HomeKit remote access not always working

I've had a couple HomeKit accessories for quite a while now (Phillips Hue lights, Sensi thermostat), and at first they worked pretty well. Lately, the automation's that I have set up, and remote access quits working after a couple days. I have a 4th Generation Apple TV set up as the home hub. I have made sure that:

The Apple TV is connected to the Internet and on the same Wi-Fi network as my other iOS devices during set up.

Updated with the latest version of tvOS, iOS.

I can control my accessories in the Home app on my iOS device (using WiFi).

On my Apple TV, in Settings > Accounts > iCloud, it shows HomeKit as Connected.

But when I disable WiFi on my iPhone, the HomeKit app shows my accessories (and Phillips Hue hub) as "No Response". To fix this I usually get on the Apple TV and log out, then log back into iCloud and it will start working again - for a couple days. Then the automation's quit working, and I check again for a remote connection where I get "No Response". I can always turn the accessories (lights) on and off using WiFi in my home, but remote access and automation's are gone. Any ideas?

BTW I always put the Apple TV to sleep when I'm done with it and the remote access and automation's have worked fine for months at a time without issues (and without me turning on the Apple TV).

Apple TV, tvOS 10.2.2

Hey Tommy,

Looks like you are experiencing some intermittent connection issues between your Apple TV and iPhone in regards to using the HomeKit app.

I would first verify that all your devices are running the latest software: Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Update the software on your Apple TV

If all devices are up to date, please use this link for further assistance: Automate and remotely access your HomeKit accessories

Get help with your home hub

If you have issues creating automations or controlling your HomeKit accessories when you're not home, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that your Apple TV or iPad is:
  2. Make sure that you can control your accessories in the Home app on your iOS device. Open the Home app and turn on a light or change the temperature.
  3. Make sure that your device is set up as a home hub:
    • On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Accounts > iCloud and make sure that your Apple TV shows HomeKit as Connected. If you don’t see HomeKit, then your Apple TV isn't connected as a home hub.
    • On your iPad, go to Settings > Home and make sure that Use this iPad as a Home Hub is turned on.
  4. Restart your Apple TV, iPad, and iPhone.
  5. Wait a few minutes. If you still need help, sign out of iCloud on your Apple TV, then sign back in. Go to Settings > Accounts > iCloud.

If you have an Apple TV (3rd generation)*, you can control your HomeKit accessories in the Home app while you’re away from your home. To change user permissions, create automations, or stream HomeKit-enabled cameras remotely, you need an Apple TV (4th generation). If you add an Apple TV (4th generation) to a home that has an Apple TV (3rd generation) set up, the Apple TV (3rd generation) will stop being used for HomeKit remote access.

Thanks for posting your question. Hope this helps out.

Have a great day.

This is a serious issue. I cursed out my smart plug manufacturers when in fact I should be shaking my fists at Apple. Not so sure on the verdict yet so enough of the cursing out. Please provide updates. I have similar and unique problems. I get the WiFi and remote access issue. But I also get a device unresponsive. The app throws an error “Device out of compliance”

Hue lights work perfect by the way. I guess it’s because they run through the hue hub. Looks like Philips making a better device than Apple

3 days ago I made a few tweaks and since then I have not had any connection issues with my Homekit remotely:

> on my Netgear router 2.4: I switched the channel from auto to 11

> for good measure I also gave my apple TV a static route

It takes around 6 seconds for my Iphone to connect to my homekit remotely.

I will continue to test and see if it continues to work as it is supposed to.

Folks, I had the same issue and put the DNS settings of the Apple TV to the routers address so not a public (Open)DNS server. This resolved the (slowness) issue for me (having an Apple TV 4 with the latest OS).

This is the best answer in my opinion. My Apple TV is listed many times in the Home app as being on standby, which doesn’t seem to work. When it says Connected, then everything is fine. So keeping it from falling asleep seems like a good idea. I just bought a HomePod, which doesn’t go to sleep and is also a home hub. It doesn’t go to sleep, so I hope it’s a better hub.

It us saddening to se a very specific and perfect expressed problem being totally ignored and being given a text book answer.

The problems with Homekit are real. Everybody are faced with the factory reset demand each 1-2 month. And to repeat the text book - yes the Apple TV 4K used for Homekit Hub is fully updated - yes the iCloud account has been logged out and in again - yes the Apple TV 4K is on the same network - yes the internet router has been restarted - yes the iPad PRO 9” used for controlling is fully updated - yes the other iPad PRO 12” is fully updated - yes everithing works from the inside - no nothing works from the outside anymore - yes the Apple TV 4K is saying “Connected” to the Homekit - yes I have disconnected and reconnected to the Homekit.

I guess that if I completely resets the Apple TV and all my Homekit devices it will work again - like the other times.

I just don’t feel like it anymore - think I’ll have a chat with Alexa .........

Thanks for the support. It is frustrating that there’s this glaring problem that puts Apple’s reputation on the line and it gets ignored. “It just works”, right?

I bought a HomePod hoping that would also help with HomeKit. It did do a lot until today when it also went on standby. Apple, can you make it so these hubs NEVER go on standby? Since they don’t wake very fast, putting them on standby makes them less useful in a real world situation.

I too have had this issue since dec. I went through my own troubleshooting, contacted Apple, who have had no other solutions, and still haven’t solved the issue for me, I just keep going in circles with them, and they’re in no hurry to get me a definitive solution. HomeKit worked perfectly for over a year, and they can’t seem to admit or care that the update in Dec had nothing to do with it. I’m irritated beyond belief because none of my automations work anymore and that was the sole purpose of buying HomeKit enabled devices. Probably just going to have to give Alexa a try. Apple support and use has completely fallen off the rails. It’s doesnt “just work” anymore, as users we shouldn’t have to be messing with our router band settings to make a device work. I’m absolutely disgusted that I’ve invested so much money in Apple tech.

I’ve done that a few times, but I had this issue before I even set the HomePod up and even when I tried removing the HomePod from the equation altogether, restoring and resetting the Apple TV, the issue still persisted. I’ve even gotten a new HomePod and still same situation. I’ve gotten it to work as it should with a “dummy” Apple ID I created to test the theory. It just ***** to sign out and back in when you have so many things on iCloud.

I’ve legitimately tried every solution under the sun with no luck. Logging out and back into iCloud doesn’t work for me. And yeah, with so many devices connected, that’s not a workable solution every time you want to have remote access to devices. I’ve tried this about four thousand times at this point with luck. I wish Alexa had functionality through Siri, if she did, I would be using Alexa right now. I’m over Apple not supporting their products properly.

Like others on this thread my remote HomeKit was working beautifully for about a month in December. Then something changed and has not worked since. My Apple TV 4K network is hardwired so this has nothing to do with router Wi-Fi frequencies. I read another article that said you must prevent the AppleTV from ever going to sleep. I tried this after toggling HomeKit off and on and thus far have succeeded in maintaining remote access. We’ll see how long this lasts.

Same here. My Apple TV 4K is also direct connected via Ethernet and has not once had an issue, until the day the HomePod cane out. It started showing as Apple TV Not Respondinf in the Home app. Ever since then it and my HomePod are showing as Disconnected in the Home app hub section and I have not had remote functionality for 6 weeks now with no help from Apple explaining why or providing a solution. There are other people with the same issue that I’ve been talking to on sites like Reddit. I’m tired of waiting and my patience is wearing thin. I’ve invested a lot in HomeKit and this is disappointing, to say the least.
