After iTunes 12.7 how can I add custom ringtones?

I will try these workarounds. I have spent several hours trying different ways to make my custom ringtones work on a new SE w/ 10.3.3. Apple would like you to realize that it would benefit them tremendously if you bought some ringtones, but the ringtones available are annoying and limited.

Switching to manual management really shouldn't be necessary to control tones given that syncing of tones has been removed, but it seems to be required sometimes, presumably if syncing of tones was enabled previously. 😕

Thank you so much for this information. I kept searching and searching on how I could add my homemade ringtones to my iPhone and you gave me the answer. It worked perfectly. I really liked the older version of iTunes where you just select which tones you would like. I have seasonal ones and so I don't always need my Christmas tones on my phone. Thank you again for this resolution to my problem.

No, there is no way because Apple wants you to buy their overpriced ringtones. I spent 51 min on customer service call yesterday only to schedule a callback following day, during wich the supervisor notified me that using custom made ringtones is impossible, and that the previous rep should have known that. She also suggested that I do not have to be with Apple, since I am not happy with it. I am going to follow her advice. Yeah, it ain't just custom tones. I have tones that I purchased from the iTunes Store on my device that I cannot delete. I can't get them into iTunes to delete there, and I can't delete them directly from the device. I've even tried three different third party iPhone management software and two of them generate an error when I try to delete the ringtones, and the third appears to process the delete, but when you refresh the list, it reappears (so the delete errors in the background).

They were my own, and 12.7 seems to have erased them as I cannot find them anywhere in my library. How can I extract them from a backup? I have backups pre 12.7 but I'd like to not restore those libraries as I have added a ton of stuff since. They were also on my phone but I had to restore my phone yesterday so I'd have to fish them out of a backup there as well.

this didn't work for my iphone se 11.0.1 and itunes 12.7.1.14. when i drag the m4r song it shows up with green + circle in tones box but nothing happens. the song does show up in the iphone music folder but not in tones. i cannot drag it from music folder to tones.

i agree about declining desire for apple. my daughter (much more tech savvy) followed the procedure provided by apple, identical to that which she successfully used in 2014 to create her ringtone, and it doesn't work anymore. apple seems to be eliminating the option to create your own ringtone so that they can sell you their's. i'm sick of their greed. isn't it enough that i bought their phone?

I have tried this and it does not work for me for some reason! I have a folder on my desk top labeled ringtones, I have turned of my iCloud, I have the mange button checked and when I drag the songs to my device to the tones folder it says it is coping but nothing shows up. I have an iPhone 7 Plus, MacBook Pro and Itunes 12.7, my ringtones are mp3 files but I am told that it shouldn’t matter, help please

I am no expert but try converting the files to .m4a. There are free converters out there- I have used one by Rogue Amoeba called MakeIphoneRingtone which is drag and drop so give that a try. As far as I know it would have to be in that format to work as a ringtone.

Whats driving me crazy, is when my phone is hooked to iTunes and I look at the "tones" it shows all my custom ringtones being on my phone. Then I go to the phone and they don't show up?????? And I can't drag any more of the custom tones into iTunes is shows a circle arrow that say "LINK" no matter where we put it.

itunes is running on Admin privilege, so as normal user, you cannot drag and drop any file into itunes. This is somehow the windows security setup.

I wonder the same thing. I am following all of the steps in the video, etc to make one in Garage Band and then share with iTunes.

Steps 3 & 4 are unnecessary, however if you do make a ringtone using GarageBand on a Mac you'll find the exported file in a folder called Import inside your media folder. Previously iTunes would have automatically added this file to the Tones section of the library.
