See the following from Keep your notes secure with password-protection - Apple Support
If you forgot your notes password
You can unlock a note only when you enter the password that it's locked with. If you forgot your password, Apple can't help you regain access to your locked notes.
You can reset your password, but this won’t give you access to your old notes. It will, however, let you password protect any notes that you create from that point forward with the new password. This could lead to you having multiple notes with different passwords.
If you have multiple passwords, you can't tell which password you should use when you look at your notes in the Notes list. When you open a note locked by your old password but enter your current password, you'll see an alert that you entered the wrong password with a hint for your old one. If you then enter the correct old password, you get the option to update that note's password to your current one.
Reset your notes password
When you reset your Notes password, it doesn't delete or change the password of your notes that are already locked. If you have a note that uses an old password, you can update it to the new password when you enter the old password, remove the old password, then apply your new password to the note.
On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
- Go to Settings > Notes > Password.
- Tap Reset Notes Password.
- Enter your Apple ID password.
- Tap Reset Notes Password again.
- Enter your new password and password hint.
On your Mac:
- Open Notes.
- In the menu bar, click Notes > Reset Password > OK.
- Enter your Apple ID password.
- Click Reset Password.
- Enter your new password and password hint.
I had the same problem after updating my phone my Face ID wasn’t working and had my forgotten passwordto my locked notes and all the other suggestions didn’t work but what worked was moving the locked notes to another folder, then my Face ID worked and the good thing about another folder it uses a different password than the previous file so u can set a new password for the new folder you are moving them to. I hope this helps
i actually am panicking i forgot my notes pass for locked notes and the face id isn't working anymore. those notes were important and not i can't even reset it or anything please please find something to at least getting my notes back
Same , I’m litterally going crazy . I think u should try getting and old iPhone . Like the 4 or 5 since they have less security and try to backup ur phone their and see if your notes unlock. I’ll update it this works
Is there seriously still not an option to reset the password without knowing the old password?!?! I switched from touch ID to face ID and cannot remember my password for the note to save my life... this is a HUGE oversight
I found a solution to this problem. All you have to do is to unlock all your locked notes, then go to settings and reset the password, put a new one and that's all. Now you know your new password, just write it some where so you don't forget it again!
after reading all the replies from Apple I’m solely disappointed, certainly apple’s reply is you cannot access to your old notes such a shame as a freaking big company, we have important notes to retrieve bloody apple.
I just wanted to make a comment. I just upgraded from the iphone 8 to12. I’m sure it says somewhere that Apple got rid of the fingerprint reader home button on the iPhone 12, I didn’t know that but I do now. I wish they would have kept that functionality. They could have built it into the screen. I liked the fingerprint reader.
The latest update, deleted my facial recognition. I fixed that problem. Then it wouldn’t unlock notes. I just kept retrying old simple passwords, until I remembered the correct one. I will change it to my lock screen number, if it will let me. Good luck.
This makes me want to die. I have all my passwords for everything on a note I can’t reset the password to because the note itself is locked. Why wouldn’t there be something to reset the old password, instead of just making a new one. This has absolutely caused me to spiral and I will be having an anxiety attack every day for the next week. From this post there is nothing there is I can do to recover this note. You have caused me so much turmoil and pain.
We all understand your feelings.
I too have felt that knot in my stomach when FaceID failed to open a note. (although the password WAS backed-up)
Think of this as a wakeup call as to the need to tune-up your own personal disaster recovery plan.
For example: Had you lost or damaged your device, you ALSO would have lost access to your note as you were wholly dependent on FaceID (which resides ONLY on your device.)
Suggest that going-forward you consider using Apple’s keychain for your passwords. It is VERY secure, automatically backs-up to iCloud, and provides the ability to regain access via Apple’s secure restoration processes.
The trick I used , doesn’t work on latest version of iOS 11
I have this same problem, and the problem with all the answers is they still don’t provide a way to get into your locked note.
Sorry, that should read “security problem”
You are most welcome 🙂, but sorry that didn't resolve your issue....
Hope the password comes to you like magic (you know, like in the shower or you dream it 🙂)!
Cheers,
