Connection error to iTunes Store

Can someone help me please? I have never had a problem connecting to the iTunes Store until two days ago. When I try and connect I get the following error message: "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection was reset. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."
My Network Connection is active. Nothing has changed on my computer that I am aware. So why all of a sudden can I not connect? I have been on the support pages and found nothing useful. I have tried the Network Diagnostice which just confirms at the bottom:
"Connection attempt to Apple web site was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out.
Connection attempt to iTunes Store was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out.
Secure connection attempt to iTunes Store was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out."
Help someone please??

I do not want to seem critical but it seems to me that many people are posting without reading the vast number of postings on this problem. Yes, the servers are overloaded. Yes, the error messages are all inappropriate - what sort of message suggests that you should check that you are connected to the Internet when obviously you must be in order to post on these forums. Yes, iTunes has grossly underestimated the demand for Plus upgrades. It is like a flooded river - you have to wait for it to go down.

I realize I am a late-comer to this post, in spite of the fact I've been experiencing the inability to connect to the Music Store for at least six months...but only on my desktop, not my laptop or office machine. I apologize to the purists if someone has already suggested this solution but, having read all of the suggested fixes, without resolution, I suggest the following:
This is obviously (to my non-techie mind)a machine-specific problem and, having checked every stinking solution suggested by Apple, I decided to un-install my security software and re-install it (sorry to those of you on corporate networks). Amazingly, it worked and I immediately gained access to the Music Store. I use Trend Micros security software. Good luck! G-2007

That is the problem with situations like the server overload of the last few days. In most cases it is just a matter of waiting it out. But in a few cases there will be some other cause such as yours. Obviously if you have had this trouble for six months it is a computer-specific problem, but for the vast majority of users it makes no sense to indiscriminately reconfigure the computer when it has been working up until then. Good that you can connect now.
