
Apart from losing my access to media through iTunes, I cannot backup or maintain my iPad and iPhones while this software is broken. Is there any way this can be done while iTunes is broken?

BTW turingtest2 I noticed that the error message seems to infer that other Apple software was missing, which could be because I was advised by Help articles to remove all Apple Products. Given that it seemed to be concerned about missing products, I started to re-install Bonjour (Successful), QT (Successful), then iCloud (Unsuccessful, with the same error as iTunes).

Hi again,

I have used the Microsft fixit tool and this removed all Apple installed products successfully (one by one with me selecting them of course). I suspect that the Mobile Device support and Apply Update items might have been the culprits. Rebooted my Windows 10 machine. Re-ran the iTunes install as Administrator and it seemed to be happy, having installed about 5+ components without breaking.

Thanks so much for this info. 🙂
