Cracked screen MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

Devastated to say that my relatively new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar has a cracked display/LCD at the bottom on the screen. I'm not particularly rough with my MacBook and presumably this occurred due to closing the screen with something between the keys and the screen. I recall the moment the crack appeared, so this would have been a dust speck. Although I have AppleCare, the cost of repair is $680, since this is "accidental damage" and "out of warranty"

The new machine seems much more fragile than my older MacBook Pro's which are still going strong 5 years in!

Have others had problems with a fragile displays?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), null

I just opened my MacBook pro 13in with TouchBar and noticed a small crack on the side of the bar under the display that says "MacBook Pro".. Nothing I did could have caused. It seemed to have just come out of nowhere..

If only the lower glass bezel (not the functional part of the display) is cracked, users have used a number of unauthorized work-arounds.

apply one thickness of black tape, such as vinyl electrical tape. This holds fragments in place and reduces further cracking.

purchase and install an aftermarket metal bezel, not a genuine Apple part, but seems to work. NB>> such a repair is VERY complicated and could ruin the function of your MacBook Pro. Do not undertake unless you are experienced in such repairs.

Same issue with my computer (2016 MBP touch bar 13"). Closed the screen in a normal fashion and the glass cracked at the bottom bezel in the exact same location as all these other complaints. The screen is VERY fragile and does not withstand daily use. I always transport it in a rigid hardshell case very carefully. Taken to the genius bar in uk - £469.20 repair bill. The fact that daily use is enough to physically destroy the product creates a very unacceptable situation where 'accidental damage' is attributed to be the cause. This is not 'accidental damage' - it is clear failure of an unacceptably weak component combined with a design that produces severe pressure on the glass during normal use. The multiple cases of the same issue spontaneously occurring are testament to that.

"I will never accept that the fragility and damages to it are our responsibility."

Accepting whether or not it's your responsibility is not going to get Apple to pay for the repair. You'd have to show proof that the product is flawed. If not then the responsibility is for sure on the consumer.

I should add that in my case the rest of the display functioned normally for some months after the crack appeared. It then failed suddenly whilst sitting on the desk one day mid use.. lines all over the display, flickering, display showing significant delay/hangs/shadows of old content. I thought that maybe a connection was loose or an internal component had failed, but the genius tech was insistent it related to the glass display defect near the hinge.

As others have commented - even after I've paid for the repair I've lost a lot of faith in the product and it's dented the pride/enjoyment factor knowing that the repaired device could also suddenly fail spontaneously due to its inherently fragile construction and design. At any time i can suddenly have a useless laptop, lost day at the apple store, and a £450 repair bill despite excellent care of the device. Not good enough really given the £1700 price tag. I'd happily accept a bulkier hinge construction that didn't catastrophically fail out of the blue.

"Luckily I haven't even had this computer for more than a year, so it's covered, but it still makes me furious that it cracks! "

It's not covered under the standard warranty. It doesn't matter whether or not you think you didn't crack it. When you present Apple with a cracked screen the repair expense is on you. It's only covered under the additionally purchased AppleCare Plus. With AppleCare Plus you would still need to pay a deductible.

Hey dude how do you know some of these laptops didn't ship from the factory with microscopic cracks in the glass and that subsequent normal usage caused these cracks to propagate, not sure if you're an expert in manufacturing but if not ask an expert if that might be a possibility ?

Hate to point out the obvious here but the fact that yours hasn't cracked is no evidence that none of the other shipped laptops don't have defects of some sort that eventually cause the glass to crack under normal usage.

What's your theory on the keyboard problem, user error too ?

Cracks in glassy substances cause optical imperfections that are readily detected by the kind of inspections the display manufacturers do in their factory, and Apple like does during or right before assembly.

Nice try, but not a solution.

Apple will not engage in discussions about whether you did or did not subject your computer to abuse. They simply say, "this is not a defect in materials or workmanship."

I also experienced something similar today! Although my model is the MacBook Air 2018. When I opened my laptop there is an internal crack. I did not drop the laptop nor did I have anything stuck in between the keyboard and the screen. Although my laptop is under warranty (I just got it Jan 22, 2019) it is not covered by the warranty because it is "ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE". I am trying to argue that the screen itself just cracked by itself which can be due to the material being too fragile. Feeling so frustrated by this! I am willing to pay for the repairs if I dropped it and it is my fault, but I take care of my devices and this crack was caused by normal handling!!

Well that's a non-factual conclusion on your part. You'd have to prove that. So unless it was cracked right out of the box (at that point you'd have to bring to the Apple genius for inspection ASAP) when you present a cracked screen or any physical damage to Apple the repair will be at the financial responsibility of the owner, unless you had AppleCare Plus which covers the repair less the deductible.

" I am willing to pay for the repairs if I dropped it and it is my fault, but I take care of my devices and this crack was caused by normal handling!! "

Since you said it was caused by "normal handling" then the screen did not crack itself like you said earlier. At this point if you're not willing to pay for the repair you could place a piece of electrical tape across the crack to prevent it from spreading.

The MacBook Pro is a lightweight, portable computer that runs on batteries. Being portable, it can easily be subjected to multi-G forces daily, just by being moved about in a completely ordinary way. This is extremely stressful to electro-mechanical equipment. I would never even think about NOT purchasing the extended warranty coverage for such a portable device.

The only way to pursue relief for your assertion is to have a court of competent jurisdiction declare that the screen is too fragile for its intended use. But since Your agreement with Apple disclaims suitability for any particular use, that will be a very long and expensive fight that you are unlikely to win.

Two and a half years later, and I had the same thing happen to me with my MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina. I didn't even realize what the problem was. You know, the keyboards on this machine have an inherent problem. I had an appointment to take my computer in to have the keyboard replaced under Apple Care for the second time... and I showed the guy at the Apple Genius Bar when dropping it off that my machine had overheated regularly enough to cause the bottom of the screen to melt. He informed me, "No, The screen is cracked, and it is 'accidental damage' and AppleCare will not cover it.

My first Apple Computer was a MacPlus from 1983. It had an external hard drive. I have never owned anything but Macs all my life. Today for the first time, I was angered that I ever spent a dime on anything Apple. I did nothing to crack this screen. My computer is in pristine condition. Apple sucks for not covering their faulty-produced work product. I wish Steve Jobs were still alive. The company is not the same anymore. They lost a customer today. And I'm sure they don't care.
