Connection error to iTunes Store

Can someone help me please? I have never had a problem connecting to the iTunes Store until two days ago. When I try and connect I get the following error message: "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection was reset. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."
My Network Connection is active. Nothing has changed on my computer that I am aware. So why all of a sudden can I not connect? I have been on the support pages and found nothing useful. I have tried the Network Diagnostice which just confirms at the bottom:
"Connection attempt to Apple web site was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out.
Connection attempt to iTunes Store was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out.
Secure connection attempt to iTunes Store was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out."
Help someone please??

Thanks for getting back and to the other people for responding! I must stress I am certainly NOT a techie by any stretch of the imagination. Just a simple chap who wants to listen to his music and buy more from iTunes...alas this is still NOT possible. I have AGAIN downloaded the latest iTunes version 7.0.2 and clicked repair. Rebooted the computer after installing and sadly the same error message. To be told by Apple that it is a Firewall issue is...well it begs belief! Tell Mr Job that!! Firewalls are in place to protect computers from junk and therefore potential viruses (No?) and so that suggests to me that iTunes is not safe or maybe just junk?? (again remember Im an amoeba with technology...just following some sort of logic!). This seems to be a common problem that has only recently occured. So why was everything OK before about a week ago?? This is an Apple issue that if they dont sort very soon will heavily tarnish their reputation. Existing customers will be forced to go elsewhere and new potential customers will get to hear about this issue and be sold off the famous iPod!! Well, I will give it another week and will sadly move on as I am a very impatient man! Anyone got any experience with Zune??

I have also had trouble with connecting to the iTunes store, I turned all firewalls off & still nothing, I ran the diagnostics & it claimed everthing was running fine. I have emailed support many times & all with the same content "I need to investigate this further" & "go to my info" they reset your password & still nothing. & when I unistall iTunes it doesn't completely come off, iTunes only works for me when I initially install it on a computer then by the next session i get the network connection error.

HPC - is there any change you can ring the Apple service centre in your country, (number in the link that I provided earlier) and tell them that you have turned off the firewall and that you are STILL having this problem?

I have also spoken to them and they have said, if you can't turn off your firewall, then you can't use itunes!

From what you have said, if you turn it off, you can't use it either which is the complete opposite of what they told me!

The guy I spoke to was called Rakesh - see if they change the info they give you!

I removed itunes and quicktime from my computer. I went to the apple store through the Mozilla Firefox browser instead of Internet Explorer. I reloaded itunes w/quicktime and now everything works fine. I'm sorry but I have no idea why that worked it just did. I have itunes back and that's all I care about. I did nothing else. Just removed and reloaded through a different browser.

i have a G5 at work and itunes works well! can listen to radio, searching in itunes store.

best part is, my PC (intel 4 windows XP) at home doesnt work that good.Keep on telling me that my network connection error and try again later! God...i'hv been trying for weeks and have gone thru many ways to solve it, such as:

Turned off my firewalls. No luck.
Flushed my DSN. No luck.
Tried hitting "Repair" when I click on the iTunes install icon. It spins and looks promising, but no luck.
Uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. No luck.
Rebooted and did all the same. No luck.
Tried the suggested change to the "host" file - it already said "phobos.apple.com". Tried putting it back in. No luck.
Tried all of the above in various combinations. No luck.but no luck at all.

my brother's G4 having the same problem! i wish that i can send my PC and my brother's G4 to apple in order to solve this crazy problems!

btw, thanks aysha_mc!

Cant hide the fact that I got excited when I read this with the possibility of getting iTunes store back operational. I downloaded the Mozilla Firefox browser software. Removed iTunes and Quick Time Player. Downloaded version 7 from apple hrough the Firefox browser. Reinstalled and.....no! Same problem!! Did anyone else get a result with this?

Nope, still no luck for me either!

I am moving overseas in a few months time, I have just bought a new laptop and was going to transfer my itunes librabry over to the new laptop...I am starting to think there is no point??

I don't know - Apple are not giving me any confidence in doing this, if I can't download music from them...

It's driving me mad! I don't understand how they can say "You need to turn off your firewall and it will work" when majority of users have done this and it STILL DOESN'T WORK!!

Today Tonight would have a Field Day with this one LOL (Current Affairs program in Australia)
