Apple Watch not counting outdoor walk exercise

When I use the outdoor walk workout, nothing I do counts as exercise. My pace is fine, my heart rate is high enough. If I use indoor walk, it works fine, but, I'd prefer that my outdoor walks be recorded as such, because it seems ridiculous to have paid $370 for something that doesn't work as it is supposed to.

I've read other threads that suggest unpairing and then setting the watch up as a new watch (have done that), have suggested wiping everything and starting fresh (have done that too and lost all of the data and achievements I had earned before).

When I first bought the watch, it worked fine until a sleep app froze on it one day. I realize that shouldn't have anything to do with the issue, so it's likely coincidental.

I have also read older threads stating that the outdoor walk workout was glitchy, but, I'm unsure if Apple considers that problem to be solved?

My watch is on version 3.2.2 and my phone is on 10.3.2.

Mine was solved by re-enabling all the location services for calibration etc, then turning off both iPhone and watch, then turning on iPhone first, then watch....then going for a walk while holding the iPhone for the first 15 minutes. The route map and walk were both recorded. You do have to walk at a good pace, though.

What irks me is sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Appears to stop working after an update and then starts working again after a week or so. Not a big deal since all I really care about is how far I walked and the time in which I walked it, but it is really stupid that I walk 4 miles in an hour and it doesn’t count that as exercise.

I am absolutely livid. I LITERALLY just bought series 3, GPS + Cellular for over $400!!! I had a series 1, but now my husband wears it just because and ours both do it!! So I’ve virtually spent over $700 on watches they just say oh we don’t know just use an app on your phone? No. Some of us like to log everything and it’s not ok that these do this! The fact that my watch is less than a week old with this issue is ridiculous. They better have an answer besides trying a third party app as much as I spend on their products (iPhone 3, 4, 4s, 5, 6, 6s Plus, iPhone X, macbook, iMac, iPads and the iPad Pro and pen, apple watch 1 and 3, and countless cases and accessories, and then my husband’s phones he’s had 4..) and I’d say they get enough from us to fix a problem with their devices!!

I'm really disappointed in Apple. It used to be the brand that I trusted to just work how it's supposed to and now I get frustrated at every turn. Just now, I tried to reply to the entire question but nothing happened when I clicked on "reply" so I had to reply to this comment. WHY DON'T THINGS WORK WITH YOUR SOFTWARE ANYMORE? I have done every fix possible for this problem and nothing has worked. Apple, please fix your app or don't have it on the watch!

My friend and I just recently bought the Apple Watch series 3. We love the watch but, as many here, very disappointed we cannot get credit for our outdoor walks. I’ve called Apple support and have done all their recommendations such as calibration, moving wrist with Watch, unpairing and pairing. The issue still exists. For a 2 mile brisk walk with an avg heart rate of 132, I got credit for 4 min. APPLE - FIX THIS!!!!!!!!!!

Wow!

Just read all of these messages and I'm really really confused.

Got myself an Apple Watch Series 3 GPS in the end of July and absolutely in love with it. It registers all of different workouts that I'm doing like Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Run, Outdoor Bike, Stair-Stepper and Yoga via Other.

My Watch is running watchOS 4.3.2 with the latest beta of iOS 12 on my iPhone. Now I'm scared that one day my Apple Watch will stop working like that.

Yesterday, took a thirty minute walk. The watch gave me three minutes of exercise. Apple should remove the outdoor walk option from the watch until they find a way to properly calibrate it. I agree. Watch far too expensive to fail in this simple task. This has been an ongoing problem with my watch and I’m definitely not satisfied with using the “0ther” exercise option as an alternative.

The “0other” option does not give you the distance travelled or your speed when walking. That’s why it is not a suitable option. The basic problem is that I’m an old fellow and I walk slowly., but it is exercise, even though I walk more slowly than a thirty year old. The outdoor walk option is set by Apple for a vigorous walker and it doesn’t take into account variations in age and it should do so .

I got my a series 3 watch about a week ago and I have had this problem since day one. A 30 minute walk at average 129pbm heart rate at a 19 minute/mile pace(i'm a big guy) counted 2 minutes of "exercise" .. this definitely seems like something that is broken and I hope Apple gets around to fixing it. I don't really care about "closing my rings" or whatever enough to do workarounds but if they are gonna advertise this as a feature it should probably work.
