Can't play ringtone in iOS 11

Agreed. Most of these features remain off or I’d get about an hour of battery. It’s nonsense, all of it. I could go on all day. Consumerism addicts in debtors prison.... planned obsolesence of the middle class.

Please tell me how to make a ringtone that will work on my phone. The one I have that shows and will play on my phone but not when someone calls me I made by buying a classical piece from itunes and choosing 30 seconds. It has worked for years, but not now.

I redownloaded the purchased from iTunes using that link and it didn't work for one of our phones. The other one never had this problem to begin with. For us, it just isn't a major issue as we like to change ringtones often anyway, so we just bought something else we'd like and have moved on.

Ok. I tried it. Now, before the Apple ringtone starts, I get about 2 seconds of my old one.

I bought a Symphony from ITunes many years ago and clipped 30 seconds. I am sure I have been the only person in the world with that ringtone. I loved it. I HATE all the choices I found offered when I thought I would just buy a new tone. Can I make a new one somehow?

How can I make a new ringtone if the old one won't work any more. Of course that is what Apple wants. I wouldn't like to buy coffee that was poured out. And I didn't buy the same ringtone over again. I figure Apple will solve this, so I purchased a completely new ringtone and am very happy to have a ringtone that works. None of my remarks are abusive, unless you think the truth is wrong.

Do you care to share how you know Apple is aware? I figure if they’re aware it would be fixed by now. When this happened a couple of major updates ago it was fixed in about four weeks. Just because a bug report was filed doesn’t mean it was reproducible and given any attention at all.

Thank you for the quick response. I partially agree in looking at the whole picture this is not an “urgent” issue but is quite an annoyance. It’s an iPhone, hint on “phone” as it is a phone and phones need to alert to an incoming call. That said it’s a Phone not a portable gaming console or a workout tracker. Adding 70 Plus emoji is not a critically needed feature but you’d think Apple reinvented DNA by all the media hype they made about new emoji. Admittedly Apple lost it’s “shine” with me personally with iOS 11. Notification Center is just a disgrace and DND until recently had to be turned off on both devices as if you turned it off on the phone it would not turn off on the watch but I digress. I’m hoping this gets addressed soon as I’m not the only person annoyed by this defect. Thank you for helping out the community as if it weren’t for people like yourself there would be a lot of unanswered questions.

My iPhone 8 has been through several updates, now on iOS 11.2. My custom default ringtone has never worked. When I set it, it does place the checkmark and plays the selected ringtone, but when I get a call it plays a pre-loaded ringtone. I tried manually closing the app and restarting the phone, that did not help.

Glad that works for some of you. I have only 1 ringtone, 16 seconds long, that I’ve used for years. It still isn’t working after the iOS 11 update so I must continue to wait for Apple to fix the bug.

I don't believe Apple has ever provided the ability to select a custom or downloaded ring tone for FaceTime.

When I try to back up my phone locally (on my pc) it stops at 99% and doesn't move. It's there even when my phone isn't connected and the little spinny circle on my phone's still there. Even after resetting.

Well that's ridiculous advice sarah_s1. Sounds like you used to work for Microsoft. Do you people just spout out this answer so we'll quit bothering you? Is it so hard to read a post, admit you don't know, and forward it on? You people used to tell me to reinstall when my phone would have issues after EVERY update. Now you get caught slowing down phones and say you 'meant to do it'. Shameful.

I’m having the same issue with both my old ringtones and my new ones I purchased from Apple. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. After the battery debacle, and seeing many people have this problem, I’m wondering if there is something else going on.

Has there been a fix to the ringtone issue since this discussion in September?

I'm having the same difficulty. I've had custom ringtones for years, and the upgrade to version 10 or 11 caused them to not play any more. They are still listed in iTunes, are still on iPhone 7 as the default, and they play when I click on them. But, it defaults to the Opening tone for every caller, including the ones I have these ringtones assigned to.

I tried your solutions above with no success. Thanks for your help.
