security update 2017-003

I tried to install the 10.11.6 security update 2017-003. OS X wouldn't reboot.

I tried to install the update manually, however, the package; SecUpd2017-001ElCapitan.pkg

indicated my drive didn't meet the requirements. There is definitely, enough disk space.

Any ideas on what's wrong?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2009), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Curious. I uninstalled Avast (or thought I did).

I didn't remove it by dragging the app. to the trash can.

Anyway, I'll get it removed!

Sophos detected adware files, and other issue(s)... Which I removed.

I don't click on links in emails unless I know and trust the sender.

I use Ghostery to block trackers/beacons, etc.

I have installed this update twice. Both times it left my El Capitan Macbook Air unusable. I had to restore completely from the Time Machine backup. I'm afraid to run it again.

Maybe if you start your own thread and post an EtreCheck report there, someone might help you figure out what is wrong with your Mac.
