That's right, because there is no way to get into your locked note. So, you can read answers all day long, and you won't find the one you are looking for because Apple has stated:

If you forgot your notes password

You can unlock a note only when you enter the password that it's locked with. If you forgot your password, Apple can't help you regain access to your locked notes.

That seems pretty clear to me.

I have the same problem with locked notes, but i set them so that I could open them with Touch ID. However after upgrading to iOS 11, I don’t get offered this option when I try to open a locked note.

I resent the implication that i have somehow been stupid. I genuinely believed it wasn’t desperate if I lost the password because there would always be the Touch ID option! So why doesn’t iOS give me this option any longer?

Hi Gail!

Many thanks for your swift response.

Last summer I locked a few notes. First of all, I went into Settings and switched on the Touch ID option and created a password.

I then added a lock to three notes and locked them. I was able to access them successfully many times using Touch ID until I updated iOS to version 11. I never bothered to use the password and so forgot it. :)

Since I upgraded to iOS 11, when I try to open these locked notes the pop-up does not show the Touch ID option and touching the Home key has no effect.

On January 16, you wrote “If you forgot your notes password you can unlock a note only when you enter the password that it’s locked with.” But surely you should be able to use Touch ID if you set it up in the first place.

Thanks

Thanks, Gail.

I still have the same lock screen password I had when I set the original notes password, it’s just the latter I can’t remember.

When I go to settings I have a choice:

Reset password - I’ve tried this, but as it says the new one only applies to notes made after this reset.

Change password - this requires entry of Old password, which my experiments show is the most recent notes Password.

I think Apple have created a problem that could have been avoided - after all, I still have the same fingers and the same lock screen password. Never mind, I might guess the old notes password one day!

Anyway, many thanks for taking the time and trouble to look at this. I’m very grateful.

This is exactly that happened to me too. I also tried loading an old iCloud back up but that doesn’t work. Ever since I updated my phone, I have zero access to those locked notes and it doesn’t allow me to use my Touch ID unless it’s for a new locked note after the iOS update. I also made sure the Touch ID was clicked in the settings and everything. Also when changing the password in the settings it allows me too like the old password I put in was correct yet I’m still unable to use old or new password for the locked notes.

that really *****!!!! if we reset the password, the old notes should be reset too. like it's our notes, Why would you do that if we forgot !!!!

If a password can be reset by you, it can be reset by someone else. This is a measure for your security, which Apple takes quite seriously. It's just like if you forget the passcode to your phone, you can reset it but only by wiping the phone.

Here’s what i did. i first went to settings>notes>password reset. It’ll promt you to enter in your Apple ID password. once you change it enable your finger print option in notes. Go back to settings>notes>Password> Touch ID it’ll then ask you for your notes password. put in the password you just rest it to. Then go to the notes app and it’ll let you in with your fingerprint. I suggest unlocking it permanently.

Hey! There I found something for whom who has the same problem with notes app that you forgot your password.

What I did is—

Rest the password as in the above steps.

And when resetting the password enable Touch ID.

1. Now go to notes app and (you can’t open your password protected notes)

2. swipe note left, this will bring remove the lock icon tap that it will ask for fingerprint tap your home button and you are good to go.

3. Do this with all of your previous password protected notes. Then

4. Swipe left note now it will bring lock icon tab that and enter your new password and that’s all.

Your notes has new life again enjoy my friend.

Incidentally, I have just managed to remove the lock from the note in question via my MacBook Pro - using TouchID.

In case it helps anyone - Notes > Right-click on the locked note > Remove Lock > TouchID prompt.

It looks like this only works if the note password is in your keychain as my new test note (never opened on my MacBook) did not offer TouchID.

There could be 2 workarounds:

1) Get back to your older device momentarily; unlock all locked notes using TouchID/FaceID.

2) If you have notes setup on your MacBook with a Touch ID, use Touch ID on your Mac to unlock all your locked notes.

Next, reset your notes password to something you would remember/ write it down somewhere and then re-lock these notes.

I had the issue when I changed from Touch ID to Face ID and the locked note wouldn’t accept Face ID to unlock. I deleted the note and it asked if I wanted to use Face ID to do so. I clicked yes and deleted the note. This then reactivated Face ID for unlocking notes and I recovered the note from the deleted folder. Face ID now works on the note.
