After iTunes 12.7 how can I add custom ringtones?

Ringtones have been removed from iTunes with 12.7, so how can I add custom ringtones. I do not want to buy ringtones from the store, I want to manage my current custom ringtones and add new custom ringtones.

iPad 2, iOS 5

So, it looks like you can still drag ringtones onto your device listed in iTunes. This last part of the page at this link shows this process. Haven't tried it myself yet.

hi, i think i have found a solution and it works.. Apple did remove the tones, books tab from the itunes, however we can still convert the files to m4a and then to m4r. We do not need to click on mannually manage music and videos, so your content will automatically sync (except tones and books).

All you need to do is, go in the folder( any folder) which has your tones and books saved, and directly from there, drag and drop them in the itunes in your device. you dont need to first take it to itunes and then drag it. its directly the computer file that is dragged in your device. also, you can delete the file from your computer and it wont delete it on your phone since the tones and books are not auto synced.

to delete the tones from your device, go to the tones section in your device on itunes and press delete.

Hope this helps everyone.

They were my own, and 12.7 seems to have erased them as I cannot find them anywhere in my library. How can I extract them from a backup? I have backups pre 12.7 but I'd like to not restore those libraries as I have added a ton of stuff since. They were also on my phone but I had to restore my phone yesterday so I'd have to fish them out of a backup there as well.

As a recording engineer I prefer to use the ring tones I make myself. Frankly I think iTunes has become highly unpleasant. All my life I've been an Apple fan, but they're pushing me away further and further all the time. I think it started when they moved the top button on the iPhone to the side, if I could get paid for all the hours I spent talking to support over the last few years it would add up to a pretty.

Rant aside, there's got to be away. I still have my custom Bring tones on the phone. And a ring tone folder on the Mac.

I'm guessing that in keeping with Apple vinegars approach to hiding things presumably to create a "clean" interface, if not sterile.Wow as I write I just manage to do it, once my phone finish synchronizing I chose the ring tone folder in the phone and simply drag the file into join the rest of the ring tones.

i agree about declining desire for apple. my daughter (much more tech savvy) followed the procedure provided by apple, identical to that which she successfully used in 2014 to create her ringtone, and it doesn't work anymore. apple seems to be eliminating the option to create your own ringtone so that they can sell you their's. i'm sick of their greed. isn't it enough that i bought their phone?

I have tried this and it does not work for me for some reason! I have a folder on my desk top labeled ringtones, I have turned of my iCloud, I have the mange button checked and when I drag the songs to my device to the tones folder it says it is coping but nothing shows up. I have an iPhone 7 Plus, MacBook Pro and Itunes 12.7, my ringtones are mp3 files but I am told that it shouldn’t matter, help please

i tried every procedure including m4r, drag from finder, drag from desktop, and using an app. nothing works. apple just wants to make even more money off you. to quote what apple told me:

Mariana de los angeles

I just spoke with the guys from Mac and they advised that creating a ringtone from a song is not possible with iTunes anymore. They say you can try with third party apps.

I figured out the simplest process, I think.

1. Create your ringtones in Garage Band.

- Follow those steps, the instructional video is fairly handy.

- Share the ringtones to iTunes as per the sharing tab.

2. Go to the HD, open the Music folder tab, open the 'Import' folder, and see your created ringtones. They must have the .m4r extension to be recognized as a file that belongs in your phone's 'Tones' folder, which can only be accepted by your computer as a ringtone.

3. Go into iTunes, drag/drop the .m4r files into the 'Tones' tab.

4. Sync.
