iPad Pro 10.5 screen randomly freezes - anyone else have this?

Brand new (obviously) iPad Pro 10.5. It happens, very intermittently but it happens. It's like the touch screen is dead. Double-clicking the home button brings up the task list. You can then move to a different app. But then the screen is still dead. Turning the screen off and on will reset things, so that the screen becomes live again. Frustrating and not something I've ever seen before. This is my fourth iPad. Maybe it's defective? Just wondering is it just me or do other people see this too.

Mine got a lot better with 11.3 but then restarted with the issue a few days later. Took it to Apple store and they replaced it. Tech said it’s most likely a logic board issue. While reduce motion, and disabling promotion helps this gimps your iPad un necessarily. Just get it replaced. Seems like a known issue they’re just not making public.

To Everyone who has posted with this display freezing issues on 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro models,

I cannot BELIEVE with nine pages of users with this issue no one here has mentioned Apple’s product feedback pages!


Apple designers and engineers do not read these forums. Apple supplies these forums for users to work out their product issues with other users, but these community forums ARE monitored/moderated by Apple Staff assigned to these community forums, along with some community help specialist, but I do not think any info is ever passed on to who/mever the cognizant parties are who would need to know if there are any mounting issues with a product or software.


The only way to get Apple to, DIRECTLY, listen to ALL of you and to get Apple to get a “heads-up” on this problematic 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro screen freezing issue, is to use their feedback portion of their website.

ALL of you need to constantly hammer this feedback page to alert Apple about this technical issue!


Apple cannot fix what they are never made aware of!!!

On Jan 6 I removed a bunch of Safari tabs — I usually have several dozen open, and reduced it to a few dozen — and the freezes stopped until this evening, when I had one in Pages (and it stopped, as before, after about 5 seconds). A check of Analytics data showed no events logged close to that time. Now to kill a bunch more Safari tabs.

Just spent a week using my iPad 12.9 only on a stand and I think you are onto something edouard63 ... I've turned back on the parallax effect as well ... no freezing all week which is a dramatic difference ... for me this specifically means I'm not holding the iPad in my left hand ... with the home button either at the bottom (portrait) or on the right (landscape) ... are you still getting the same result?

Yes I had same problem since long (iPad Pro 12.9inch wifi only).looks like it use to happen mostly when I hold with both hands .But since I installed 11.3 iOS problem has been solved .I even had screen not wake up issue which had solved few updates back, looks like apple do solve problem .But they should test and sell products so others don’t waste time replacing stuff.

My iPad Pro 12.9 2017 256gb has the same problem. Today I called apple and they ran remote diagnostics and said my touch screen is ok and I need to remove screen protector and Smart Cover. They refused to accept the problem. So far the only thing that worked is switching to 60 Hz. My ipad cost me about 1530$ in Russia i find the whole situation totally unacceptable.

I have the same issues with randomly unresponsive touchscreen on an iPad 12.9 2017 cellular 256GB. I went to apple, showing them some vids I made, for there is no guarantee beeing able to reproduce the malfunction. The first time they asked me to reset the iPad through DFU-Mode, setting it up as a new iPad without using a back-up, but even this wasn‘t going to solve the issue. Yesterday I went to apple once again, providing videos as evidence, and they are going to replace the iPad. Asking them, if this is a known issue they denied. I am hoping to get the problem solved with the new one.

Now I am trying to turn off the 120Hz feature as I read this would help, but this is not an acceptable solution - paying for something you cannot use, especially noticing clearly the lag of the apple pencil. On the other side - I am not sure if this is what it is about, because my brother have the 1st gen. iPad 12.9 , which only runs @60Hz and he is facing exactly the same issues. But this started to him only after switching to ios 11, while not having any problems on ios 10.

It’s ios 11 issue for me as it was working fine when I was ios10 , I have iPad Pro 12.9 second gen. You can see people facing problems with 9.7 or older gen 12.9 pro but maybe after iOS 11 (correct me if I am wrong), iOS 10 had other issue like the iPad doesn’t wake up even after pressing home button, which was there for few months but it was solved in one of iOS 11 update , hopefully they solve this in iOS 12.
