Check the solution above. Old password protected notes reset their password to newly configured pasword automatically once you move old note to a new folder. After that you can unlock already locked lost-password-old note with a NEW password which you have just recently set globally for all notes. Password changes after the note is moved between folders.

That’s because the solution proffered is neither not “official or endorsed.”

Think about it.

Apple already provides a VERY solid security architecture; complete w/ user controls and encryption. (which DOES have a “recovery” process)

If a user decides that that the Apple-provided level of security is insufficient for his purposes; there IS the means to add YET ANOTHER LAYER via an EXTRA password …i.e. over-and-above what Apple’s “system” provides.

However, “retention and recovery” of this “extra” - outside of Apple’s ecosystem - password is now a user responsibility for obvious reasons. (i.e. if the user “trusted” Apple’s system, he would not have felt the need for the extra password)

Unfortunately, FaceID and TouchID are only aids which keep you from having to enter the Notes password quite as often; you still have to KNOW and enter and your password occasionally.

It’s not unlike your iPhone / iPad passcodes; FaceID unlocks your devices “most of the time” …

… but you STILL have to enter your passcode occasionally. (e.g. at initial “power-on” and at-least “weekly”)

I had this problem until I randomly tried something new - So if you let Apple save your password for your other accounts (the option where Apple saves it so you don’t have to enter a bunch of times), the Notes app gives you the option to use them. So I just decided to try random passwords and it worked! Once I got into my Note, I immediately unlocked it and reset the password. Who knew my Notes app password was the same as my FitBit password???

I just wanted to make a comment. I just upgraded from the iphone 8 to12. I’m sure it says somewhere that Apple got rid of the fingerprint reader home button on the iPhone 12, I didn’t know that but I do now. I wish they would have kept that functionality. They could have built it into the screen. I liked the fingerprint reader.

This makes me want to die. I have all my passwords for everything on a note I can’t reset the password to because the note itself is locked. Why wouldn’t there be something to reset the old password, instead of just making a new one. This has absolutely caused me to spiral and I will be having an anxiety attack every day for the next week. From this post there is nothing there is I can do to recover this note. You have caused me so much turmoil and pain.

We all understand your feelings.

I too have felt that knot in my stomach when FaceID failed to open a note. (although the password WAS backed-up)

Think of this as a wakeup call as to the need to tune-up your own personal disaster recovery plan.

For example: Had you lost or damaged your device, you ALSO would have lost access to your note as you were wholly dependent on FaceID (which resides ONLY on your device.)

Suggest that going-forward you consider using Apple’s keychain for your passwords. It is VERY secure, automatically backs-up to iCloud, and provides the ability to regain access via Apple’s secure restoration processes.
