Apple Watch not counting outdoor walk exercise

When I use the outdoor walk workout, nothing I do counts as exercise. My pace is fine, my heart rate is high enough. If I use indoor walk, it works fine, but, I'd prefer that my outdoor walks be recorded as such, because it seems ridiculous to have paid $370 for something that doesn't work as it is supposed to.

I've read other threads that suggest unpairing and then setting the watch up as a new watch (have done that), have suggested wiping everything and starting fresh (have done that too and lost all of the data and achievements I had earned before).

When I first bought the watch, it worked fine until a sleep app froze on it one day. I realize that shouldn't have anything to do with the issue, so it's likely coincidental.

I have also read older threads stating that the outdoor walk workout was glitchy, but, I'm unsure if Apple considers that problem to be solved?

My watch is on version 3.2.2 and my phone is on 10.3.2.

Mine was solved by re-enabling all the location services for calibration etc, then turning off both iPhone and watch, then turning on iPhone first, then watch....then going for a walk while holding the iPhone for the first 15 minutes. The route map and walk were both recorded. You do have to walk at a good pace, though.

I'm having the same problem, and it used to work fine. I take the same walk on my lunch break every day. So it's not that I'm not walking hard enough to get credit. It's literally the same walk I've taken every day for 2 years, and it used to give me credit for the whole thing on outdoor walk. I agree with everyone else. I don't want a workaround. This an expensive device and it should work properly. What I'd like to hear is that they're going to do an update to fix this problem. It's frustrating me. I'm pregnant, and I want credit for my exercise!

Same issue here with the series 3 watch.

The ridiculous thing is that I can do 30m on the Treadmill, about 1.4mile, which is something like a 24m/mile I believe and using the Indoor Walk I get full 30m exercise.

Yet I take my dog for a walk, about a mile in 21m (so quicker pace than the treadmill) and using the Outdoor Walk I earned a whole 2m exercise.

How does that make any kind of sense???

Apple needs to have better allowance for pacing variations. I’m short, average shape with lower back issues. What they consider a brisk pace isn’t the same for me and a lot of others. And just because one persons pace is slower doesn’t mean it’s not valid exercise because exercise has a different value depending on body type, health level, etc.

It’s just really frustrating to have this expensive piece of tech and not have it function in a logical way for one of its main purposes.

Funny...my Series 1 has been working fine for a long time for my Outdoor Walks but today it went funky again. It didn't start my walk (according to the map route) until about a third of the way in....odd,I've never noticed it doing that before. I attributed it to my being hit by a car recently while wearing the watch (on a walk) and being unable to use it for almost 2 weeks while I healed...I thought maybe it had lost its calibration in the collision/fall but I see here that people are still having this issue so maybe it just is a software thing.

There was a software update recently that purported to fix the non-attributed activity minutes and it seemed to have fixed the problem but now I don't know. I've just rebooted my iPhone and Watch and will see if it repeats tomorrow. Hopefully it was just one of those things.

Completely agree. I chatted with an Apple specialist yesterday, told her everything I've tried, unpairing, repairing, making sure location is on, reset calibration, walk outside after calibration, even reset my phone and all she can tell me is maybe send it to Apple for a repair.... but I just read someone bought it brand new and has this issue so I really think it's the software issue?? Not using the outdoor walk credits more exercise minutes when I just take a random walk lol

Hi

To credit progress towards your Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk. This requirement applies both during general daily wear and when recording workouts via the Workout app.

Exercise credit is awarded for each minute during which this requirement is met. It is possible that, during your workouts, you are only meeting that requirement for part of the time and/or your arm movements are not resulting in your activity being tracked accurately.

The definition of a brisk walk varies from person to person and depends on your personal information. To check that this is accurate - and to update it over time:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

When recording fitness activities, be sure to use the Workout app (or a third-party app) and to choose the activity type that most closely matches your workout, including choosing Other for workouts that are neither included within nor sufficiently similar to those in the main list. This enables your watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when tracking results.

For example, with Apple Watch (first generation) and Series 1 models, the watch can access Location Services data from the paired iPhone if it is taken along during outdoor walking, running and cycling workouts. Series 2 models have built-in GPS.

During general daily wear and when using the Workout app to record workouts when GPS data is either not relevant or not available (eg Indoor Walk), the Activity app and Workout app track your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including pace and progress towards the Exercise goal.

For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around during daily wear and to move as expected during workouts.

Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of estimations made by Activity app and Workout app. More information and instructions for calibrating your watch are available via the link below. The article also includes instructions for resetting existing calibration data and starting afresh. (Resetting your calibration data will not erase your Activity history).

If you would prefer to receive Exercise credit for the full duration of your workouts, regardless of their estimated intensity levels, track them via the Workout app using "Other" as the activity type. This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. Active calories will be estimated at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data recorded by the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher. (Note that neither distance nor a route map are recorded under this workout activity type).

The route map line colour does not indicate a brisk pace (the line would be coloured green).

Having followed the steps in my previous reply (including calibrating your Apple Watch afresh), if the issue persists and you are concerned that your Apple Watch is not recognising your exercise accurately, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance, including to arrange for your Apple Watch to be checked and serviced, if recommended:

Just had the same problem two days in a row. I walked 25 minutes, covered a half mile (I use a walker) and the green exercise ring barely moved, given me 3 minutes of credit when I'd been out there 25 minutes and my bpm was high and showed on the chart. This is really unacceptable. Apple should admit that there is a problem here and move to fix it. I had already gone in and reset the exercise thing. Really irritated that I do all this work and the dumb ring doesn't move--it's ruining my day!

This is an unacceptable solution. I have gone for 2 outdoor walks at a good pace at heat rate average of 115 to 123 and exceeding 1 mood le each time to only get 4 minutes credit for 1 hour of work. I find this watch series 3 pointless to have if it cannot credit the activity properly. Also, using the Other exercise option is simply a joke when it gives no distance. Overpriced piece of electronics.

The problem persists. Just went for a 90 minute walk 4.3 miles and got a mere 17 minutes of credit. I have tried all remedies suggested (latest software, paired properly, calibrated correctly, heart rate registers correctly, miles and route register correctly, health info is correct, power saving is turned off). Probably just some millennial programmer who thinks you need to walk at a 15 minute pace to count, or some such. Very frustrating user experience, not what I expect from Apple for the premium price paid.

Yes, the discrepancy between indoor and outdoor is baffling. After I posted the last comment yesterday, I did an indoor walk for 30 mins at the same pace and same average heart rate as my 90 minute outdoor walk, and got the full 30 min credit. That this makes any logical sense to some people at Apple makes me question their intelligence!
