iTunes 12.7 javascriptcore.dll crash again!!!

So I have just installed the iTunes 12.7 update on two different machines running Windows 10, and it now crashes every time I start iTunes and it tries to connect. The culprit - javascriptcore.dll AGAIN!!!! When will they ever get this right? I am dead in the water now because nothing fixes it. I have repaired, uninstalled all Apple software and reinstalled it, and NOTHING!!!! Fix this Apple, or pro-rate my Apple Music subscription until I am able to use it again!!!

Quick update. I spoke with my support advisor today and the engineers have confirmed that the problem is a network connection issue in iTunes (as suspected). I have sent them some additional information they requested, so maybe we'll get a fix soon.

Good news everyone. I still have not heard back from my Advisor, but today iTunes 12.7.1.14 showed up in Apple Software Update to coincide with the release of all the Apple updates that were released. With this update, the crash appears to have been fixed. I haven't tried much with it, but I am at least able to start up, listen to music, access Apple Music, visit the Store, etc.

The web site still has the old faulty version as of a little while ago, so you have to go through Apple Software Update to get it at the moment.

Hope this helps,

Greg

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling it may help to right-click on the setup file and use Run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If you don't mind losing the stats since you upgraded to 12.7 see Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash.

If you want to capture the more recent plays too then a script called ExportImport can be adapted to export your current stats, which you can then import into the restored older library. I'd suggest you install 12.6.3 rather than 12.6.2.

I don't know if it's the same problem, but it also happens to me when connected to my work's domain network.

I've noticed some different behaviours:

  • If I open iTunes from home when connected to my work's network via VPN, the app crashes.
  • If I open iTunes offline and, when started, I connect via VPN, I can use the app without any problem.
  • If I open iTunes offline from work but offline and, when started, I connect to the domain network, I'm not able to use the iTunes' online features (Apple Music and iTunes Store).

Anybody who knows what could be happening? I've also installed and uninstalled all Apple software many times. In my case, I use a Windows 7 PC.

I spent over an hour on the phone with the support advisor yesterday afternoon and they had me go through all the steps that tt2 has outlined and I had already done anyway, but they had to have me do it so they could continue. They had me gather several logs they could send to the engineering team. I also captured and provided them with a dump file that contains a call stack that should point them to the exact line of code that is crashing (it's in JavaScript string parsing), so HOPEFULLY they will fix this quickly. It has been sent over to their engineering team - I am supposed to get another update from my support advisor on Friday since he is out until Friday morning.

Also, thank you tt2 for keeping the link with all the installer versions up to date!

Quick question: how were you able to determine that javascriptcore.dll was the culprit? When I talked to Apple Support, they told me there was nothing they could do to actually analyze cause of the crash: it was all about "Try this workaround, try that workaround." It was very frustrating and, frankly, quite hard to believe. I expect better from Apple.

I am running Windows 7 and not 10, but face the same issue with 12.7. It now crashes many times every day. I have seen this before 12.7 also, but much less frequently. I used to have to reset Internet Explorer settings (most likely due to proxy issues), but now it seems I have nailed it down to only having to delete this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\MigrateProxy

As soon as I do that, I am able to restart iTunes

I would highly recommend that you don't start deleting registry keys dealing with internet settings just because they seem to temporarily fix the crash in iTunes. These settings affect your whole system, so unless you know for sure that they won't negatively impact anything else, they are better left alone.

This crash is an Apple-confirmed bug with network connection handling in iTunes. Until they release a fixed version, I would suggest going back to the last 12.6 version that worked until they release a fix. Hopefully I will get another update from my support adviser again since he is back in the office again today (he is out Tuesday-Thursday, so if there was an update from the engineers with the last information they requested, today should be when I would find out).

@ddukaric I have not spoken with them in a week or two. Last I heard, the support adviser didn't have any further updates from the development team and said he would email or call me as soon as he heard anything. I may try contacting them again today since it's now been a month since the initial call to them. That's more than enough time to get a fix out for something this major.

iTunes 12.7 javascriptcore.dll crash again!!!
