iPad Pro 10.5 screen randomly freezes - anyone else have this?

Brand new (obviously) iPad Pro 10.5. It happens, very intermittently but it happens. It's like the touch screen is dead. Double-clicking the home button brings up the task list. You can then move to a different app. But then the screen is still dead. Turning the screen off and on will reset things, so that the screen becomes live again. Frustrating and not something I've ever seen before. This is my fourth iPad. Maybe it's defective? Just wondering is it just me or do other people see this too.

Thanks for replying. Software is up to date. So far, restart or reboot has not been necessary. Simply recycling wake/sleep brings the screen back to life. it's still very intermittent.

Looks like not a lot of people experience this.

I have the same problem. Sometimes the screen just freezes and no touches anywhere will get it going again. Sometimes screen goes black and no touches, not even pressing the Home button, will awaken it. I have new iPad 10.5, 256, updated a few days ago to 10.3.3, the latest version available. Screen just froze again...after not having used the iPad for a few minutes, it put itself to sleep (black screen) and nothing would awaken it...not touches, not Home, not double clicks.

With all of us complaining about this issue, you'd think Apple would do something to correct the problem. NOT! They don't even acknowledge the problem. They just take our money and put it in the bank. They need to better quality control before they put this stuff on the market. Based on my experience with this thing as well as the new Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, also junk, there is no way I'd even consider an iPhone 8. Jobs must be rolling over in his grave!!!

I was at the Apple Store today and showed one of the "Genusises" portions of this thread. He said he was unaware of the problem and asked if I used a previous backup to activate the new iPad. DUH, of course I did. Well he said the problem might be related to the backup. I stated that I had already restored the iPad to its original setting subsequent to this problem and restored it from a newer backup. A scratch of the chin and he walked away👿

Of late, all Apple reps can tell you to do is reboot/restore to original settings. The quality of customer support had significantly deteriorated. When I first had this problem, I contacted Apple Care via the chat line. I knew more about the iPad than she did. Awful. I bought the new 2017 iMac and had problems with the magic keyboard. Again, very little support. Earlier this week while typing, the keyboard was all screwed up. Same issue I had been dealing with since I received the new iMac. I went over to my local Apple Store and waited to see one of the “geniuses”. What a joke that was. The guy took the keyboard out back, came back a few minutes later and told me it was fine and the problem was probably with my trackpad. Trackpad? It’s nowhere near the keyboard. I go back home, pick up the trackpad and return to the Apple store. The guy hooks up the trackpad and the keyboard and proceeds to move the cursor around and then proceeds to type a bunch of letters on the keyboard and proclaims that both the keyboard and the trackpad are OK. Maybe it’s me!!! I replied to this guy that I’ve been typing longer than he has been on this planet and all I wanted was the keyboard replaced. He talks to the “manager” who authorizes the replacement of the keyboard and trackpad.

New keyboard works without any issues. It ***** that one has to go thru all that nonsense to get something that works. BTW, when I was there, one of the “geniuses” was helping a person with an issue. He told her it was probably a virus. Are you kidding me? Apple and viruses are hardly ever a problem and this clown, without any diagnostic testing, is saying the problem is virus related.

Getting back to your/our problems with the new iPad. I installed the new software update when it was released. While the iPad still locks up once in a while, it’s not nearly as frequent. I don’t think Apple is as conscientious as it once was in field testing new/updated products before releasing them to the general public. That being said, I have an iPhone 6 that I want to replace with the new iPhone 8. In light of my recent issues with Apple products, there is no way I’d buy one of those as soon as they are released. Just too wary of the reliability of the product.

I have an iPad 10.5 256G no Cellular and the freezing has happened 3 times. When the touch screen freezes, the home "button", volume and sleep buttons still worked.

My work-around on this last freeze was to hit sleep and then wake the iPad. The TouchID worked and the iPad touchscreen resumed working.

My guess is that there is a software issue and I look forward to a fix at the next iOS update.

I had the same problem for the first time a few days ago. I also have a new iPad 10.5 Pro, wifi only, with 256 GB, running iOS 10.3.3. I was updating apps in the App Store app and walked away for a few minutes. When I returned, instead of seeing the Updates tab screen in the App Store app, I was viewing the Features tab screen. I tried touching the Updates tab button but my iPad was completely frozen. I tried multi-tapping and could view my home screen and the App Store app, but could not close the App Store app by swiping upwards or bring up my Home screen by touching it, and I was now unable to close multi-tapping.

Consequently, I was forced to do a hard reset and then all was OK again.

One more strange thing happened. By touching settings > privacy > analytics, I could see the analytics entries which included 2 entries for my hard reset, among other entries. I exited out of this view and called Apple Support to report the issue. During my telephone call, I tried to return to view the analytics entries (which minutes ago had displayed about 12 entries) and it now displayed no entries.

I personally believe this is a software bug in iOS 10.3.3 effecting the new iPad Pro 10.5 only. Doing a reset or an uninstall will not help in my opinion, and waste a lot of time. My Apple advisor did not recommend anything except seeing if it happened again. He also did not mentioned that he was familiar with this issue. This surprises me because of the number of people reporting the same issue above.

I am having the same issue. I have been using my iPad Pro 10.5" 256GB Wifi (iOS 10.3.2) only last 3 days, and my iPad Pro screen froze for the first time. Screen got dark and not responding at all. I never had this issue on my iPad 2 last 6 years. I did solve this issue, by pressing long enough to see slider, then press Home button until Home screen comes up. This action clears the iPad Pro memory. After this action, my iPad Pro 10.5" was operating normal again. I hope that this is a software issue, not a hardware issue.

I just got my iPad Pro 10.5 256GB, set it up today and found this issue right out of the box. Screen froze no response, blank screen, holding down power and home button to reboot only got it back up. I am updating to 10.3.3 but now seeing that many have this issue I have no hopes. Very disappointed with Apple, did not expect this from such premium brand. Hopefully they have a real solution... Just wasted $100 bucks getting apple care for this as well.

I had the same problem with my 64GB base model Wi-Fi iPad Pro 10.5 inches.

I had updated to iOS 11.

The screen has frozen twice now including today.

The screen becomes black and nothing is visible. I believe it's a software problem because once you restart the iPad by clicking on the touch id and the power button together the iPad becomes normal again.

If the problem persists I will have to probably look at a replacement.

Today frozen screen happened again second time, two days after first frozen screen. When I touch Settings app, it was unresponsive and screen froze. I pressed Sleep/Wake button, after that screen was black. I reset (pressing Sleep/Wake button and Home button at the same time until Apple logo appears) iPad Pro. After that my iPad Pro was functioning normal again. Too bad it happens also on iOS 11. I called AppleCare and report this problem to Technician, he said resetting and upgrading the iOS, was the best thing that I can do to solve this problem. It looks like, I will go to Genius Bar for this problem.
