iPad Pro 10.5 screen randomly freezes - anyone else have this?

Brand new (obviously) iPad Pro 10.5. It happens, very intermittently but it happens. It's like the touch screen is dead. Double-clicking the home button brings up the task list. You can then move to a different app. But then the screen is still dead. Turning the screen off and on will reset things, so that the screen becomes live again. Frustrating and not something I've ever seen before. This is my fourth iPad. Maybe it's defective? Just wondering is it just me or do other people see this too.

Thanks for replying. Software is up to date. So far, restart or reboot has not been necessary. Simply recycling wake/sleep brings the screen back to life. it's still very intermittent.

Looks like not a lot of people experience this.

I have this issue as well -- more than a couple times. Screen becomes unresponsive. Only a sleep/wake recycle will fix. Using iPad Pro 10.5 WiFi (256 GB) with iOS 10.3.2

It doesn't appear to be "frozen" however. I can still double click the home button and go into multitasking mode -- but the screen will not respond to any touch or swipe gestures.

Seeing how I don't recall this ever happening with my prior iPad Pro 9.5, and on the same iOS version -- I hope it's not a hardware design issue.

BTW, I lost two HearthStone matches because of this.

Hi malum363!

I understand that the display on your iPad Pro intermittently becomes unresponsive, and I'm happy to help. Please start by updating your iPad software if it is not already up to date. Also refer to the second link below to see if there are any steps listed that you haven't tried.

Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn‘t respond to touch

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

AppleCare also ran a diagnostics test on my iPad Pro too via internet, it passed too. He also told me that, I am sure, you will use your iPad for a long time with no problems. What a joke ? I am also very disappointed with this iPad Pro, after paying so much money. I expect it to function perfectly.

I wonder if it is related to bad RAM issue. I pray that it is only a iOS issue, so that it can be fixed by iOS update. I like this iPad when it functions well, as I am typing this message right now. Otherwise, it is so much hassle to go to Apple Shop in another city for replacement. It is also question mark, if they replace it ? If they don't acknowledge the issue. It is also impossible to reproduce the issue, because it happens randomly, when it is least expected. Only thing, I can do right now, is filling an Apple Feedback form for iPad, and letting Apple know about this issue on my iPad Pro.

Here is the link for Apple Feedback page for Apple:

To Everyone who has posted with this display freezing issues on 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro models,

I cannot BELIEVE with nine pages of users with this issue no one here has mentioned Apple’s product feedback pages!

Apple designers and engineers do not read these forums. Apple supplies these forums for users to work out their product issues with other users, but these community forums ARE monitored/moderated by Apple Staff assigned to these community forums, along with some community help specialist, but I do not think any info is ever passed on to who/mever the cognizant parties are who would need to know if there are any mounting issues with a product or software.

The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to ALL of you and to get Apple to get a “heads-up” on this problematic 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro screen freezing issue, is to use their feedback portion of their website.

ALL of you need to constantly hammer this feedback page to alert Apple about this technical issue!

Apple cannot fix what they are never made aware of!!!

All of you submit your feedback here!

Cognizant Apple employees read ALL feedback generated from all of the various feedback pages and transfers the data to the Apple personnel , but NO Apple employees will ever respond with any type of direct, individual replies from the feedback you submit via this feedback link.

Good Luck to You All!!!

I don't have cellular, but mine has frozen twice since I reset all settings as advised by Apple Care. I think I'll back it up tomorrow, go back to factory settings and see what happens. If that doesn't correct the issue, time to visit the "Genius Bar" or whatever they call it these days, and tell them to fix the problem

I'm also having the same problem--freezes periodically for about 30 seconds then its OK. I can hit the home button but nothing else is responsive. It's happened in different apps randomly. This is my third iPad and I never had the issue with the previous two devices. I also have the 512/wifi only. With this many reports there is obviously an issue--hopefully Apple will get it corrected quickly!

As I noted earlier, I was going to backup the iPad and go back to factory settings. I did this yesterday (time consuming) but I haven't had a freeze up since then. I'm going to keep a close watch on my iPad. If it freezes again, only once, I'm going to print out this thread and go to my local Apple store, 10 minutes away, and find out what's going on with the new iPad Pro, 10.5. For the cost of this thing, we should not have to put up with this.

I have had this same issue with new Ipad pro 10.5. Took to Apple store July 15 and they replaced it. I had it one month. Now this morning, July 17, same thing happened with replaced new Ipad. Have to turn off and on and then

it resets. Freezes within apps and on main screen. Very intermittent and unpredictable. Store person did not suggest major reset, but hpone chat person did. I chose to go to store instead of doing reset myself.

Did you find that you could still bring up the task list, even in the screen-frozen state?

Just to update my experiences -- since starting this thread, the freezing has not happened to me. Knock on wood. I'm thinking that it's just some weird symptom of some data driven transient condition which for some reason goes away over time. I could be delusional though.

It reminds me of a weird syndrome I had where my wifi was being turned off, randomly. Not disconnected. Turned off. It happened a bunch of times. Then it just went away. This was right after upgrading iOS last year some time, on an air 2.

Jul 17, 2017 6:28 AM in response to malum363

Not sure I tried to bring up the task list. Do you mean by double clicking the home button? Not sure I tried that ever. The reason I think it is weird is that it froze today on a brand new Ipad that I was given two days ago. Today is the first time it has happened and its usually only been once a day on previous Ipad. No clear pattern as to when or why it happens. Not specific to any app, and when app wont respond, neither will home screen tap in icons.

Jul 17, 2017 6:42 AM in response to tscheel

I did the factory reset and it seemed to correct the problem, at least for a few days. We've had company so I haven't been able to break free to go to the Apple store. Based on your experience, that may be a waste of time.

If someone at Apple is monitoring this thread, how about getting your stuff together and fix this problem.
