G4 Cube power light was flashing before it died, what does this mean?

Hello all,

I was using a stock G4 500MHz Cube up until a few weeks ago when it 'died'. It was hooked up to a 20" flat panel screen of the Cube's vintage and both were fine. I happened to be filming this Cube at the time of its death, looking at the footage today I noticed that both the power light on the Cube AND on the Apple ADC monitor were pulsing whilst the machine was running. I didn't notice this at the time.

I then shut down the Cube (Running OS9.2.2), flipped it over, disconnected the power cord, the ADC connector and the USB to the keyboard and pulled the Cube out of its casing via the handle as I'd done countless times before so I could film it from all sides. Then I slotted it back in carefully as usual (its a 17 year old machine), reconnected the three cords and hit the power button and it was totally dead.

Whether pressing the power on the Cube or the power button on the monitor, nothing happened. No acrid smell, no smoke, nothing unusual on the internals visually. Everything standard EXCEPT for this pulsing power button on both the Cube and the monitor beforehand. Is it possible to resurrect this machine because its almost perfect!

Many thanks

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), 16Gb, 256Gb SSD

There are a few links for additional information in this other ASC reply thread:

Re: Keeping my old powermac G4 cube...

Hopefully you can get your G4 Cube to function ~ or, arise from apparent coma.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Hi K Schaffer, many thanks for your advice. The PRAM battery definitely sounds like a good idea. The battery is currently dead (and is probably the original battery, too), as the machine reverts to 1904 whenever its switched on from cold.

I did find a page recently that suggested:

  1. Replace the PRAM battery.
  2. Remove the graphics card so that you can reach the CUDA button on the motherboard.
  3. Press the CUDA button once, and once only.
  4. Replace graphics card, slide the guts back into the Cube casing and restart.

And if that doesn’t fix things, then it could be the external power brick, but luckily we have a second one of those to test things out.

Thank you for the great links too. Very handy!

Hard to tell what is the cause of this issue, nor what detailed troubleshooting steps

may be helpful to troubleshoot or bring it back to life. One of the items to consider

replacement on an older Mac, is the PRAM clock battery; it can affect startup and

also system runtime considerations. ~ There may have been a power supply failure.

To reset the power management unit would be part of a troubleshooting scheme;

also a pram-reset. Given each different Mac series tended to have certain various

power management unit names and processes to re-set them, to find what your

G4 Cube has, to use it to try a PMU (or other name) power reset; and troubleshoot.

So these few items could evolve into other steps to help troubleshoot the issue.

If you have an original (copy) of Service Manual, they could be helpful given some

items that may be problematic. Back in the day, part of an official repair included

swapping known-good parts, at a certain point in the troubleshooting, as a fix...

A link to perhaps helpful extra information (a PDF) this can be saved for offline use:

[ Here's a service source to G4 Cube manual ]

Given the vintage, that opportunity to grab a known-good replacement part off a

shelf, isn't available to most casual users. Old-stock/new may also be vintage/rare.

There may be some hints among iFixit repair guide specific to this singular model;

and other items among specifications in everymac.com site. Info; and then parts?

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂
