2GB data usage from System/Time & Location?

Hey folks, I need some help with this. I have an iPhone 6s Plus, and it seems to have an excessive usage coming from System / Time & Location. The screen captured below show 2.1GB of System - Time & Location data usage with the last statistics reset from 4/13/17, which is pretty ridiculous given that it's 1GB per month! Another phone is on the same family plan, and that one shows 170MB with the same last reset date. Also, I have another AT&T phone for work, and its last reset was 7/5/2016, and Time & System is only showing 195MB.

Can anyone offer a hint at what's causing this usage? I thought this is the basic stuff used by the network to track the phone and sync time?

I had the same problem - when I drove between Home and work, Time & Location was using almost a megabyte per minute. Tried various changes in settings that didn’t help. Finally I went to Privacy > Location Services and set various apps to while-using or never (pay special attention to the ones with a purple or gray arrow because it means they’ve used Location data recently) Then I drilled into System Services on that page and turned off location-based alerts, ads, and suggestions, as well as share my location and popular near me. Time & Location cellular data usage for a drive to work dropped from 25 MB to 0.1 MB. I haven’t tried to track down which change(s) had the most impact, but the changes haven’t caused any problems so far, so I’m not very motivated - just happy not to be wasting money on data that does me no good

I had the same issue, hardly ever using any data then all of a sudden using 100MB driving to work especially when connected to CarPlay. Never changed any settings or new apps, even had almost all apps set on no cell data usage (music, iTunes etc) while I was trying to figure out what was going on. Finally downloaded an app that showed my data usage was all occurring while I was driving on the freeway between work and home. I eventually did the same and went to Privacy -> location services and turned almost everything off and suddenly back to normal data usage. Haven't noticed any draw backs to having the location services turned off.

Apple really needs to fix this issue. It is very annoying not being able to use your data for anything else.

My Time & Location usage this month is 2.5GB in 22 days.

It is absolutely ludicrous.

What kind of data that transmits time or location information could possibly amount to that much bandwidth usage ?

I'm not sure what to do.

The whole point of centralized GPS and time gathering in iOS was to make it more efficient.

This smells like a major bug.

Hope the new iOS coming out in a few weeks will fix this.

Consider what services you use on this iPhone that require time and/or location more than most iPhones would.

One thing I see is that your Messaging Services seems proportionally high, compared to mine. Messaging, especially iMessage, certainly uses location and time.

Anyway, only you can compare the types of functions you perform on this iPhone versus others you're familiar with that show lower time and location use.

I did, but none are set as Always. They are either off or only when app is in use. My Maps usage is tiny, because we use Google Maps so Google Maps is reasonably high at 100+MB.

Is it possible for Pokemon Go to consume this much data on location service? The data usage from the game itself is not that much, and I can't seem to find any other stories on Pokemon using this much data.

Something recently changed or broke in iOS or some apps.

I suddenly get huge cellular data consumption for System & Time, which I didn't get in the past.

I reset the statistics yesterday night, and within 12 hours, I'm at 100MB. Crazy.

I have not added any new apps, or changed my usage pattern, so something else must cause this.

It's pretty annoying.

Same here. I use Google Maps with Offline caching for the areas I will be in. I did use Apple Maps once accidentally (it's so easy to ask Siri to guide me!), was that enough to cause the Time & Location to need 2.5GB of data? That's over one and a third times as much as the rest of my data usage!

This will cost me an extra $15, because I'm going to have to pay for extra data. I'd at least like to be able to tell what the cause was so that I could avoid it in the future.

Please allow tapping on the time & location in Settings>Cellular>System Services to see a breakdown of what triggered the data usage.

Yes, I know, the breakdown might not be perfect - an app may be the first to use the data and then another app uses the same data - I don't care, I need to at least be able to get a basic idea of what is happening.
