iPad Pro 10.5 screen randomly freezes - anyone else have this?

Brand new (obviously) iPad Pro 10.5. It happens, very intermittently but it happens. It's like the touch screen is dead. Double-clicking the home button brings up the task list. You can then move to a different app. But then the screen is still dead. Turning the screen off and on will reset things, so that the screen becomes live again. Frustrating and not something I've ever seen before. This is my fourth iPad. Maybe it's defective? Just wondering is it just me or do other people see this too.

Mine got a lot better with 11.3 but then restarted with the issue a few days later. Took it to Apple store and they replaced it. Tech said it’s most likely a logic board issue. While reduce motion, and disabling promotion helps this gimps your iPad un necessarily. Just get it replaced. Seems like a known issue they’re just not making public.

Just to give an update on my own experience. The screen freeze-up scenario happened several times to me during the first week of ownership, prompting me to submit this post. It has not happened since. Very mysterious.

Someone on this thread was wondering if the problem could have something to with some bad RAM somewhere in the 4GB in our spanking new 10.5's. Interesting. What if the OS had an ability to detect that a bad memory location exists, and flag it as not to be used going forward?

Well,if that is indeed the case, shouldn’t Apple replace the RAM on these things? Mine still locks up but not as frequently. However, it is something we should not have to deal with at this price point. I noted that

Consumer Reports downgraded the Microsoft Surface for lock up problems

I've updated to 10.3.3, had Apple run hardware diagnostics but found no issue. I ran 3D mark testing but it didn't hang up. Will keep testing and report back if it freezes again.

Note that someone mentioned the RAM but there is nothing to verify it's for sure the RAM unless someone can get Memtest86 running on it.

Apples dianostics does not check RAM as per my call with them.

It happened to my Ipad pro twice. Especially on horizontal screen. Once on monopoly, once on bomberman game. The touch screen doesn't respond, even the turning off slider. Tilting the Ipad horizontally then vertically fixes it. But maybe it just fixes itself After a while. I am not sure if its a hardware fault or a software fault.

Same issue out of the box... 9.7" iPad Pro... not happy. I've been a long time apple user, and frankly I'm shocked since this is an old post. My screen becomes completely unresponsive, home button works, attached keyboards work, power button works, and the only way to get it back is to hard reset. Sometimes I have to hard reset up to three times to get it to come back to life. That makes me fearful that it's a hardware issue.... I decided to finally upgrade since my old 2nd gen was crashing all the time and many of the apps were no longer supported. Thinking of returning my iPad to Best Buy and trying one more... if I get the same problem, I may just get a 5th gen and forget the iPad Pro. Ain't that cool if it doesn't work.

Hi, I have had the same problem with my iPad Pro 10.5 256gb Wifi. I believe the issue is software related as I have found another way to recover the screen feeze. The freeze I am talking about is where the physical buttons work but the touch screen doesn't respond. If you change the orientation of the device, the touch screen starts working again. Return it to its original orientation and it is still working. This can be done without using the home button or power off switches keeping the current app active. I find it hard to believe that if you can recover it that way, that it is a hardware issue,

Yeah I'm no tech guru for sure... my bad if I insinuated it being a hardware issue. It was just a thought. But yes like you said it's just a unresponsive screen... all the buttons still work... however flipping the orientation didn't work for me. Nothing did. Sometimes even a hard reset doesn't work. It happened to me 3x upon opening on Saturday. Hasn't happened since. Holding off on the return til it happens again. If it happens again I may try returning for a new one and holding off on the software update for like a week. If nothing happens on the new one til after initiating the update I'll know it's a problem with the newest iOS patch.

I just bought a 10.5" iPad Pro with 256 gb 10.3.3 and no cellular to use in my airplane for my navigation charts. Had it freeze this week while on final approach when landing. Couldn't trouble shoot. Checked after landing and all was good. Thought it was heat related at first. Just happened again at home tonight. Froze for about 10 sec and then resumed just fine.

I am one of the first reporters of this problem. My iPad Pro 10.5" 256GB has still iOS 10.3.3 on it. I also had this problem (unresponsive touch screen), 4 or 5 times during the first two weeks. I perform soft-reset to fix this issue every time. One day later after this issue occured, another issue popped up. Second issue was: iPad Pro did not wake up from sleep. Soft-Reset also fixed this issue temporary. After that, I decided to do a Hard-Reset by DFU mode by using iTunes on my Mac. After Hard-Reset, I did not restore from backup, instead I setup iPad Pro as a new device, and manually download apps. Next day after this, frozen touch screen issue happened one more time. Since that time (almost two months), this issue has never happened again. But few days ago after two months, after an intensive usage, frozen touchscreen issue occurred again. But this time, I clicked Sleep/Wake button once, and touchscreen was back to normal, this time I did not need to do a Soft-Reset. After next day of this issue, my iPad Pro did not wake up from sleep again, this time I held down sleep/wake button for few seconds until Apple logo appeared, and iPad Pro was back to normal again. This is my experience, using iPad Pro last 2.5 months. I started believing that, it may be bad batch of products. I am seriously considering to replace this iPad Pro at Apple Store, if I can.

It's really sad that this thread started back in June or July, and nothing has come from Apple to fix it.

Ive been wanting an iPad Pro 12.9 for a while now, but not after coming across this thread.

i won't pay that kind of money for a device that obviously has a defect that's being ignored.

i wish you all luck in getting this fixed by Apple, they owe you all a replacement (one which works) or a permanent fix to this screen freezing problem. I miss Steve Jobs.

I was having the same problem with my iPad Pro 1st Gen. I can tell you how mine was fixed.

You will have to erase your iPad completely and go thru iTunes and reinstal as new. You will need your computer and will have to connect to your computer via your USB charging cord. Basically, updating via WiFi is not an option until you have done this. For whatever reason, there Is an issue with updating via WiFi. This is a problem that needs to be addressed with Apple. I now make sure to connect my iPad, the “old school” way when download/uploading updates. It runs smoothly now. If you need help with doing this, call Apple support and they will walK you thru it.

Hope me this helps. 🙋-1F3FB;♀
