Mac Tech Support just had me do this, which worked like a charm: shut down the Mac. Get ready to press command, option, R, and P at once. Click the power button and immediately hold all four of those keys down together for 15 seconds (or, if earlier, until you hear the second start-up sound). Then log back in, and your email hyperlinks should work again.
Did you get this to work? It's been doing this to me for months. I'm on the latest Chrome always (currently 64) and even on a Chrome profile with no plugins, it does not work. I just get blank new browser pages that aren't even tabs in the current Chrome instance.

That "it" worked is a byproduct of relaunching the app itself, which applies any pending update to it. The problem will reappear as soon as Chrome pushes a new build via the autoupdate mechanism.
Do not reset your NVRAM. It is not an "easter egg" as some have called it upthread. It has literally nothing to do with this issue. The answer highlighted as "solved" is simply not accurate.
Thanks!
thanks Kristofke,
Quick and easy fix with the Google update.
I have the same issue. If i close all tabs (close browser) it works again, but all my open tabs will be gone(duuh).
Is there any fix for this?
I'm on 63.0.3239.84 and still experiencing this problem
Thank you - that worked for me and it was easy (always a bonus!) 🙂
how we can help to upgrade my Macbook pro
Thank you! solved it for me!
Worked for me, thanks
Thank you! I didn't think it would solve my problem but it did! Thank you!
I tried this too and it worked for about a month but it's now happening again.... Why does this keep happening?
This worked, thanks.
it worked
That works - thanks, Wendy :-)
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, your mediation effort only happens to appear to help because somewhere in the process Chrome itself is restarted. Indeed, clearing your nonvolatile RAM seems illogical because it is illogical — the contents of your nonvolatile RAM has (literally) nothing to do with the issue.
Yes, rebooting your Mac will also provide short term relief, but the issue will re-occur each and every time Chrome has a silent autoupdate pending. As a software developer, mediation efforts that provide short term relief are often called "workarounds". Given that rebooting your Mac or applying the Chrome update does not permanently solve the problem, this advice is not a solution, it is a temporary workaround. This workaround is the best possible action for the time being. Not opening external URLs is not expected behavior in Chrome's normal operation, which is why rebooting should not be considered (and is not) a solution.
I am not sure if folks are not reading my replies here, but I know many are impacted by this issue, so I think it's important that the messaging is accurate. The advice I am dispensing is canonical from Chromium's engineers. Rebooting is a temporary workaround, not a solution. The issue will return as soon as the next version of Chrome is updated in the background.
The radar for this issue is 35505509.
