Apple Watch not counting outdoor walk exercise

When I use the outdoor walk workout, nothing I do counts as exercise. My pace is fine, my heart rate is high enough. If I use indoor walk, it works fine, but, I'd prefer that my outdoor walks be recorded as such, because it seems ridiculous to have paid $370 for something that doesn't work as it is supposed to.

I've read other threads that suggest unpairing and then setting the watch up as a new watch (have done that), have suggested wiping everything and starting fresh (have done that too and lost all of the data and achievements I had earned before).

When I first bought the watch, it worked fine until a sleep app froze on it one day. I realize that shouldn't have anything to do with the issue, so it's likely coincidental.

I have also read older threads stating that the outdoor walk workout was glitchy, but, I'm unsure if Apple considers that problem to be solved?

My watch is on version 3.2.2 and my phone is on 10.3.2.

Jonathan,

When using the outdoor walk workout, it records everything correctly except giving me credit for the green exercise ring. Yesterday I walked for 30 minutes and the GPS map showed my heart rate was in the optimal range for exercise for nearly the entire time, except when I stopped to stretch my calf muscle for a moment. I was credited with ZERO minutes toward my exercise goal.User uploaded file

Today, I went to do roughly the same walk again. Started the outdoor walk workout and started walking. Ten minutes in, I checked to see if it was working. It wasn't. It had again credited me with zero minutes of exercise. My heart rate was where it needed to be for a brisk walk and my pace was an 18 minute mile. Being only 5'3", that's pretty fast for me. I quit the workout and decided to discard it. I then started the indoor walk workout and proceeded to walk at the same pace with the same heart rate for another 38 minutes, for which I received 38 minutes of exercise credit.

I understand that there's a "workaround," but, that seems stupid when I've just paid $370 for a watch that doesn't work correctly. I have read of this issue in several other threads. Is anything being done to correct this glitch??

Hi

To credit progress towards your Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk. This requirement applies both during general daily wear and when recording workouts via the Workout app.

Exercise credit is awarded for each minute during which this requirement is met. It is possible that, during your workouts, you are only meeting that requirement for part of the time and/or your arm movements are not resulting in your activity being tracked accurately.

The definition of a brisk walk varies from person to person and depends on your personal information. To check that this is accurate - and to update it over time:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

When recording fitness activities, be sure to use the Workout app (or a third-party app) and to choose the activity type that most closely matches your workout, including choosing Other for workouts that are neither included within nor sufficiently similar to those in the main list. This enables your watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when tracking results.

For example, with Apple Watch (first generation) and Series 1 models, the watch can access Location Services data from the paired iPhone if it is taken along during outdoor walking, running and cycling workouts. Series 2 models have built-in GPS.

During general daily wear and when using the Workout app to record workouts when GPS data is either not relevant or not available (eg Indoor Walk), the Activity app and Workout app track your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including pace and progress towards the Exercise goal.

For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around during daily wear and to move as expected during workouts.

Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of estimations made by Activity app and Workout app. More information and instructions for calibrating your watch are available via the link below. The article also includes instructions for resetting existing calibration data and starting afresh. (Resetting your calibration data will not erase your Activity history).

If you would prefer to receive Exercise credit for the full duration of your workouts, regardless of their estimated intensity levels, track them via the Workout app using "Other" as the activity type. This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. Active calories will be estimated at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data recorded by the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher. (Note that neither distance nor a route map are recorded under this workout activity type).

The route map line colour does not indicate a brisk pace (the line would be coloured green).

Having followed the steps in my previous reply (including calibrating your Apple Watch afresh), if the issue persists and you are concerned that your Apple Watch is not recognising your exercise accurately, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance, including to arrange for your Apple Watch to be checked and serviced, if recommended:

I’ve been having the same problem with the outdoor walk exercise not crediting me with workout minutes. It’s really strange but when I went to the iwatch app on my iPhone and clicked on Health and then edit, I was immediately credited with those minutes!

I’ve had this problem for months and this is the first time I’ve been allocated outdoor walk as an exercise. So give it a go.

Just had the same problem two days in a row. I walked 25 minutes, covered a half mile (I use a walker) and the green exercise ring barely moved, given me 3 minutes of credit when I'd been out there 25 minutes and my bpm was high and showed on the chart. This is really unacceptable. Apple should admit that there is a problem here and move to fix it. I had already gone in and reset the exercise thing. Really irritated that I do all this work and the dumb ring doesn't move--it's ruining my day!

Same problem. Yesterday I did two walks: one recorded fine and the second didn't record heart rate. A hike this morning didn't record but the heart rate monitor recorded through the Strava app. In the past Outdoor walks have crashed mid walk, recorded only a part of the walk, crashed at the end of the walk and lost all the data.

Software is up to date. I've unpaired the watch and repaired it just before a walk. I've calibrated it.

I'm forced to run a third party app or two because I want credit, but it's not really credit because you don't credit third party apps. *** Apple?

I'm having the same problem, and it used to work fine. I take the same walk on my lunch break every day. So it's not that I'm not walking hard enough to get credit. It's literally the same walk I've taken every day for 2 years, and it used to give me credit for the whole thing on outdoor walk. I agree with everyone else. I don't want a workaround. This an expensive device and it should work properly. What I'd like to hear is that they're going to do an update to fix this problem. It's frustrating me. I'm pregnant, and I want credit for my exercise!

If you go back to page 1 of this thread and look through the first 3-5 posts you will read about the work-around. It works but you apparently lose the map of your outdoor walk/run and you also apparently lose the distance you went.

So a pretty poor work-around. Seems Apple should spend some of the $31,970,000,000 in cash they were holding at the end of June 2018 to fix this issue.

It's not like this is an obscure feature of the watch either. "Intelligent activity tracking" is one of the featured things they tout when you go to Apple Watch Series 3 - Apple. For it to not "just work" feels like false advertising to someone who just shelled out $360+ on this watch.
