iPad Pro 10.5 screen randomly freezes - anyone else have this?

Brand new (obviously) iPad Pro 10.5. It happens, very intermittently but it happens. It's like the touch screen is dead. Double-clicking the home button brings up the task list. You can then move to a different app. But then the screen is still dead. Turning the screen off and on will reset things, so that the screen becomes live again. Frustrating and not something I've ever seen before. This is my fourth iPad. Maybe it's defective? Just wondering is it just me or do other people see this too.

Mine got a lot better with 11.3 but then restarted with the issue a few days later. Took it to Apple store and they replaced it. Tech said it’s most likely a logic board issue. While reduce motion, and disabling promotion helps this gimps your iPad un necessarily. Just get it replaced. Seems like a known issue they’re just not making public.

Please see my post below. Mine was fixed. It’s frustrating. We have the ability to use WiFi now instead of the tedious old school way of connecting to iTunes, but it’s something we have to do, otherwise, it’s as though there Is a broken link in the update. Wish I had a better fix for you guys, but this is the way it is.

You HAVE TO restore from iTune. You can’t do the restore over wifi. As well, you shouldn’t do future dates over WiFi. You fin the risk of having the problem again. Wifi is unreliable. It can be slow and choppy at times. Best bet is to restore from iTunes always.

Best of luck..

Your post is about month old, so not sure you’ll get this but I left a message for another user at the bottom. Mine was fixed by:

1. Backing up to iCloud (just in case. You won’t use the back up)

2. Erase back to factory settings

3. Reinstall FROM iTUNES *AS NEW DEVICE.*

**DO NOT USE WIFI.** Make sure you connect to your computer and install from iTunes.

All future updates should also be done from iTunes. I believe it is a combination of WiFi and Software. WiFi can be unreliable and it can cut out for a second or two while update is installing vital info.

This is how they fixed mine. I hope this helps.

Feel free reply with a question and if you need extra help with iTunes install just get ahold of support. They were real awesome!

You must do several things.

1. Back up to your iCloud account.

2. Erase and reset back to factory settings.

3. Connect your iPad to iTunes on your computer

4. Set up as new divice from iTunes

Note: Stay connected to your computer until the update is completed!! DO NOT set up from back up! This was only done “just in case.”

Connect to your computer for all future updates to ensure solid updates. WiFi is sketchy and not always reliable. ANY interruption during updates no matter whether a second, or a minute, can cause updates to load improperly and result in glitches on your device.

spjk, do you also get a lot of 'excessive wake ups' errors logged in Analytics? ... p.s. I find that no errors are logged during a touch screen freeze event ... I think the iPad recovers (from some issue) but doesn't log an error report ... what ever is on the screen during a freeze event still moves ... iPad just seems to not accept touch input ... it's makes gaming a real pain.

I've experimented for the last week with the setting in 'General/Accessibility/Reduce Motion' that turns off the parallax effect of icons ... it seems to reduce the freeze events for me by a noticeable amount ... I also find rotating the screen from landscape to portrait (or vice versa) brings the screen back to life more often than not.

Be interested in what others see when trying the above.

windower, I see no excessive wakeup errors, assuming that’s what the event is called and is not something in the data. There are lots of JetsamEvent’s, but I don’t know yet if those correlate with the screen freezes. I’ll try Reduce Motion; thanks. (I had to hunt for analytics; never looked at them before.)

Seems like the iPad has many different types of touch related issues.

I narrowed mine down and this is 100% the cause of mine. When I hold the iPad landscape and put ANY pressure on the bit bezel where the camera is, the touch stops. So literally just holding the iPad will drop some and sometimes all touch screen function until I let go. I’ve also noticed there’s some clicking in that area too. This happens more after long sessions of holding the iPad.

You guys need to check if that may be the case for you as well.

I removed all of the widgets on the notification page and it seems to be helping.

Different things seem to be working for different people. What hasn’t worked for meFull erase, iTunes restore, turning everything off (background refresh, Siri, dictation, thumbprint lock, location, gestures, Bluetooth, etc.

Widget Removal

Slide from top down

swipe left to right one time

tap “edit”

tap “-“ then “remove” for each of the widgets (e.g. news, weather, calendar)

Be sure to tap “done” at the top/ middle/ off to the right hand corner after removing.

I do believe that this is a software issue because I wasn’t experiencing this with 10.2. Hope this helps.

So far, nothing seems to improve my freezing, in fact, in seems to be happening more often and for longer periods. It went from maybe a second to now a few seconds at a time, and from every few minutes to now every 10 or so seconds...

I don‘t have a light leak, and have tried when not charging as i remember previous model iPhones when plugged into the charger, the screen would do exactly what the iPad is now doing, but not charging makes no difference.

Mine is not used for any intense purposes, mainly just web browsing, the odd YouTube and skype message (not video or voice) and is in a climate controlled (22 degree) room, no sun, no heat, so all of those things can be rules out.

All I can put it down to is a software issue as it worked flawlessly until earlier this year. If it is a hardware issue, and so many devices are affected, Apple would have a MASSIVE issue on their hands...

Maybe the processor is busy and the touch controller comms is delayed and therefore unresponsive? And it has been caused by a change in iOS in recent version...

I really wish Apple actually gave a shot, read their community forums and did something about reported issues...
