Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

I came upon this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7995345?page=1) after I too experienced crushing and cracking damage of the logo baffle from something which dropped, unseen, into the “jaws” of the screen-hinging area of my new, 13-inch, 2018 MacBook Air.

Clearly, this is a defect in “materials and workmanship” which subject the MBs to easy accidental damage and, therefore should be covered by the warranty.

  • The material in question is the fragile, glass-like logo baffle which can easily crack and shatter given enough local pressure. Materials with such characteristics should never be used in areas subject to vice-like pressures or, for that matter, normal pressures encountered in screen cleaning. Future designs should mitigate such vice-like mechanics in cover/screen hinging.

  • The workmanship in question is the design of the screen/body hinging, where the space between the screen (and logo baffle ) diminishes as the screen/cover is closed, trapping and crushing anything which has fallen, unnoticed, into the dark, yawning gap, damaging the logo baffle and, possibly, the display screen, too.

As with defective airbags, the manufacturer, i.e., Apple, should be responsible for:

  • Issuing a product warning to all owners of relevant MacBook models regarding this accidental damage vulnerability and measures to take to mitigate such damage*;
  • Developing and offering free replacement of the defective part, one which would not be easily subjected to such damage; and
  • Repairing, at no charge, damaged logo baffles and display screens which have already occurred.

___

*I believe most of us would never have experienced damage if Apple had alerted us to the possibilities of such. We would then have attended to and avoided debris which might easily or otherwise, fall between the cracks with such costly consequences.

I just stumbled onto this thread as I tried to explain the same strange phenomenon with my 13” 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. Just last week, I was cleaning the screen - gentle wipes with a soft cloth. There was no significant pressure applied. And suddenly the screen cracked in the same area. I have since dispatched it Apple, with the expectation that it will be covered under my Apple Care plan. I have been a Mac user since 2003, and have owned Apple laptops since that time. This has never happened with any previous generation PowerBook or MacBook. This is a first. The fragility surprised me, and troubles me since I travel overseas frequently. User uploaded file

Ughh!!! So angry at Apple! This is my very first Apple Computer. I bought a new (at the time) Macbook Pro 15 inch, 16GB RAM, 1GB SSD, 4GB video memory and all the latest specs on my first laptop. I paid about $3500 for this laptop. I bought it in January of 2017, December 2017 (so, almost one year) I noticed a crack on the bottom right of my screen I have no idea where it came from but assumed it was my fault.

Took it to MacMedics, which is an Apple authorized retailer that fixes Apple products. They said I MIGHT have to only pay a $99 deductible BUT it happened that I only had AppleCare (not AppleCarePlus). AppleCare+ was not available for any Apple products that was sold before June 2017. So, I bought my computer 6 months too early and there was no way to get coverage under AppleCare+ so, I'd have to pay the full cost for a screen replacement. Instead of only $99 for the deductible, ugh!!!

I paid nearly $680 to have the computer screen repair, now, 2 months after that repair; I noticed a small crack on the screen, again!

So I paid $3500 for it new, paid $680 for the first repair, now, I’m trying to figure out, do I just list it on ebay as a crack screen or do I paid another $680 for the repair? If I do the second repair, I’d now have spent $4,860 BEFORE all the money I’ve spent on accessories.

DO NOT BUY THIS NOTEBOOK IF YOU’RE A STUDENT. I think I know exactly what caused it, I had a 2 pieces of paper closed inside the macbook pro and I think the staple did it when the screen was closed. ****, I’ve done this with so many windows computers for years and never had an issue. Now, I bought this fragile piece of crap and this is what happens. Never again! I take some blame but they should make a less fragile item, aside from thoughtless sticking the paper in there, I’ve taken great care of the computer. Smh!

I have never heard of a display spontaneously breaking. I suspect that something accidentally caused it to break. Once again, I'm sorry to hear that you have this problem. Maybe take it to an Apple store for assessment for possible cause of the breakage. If they determine the damage was cause by faulty material the repair will likely be covered by warranty. There is nothing we users can do about the damage or the warranty coverage.

I bought a new macbook pro in April and about 3 weeks in it slid very gently from a low sofa onto a carpeted floor. The screen broke. It cost me £700 to have it fixed. Macbook is now so fragile I am very nervous of traveling with it, which is what a notebook is supposed to be for! I dont think I will buy Apple again, after 15 years, since Steve Jobs went its been going downhill all the way...

The above posts appear to show a crack beginning from the edge of the screen - my screen crack spontaneously appeared a little further up from the bottom after 20 days of use.

I was using it all morning for work, I was working remotely so it did not leave my desk. When I returned back from lunch and woke the MacBook from sleep, the following crack was showing and I took a photo immediately. (btw I live alone)

Macbook Pro Screen Issue - Google Photos

Apple said they have never seen this issue, that it was impossible for this kind of damage unless the screen had been hit or dropped and charged me almost £500 to repair it which I had no choice but to cough up.

I presume acknowledging such a fault would open the flood gates to complaints and there is no good way to discern between genuine issues and accidental damage.

Needless to say, I am not happy at all. There are no visible marks anywhere else on the mac, no sign of impact.

Once I picked the MacBook up from repair, the lid made a cracking noise when it opened and closed and a usb-c port loses connection if the cable is lifted gently. 😟

Similar thing just happened to me, my screen didn't crack but the LCD underneath did and it destroyed the whole screen. Not much physical on the glass or places just maybe a little bump. I had to pay the 680, unfortunately. 3 weeks prior they had to replace my screen because it was making random popping noises and it had come loose and making knocking noises if it was moved around. But seriously questioning the quality of apple products for some time now. They are on a gradual decline. I paid 2600 for a fragile device. They should revert their focus back on the quality of their products.User uploaded file

Completely my fault (I put paperwork between the screen and keyboard and closed), I too have a crack on the edge of the black bit of "MacBook Pro".

Not a great solution for something so expensive, but as it's not interfering with the screen itself I'd prefer to just cover it up but I don't know what to search for? Anyone know what to call it? Like a screen decal (decal being those silhouette stickers on the back) or something?

Thanks in advance.
